While Vic case numbers are high, the hospitalisation rate of 3.3% of active cases, ICU rate of 0.5% and CFR of 3 per 1,000 much lower than NSW peak 4 weeks ago. Probably due to higher vax rate in Vic now especially in >50s than NSW then. A glimmer of hope that VACCINES WORK.

Who'd have thought we'd be at this point in Oz at the end of 2021? We reported 8,689 new cases today, 50% higher than the previous record of 5,725 yesterday. 12 times the 2020 peak of 721 on 30 July. Even if milder than Delta, Omicron will stress the health system if unchecked.

New cases today in Australia = 21,342, a 17% increase on yesterday. 5137 cases in Vic is a 36% increase. Test positivity rates are very high: NSW 12.6%, Vic 6.3%, Qld 6.2%, ACT 6%. Hospitalisations in NSW have almost doubled in a week and ICU admissions up 36%. Have a safe NYE.

I'm in Egypt where the 7 day average of daily Covid-19 cases is 46 compared to 42,104 in Australia ( #3 globally). I have no ready explanation for low case rate in Egypt: only 41% double vaxxed. Test rate low but adequate to detect last 4 waves. I'm stumped.

This article shows no understanding of public health and no empathy for those who suffer the consequences of Covid infection. 50 deaths a day. Many thousands with debilitating Long Covid. Increased risk of heart disease and stroke. A win for complacency.

Focus should now be on boosting COVID immunity, not avoiding infection

It no longer makes sense to try to avoid COVID infection at all costs. Vaccination will protect all but a small proportion of the community from serious illness.
