If there's room on your team for an award-winning reporter/editor who's covered local and federal government for 10+ years, give me a shout. I'd love to continue covering the military but am open to other opportunities. There's so much to say but I'll stop here for now. (2/2)

I was laid off from

The infamous ~professional news~ update: After seven years of covering the Air Force, I'm stepping into a new role as the editor of

Hey I won an award for this story today. Invest in reporters who care about telling the human stories behind the multibillion-dollar defense budget and U.S. military policy. (Hire me)
Sometimes people ask why I want to cover the military if I'm not prior service/mil brat. It's simple: These are ordinary Americans asked to do extraordinary things as part of the world's biggest war machine, at a time when the public is increasingly disconnected from troops.
Fun fact: ICBMs launch higher into space before coming down than the International Space Station... so DOD has to deconflict with the astronauts to make sure they aren't in the way
Can you imagine your loved ones coming down from the attic with your medals, achievements and honors asking about the time you shaped the strategic environment?
How would you even begin to explain that--by being part of the shaping.
could we perhaps stop pursuing sixth-generation fighters until the Air Force FOIA site starts accepting requests through a browser other than Internet Explorer

My very professional opinion about Top Gun 2 is that the National Defense Strategy should really be focusing on buying F-14s and keeping pilots in grade 30 years longer than they should be.
This seems like a lot, for both groups:
“On average, millennials got nine hours of shut-eye each day, compared with 8.6 hours recorded by their older peers.”
I came into contact with a covid-positive person the day before he came down with a fever. I have symptoms of something but my doctor told me not to get a test because that would mean leaving my house. They're not prescribing me anything. I am talking about this.
My Q: When will everyone who needs a coronavirus test be able to get a test?
Pres Trump: “No-one is talking about this except you, which doesn’t surprise me."
My Q: What about people w/ symptoms who cannot get a test?
Trump: "Yeah, well, OK. I’m not— I'm not hearing it."
An airman I spoke to yesterday told me: "I had a white male boss call me Aunt Jemima in front of my peers. They all laughed and I was shocked. I stood there staring, unable to respond, and he slowly realized it wasn’t appropriate."

41st Electronic Combat Squadron's two-decade Compass Call deployment to Afghanistan, from the first missions after 9/11 to packing up Bagram last summer. I loved these interviews and hope you read it.
Last month, I flew with the Air Force to Guam for a week to watch Mobility Guardian, a 3,000-person exercise practicing rapid response in the Pacific. Here's what I saw.

Maj. Brandon Bailey was kicked out after a court-martial in 2010, but DOD continued paying him for seven years. So he kept the money and used a glitch to defraud multiple federal agencies, financial institutions and employers. His sentencing is Wednesday.
A C-130J loadmaster was hit in the head by shrapnel when enemy fire in Afghanistan broke the airplane window she was watching from. She received a Purple Heart last year; the aircrew earned a Distinguished Flying Cross and Air Medals this month.
Ten (10!) whole years ago today, in the era of terrible cell phone cameras, two infants went out to dinner and one of them had no idea it was a first date but managed to figure it out by the time they got married. (I love you)
Just an observation about the media:
We’ve gotten dozens of request from political reporters asking to be connected with veterans who became right-wing extremists.
But we’ve gotten zero interest in the perspective of POC troops who had to cope with extremists in their units.

Their experiences matter. How they are treated matters. What they do, at home and overseas, matters. Coverage of the daily business of the military is almost nonexistent now, erased from most local papers and much of mainstream news. It's a disservice to troops and our democracy.
Sharing this now that it's over: we wanted a nod to our profession, our local paper and our time at

It's funny how attached reporters get to our bylines. This is my last week of writing as Rachel S. Karas, who I've been since I started reporting as a little baby high schooler in 2006. I'm a little sad to change it, but I'm excited to see where Rachel S. Cohen will go, too. 😊💍
It's not just regular Texans being hit with exorbitant energy bills from the cold snap: Fort Hood's electric bill jumped to about $30 million for the month of February, about the same amount the base paid for energy in all of fiscal 2020. The Army is appealing it.
I tried to FOIA the Article 32 hearing report on TSgt David Dezwaan, the airman accused of detonating explosives that injured other Americans at a U.S. outpost in Syria. In response, the Air Force told me they don't know if I'm reportery enough to get free info in a timely manner
Good morning. This is a story about a lot of things, with a lot of new details, but at its heart, it's a story about how long you can bend a stressed force before it starts to break.
I'm proud of how it turned out and I hope you'll read it.
‘A perfect storm’: The 325th Fighter Wing at Eglin Air Force Base, Florida, may be nearing a breaking point as it approaches its third year in limbo after Hurricane Michael.
There's been a lot of chatter lately about women in defense, so I wanted to look at the Air Force's role in that conversation. The service is headed toward its fourth female secretary, while the Army and Navy are yet to have their first. I tried to make sense of what that means.
