A helpful word to ecologists? Social scientists who study conservation will never buy the selling point that a lack of ecological information is the major barrier to global forest conservation & sustainable development. Ignore policies, politics, & markets & you are going nowhere
Our new paper in
@naturesustainab
shows that croplands expanded at a faster rate w/in protected areas than outside of them from 2000-2019, especially in areas with less strict protection & w/in larger PAs & Afrotropical forests:
Non-native english speakers, don't feel bad, a reviewer just suggested my paper needs English editing (I'm a native speaker with a pretty good command of the language ;).
I'm growing increasingly frustrated w the Swiss public school system. Since my daughter started kindergarten in August I have been told >5 times that I shouldn't be working 100% because its too much for me to also take care of my kids. That I should be more available for them..
I'm excited to share perhaps one of the most important papers of my career, led by

Yes you are missing something. How do you think someone gets selected for their merit? 1st they have to be admitted, 2nd they have to stay, 3rd have a good project 4 not be abused along the way, 5 get nominated by an advisor. 1/
The situation in Gaza & Israel is tragic. As a Jew my timeline is filled w “I stand with Israel”, but what I feel more is that I stand against murder. I stand against 1200 Jews being killed by Hamas, but also against the retaliatory murder of 1000 Palestinians. Can we not agree?
7.5 years, 2 countries, & 2 kids later this beast has been finalized. No more amendments possible & it’s off for the final reviews. I’m proud of what I have done & grateful for the support from

If you haven't seen the recent opinion piece about climate activism in

Climate Action by prof Ulf Buntgen at Cambridge Geography then stop reading here. You probably don't want to read it.
He’s entitled to his opinions of course - as flawed & incoherent as they are. But
In case this needs to be said: Good data, data you really understand & trust, is far more valuable than big data. Also, it's great that people are using AI and ML for stuff, but if you aren't starting with regular intelligence & learning I don't trust your analysis.
1/It has been so wonderful watching all of my friends get tenure over the last years. I remember all of the anxious times we shared during grad school wondering if we were ever going to make through this crazy process. My heart is full & now I want to drop my own big, happy news
One of the great ironies of my career is being bullied out of enviro/ag economics at Stanford only to find myself keynoting enviro/ag econ confs & examining enviro econ PhD defenses. Happy to be involved in a kinder & less rigid wave of applied use-inspired economics!
Congrats to all the highly cited people out there. But also, congrats to all the ECRs still showing up everyday, despite no recognition, out of their love for the work.
#AcademicTwitter
Yesterday a Swiss paper featured my story about the comments women often get when they work 100% or even 60 or 80% here. The best part of this was that I received numerous wonderful emails & messages from women, men, friends & colleagues sharing their stories & encouraging me.
While we are transforming academic culture to be accommodating of remote teaching, meetings, and conferencing can we also embrace slow science? It’s simply not gong to be possible to do the things that already seemed impossible before with 2 kids at home. And I shouldn’t have to
Folks, I didn't have enough coffee today when posting a job ad. Let's start over: PhD position on sustainable sourcing policies for biodiversity protection, climate mitigation, and improved livelihoods in the West Africa cocoa sector w me and Johan Six
I have to admit, after an international move, in the context of a complicated 2-department appointment & (ongoing) tenure process, to an environment almost devoid of women w/ mostly remote interactions w/ my older male colleagues I’m feeling pretty low & worn out.

I remember what a strong impact the US women's team had on me as young female athlete in 1999 World Cup. This is awesome. Hope they keep kicking butt when my daughters are old enough to understand.
@mPinoe
is an amazing role model.
1/ Lately I have been reflecting a lot about my career. The amount resilience & self-efficacy it took to get to where I am today, but also the luck (having both good timing & a supportive spouse), plus of course the huge privilege of an amazing education my whole life.

We R not doing a great job as scientists if our 2 most prominent conservation messages right now R "Tree planting is the biggest & cheapest solution to climate change." & "All tree planting operations should be halted". This is the opposite of what we need.
Our new research published in Global Environmental Change explains why smallholders in the Brazilian Amazon use fire and how this fire use traps these farmers in poverty. Big investments in sustainable agriculture are urgently needed to reduce poverty and protect the forest.
Here a new paper on the delicate relationship between
#Amazonfires
and smallholders’ poverty.
That fire use and environmental degradation is driven by poverty has been a mantra for decades. Instead, we show that fire risk may be a poverty trap.
I am still pre-tenure, but I have decided to prioritize my work as follows:
1. Teaching & student feedback
2. Group management - esp. urgent matters (research plans)
3. Grants w/ immediate deadlines
All else is essentially non-essential. For solidarity, please like if you agree.
My 12 year old niece has 20k followers on Twitter. She posts vids opening candy & other random merch. I haven’t cracked 3k followers on Twitter. Apparently my content on feminism, supply chains, agriculture, & conservation science adds less value to the world.
"Of course a woman can have a career in Switzerland," she says. "But it doesn't help women when the media conveys the opposite." Regrettable headline but thankful for some different reporting.

-Exercise [any kind]
-Organize my storage unit
-Paint the wall where my kids drew
-Clean up the papers in my office

Some honesty for the new year... My only resolution for 2022 is to say no to almost every extraneous ask. I have been grappling with feeling quite trapped by many work tasks that bring me little joy or meaning and I hope to eliminate those over the coming years.

This also comes up in my policy analysis class to our environmental science majors. We keep getting better and better at modelling climate change, but if don't understand the importance of discount rates and select the wrong ones, then none of that matters even remotely.
I hate it when people perpetuate the myth that “planting trees” is the best way to remove carbon. It shows they don’t understand how restoration works. In many places you need to focus on preventing ongoing degradation & re-clearing, in others agroforests.
Very exciting Professorship open

Supply chain policies are an important piece of the puzzle to end tropical deforestation, but to date have barely made a dent in global rates of tropical forest loss due to low market coverage.
Research by the team of UCCRI's Rachael Garrett (
@rach_garr
) has shown that forest clearing has barely been impacted despite 'deforestation-free’ supply chain pledges.

At every single stage this department is obviously doing something gravely wrong - that in a world with 50%+ women in grad school in most global north countries they didn’t recruit, admit, support, not abuse, or notice a single woman. 2/
The dialogue playing out in the Swiss media right now about whether or not a woman can be happy or not in an academic career or prefers to marry a rich man, abt male vs female subjects is disgusting, etc. This stereotyping across a huge category of people is traumatic & coercive
As if it's not enough to be pummelled by never ending responsibilities & commitments at work. To mind the wellbeing of a large group. And now, despite my kids being super happy - it's being implied that I'm failing them.
@Momademia
followers - do you get this in other countries?
This girl skirted through 3 close covid exposures (including her little sister) without getting it and made it to her second shot. I’m in disbelief and so proud of how calmly and excitedly she sat for her vaccine! Still hoping that the Pfizer vax for <5 goes through soon…

What's the deal with all the late night academic events in Zurich? Talks starting at 5 or 6 pm?! This is not family friendly practice and biases against people with children, especially young ones. I understand for the occasional public lecture, but not for nearly every talk.
