He's in a towel in that video.
It didn't register with me right away.
He's in a towel.
She thought she had a moment. A brief window. The courage it took to try. And he chased her down in a towel.
Please remember that the next time you question why a victim "stayed."
...
Hey, ummm academic lawtwitter, this is gonna get uncomfortable, but we really, really, really need to address the way that law schools elevate and embolden white supremacist students by treating their overt racism as intellectual discourse.
Doctors: "Don't Google your symptoms."
Doctors: "Never heard of anyone feeling like that ever before. Not a thing. Lose weight."
Google: "Here are 85,000 peer-reviewed studies on exactly what you're experiencing. Here's the treatment protocol."
So here’s the real story.
From the article:
Redden’s foster mother and sister both spoke to reporters after Monday’s hearing. They confirmed Redden suffers from schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, and questioned whether sending him back to prison would help him.
…
I have a pulmonary embolism. A fucking pulmonary embolism. I can't believe I cried through appointments with TWO pulmonologists trying to get them to understand that my breathing is so much worse, and only got a CT because I ASKED FOR IT, and I have a pulmonary embolism.
Bean Update:
I talked to the rescue again, and they've been unable to reach her original adopters by phone since I first reached out Saturday. They sent an email today, and if there's no response in 24 hours, as far as the rescue is concerned, she's ours.
There is no "leave;" there is only "escape."
If you or someone you know needs help planning that escape, there are resources available here. The warning that pops up is there in case your internet use is being monitored by an abuser.
Top be clear for those who are new to my particular brand of snark, what I mean is RACISTS LIKE HAWLEY AND COTTON ARE A FEATURE OF THE LEGAL EDUCATION SYSTEM, NOT A BUG.
Article also states that since he entered his plea in November, he got a job as a union laborer and an apartment.
This is one of the most deeply fucked up things to witness in our “justice” system. I’ve seen people get to a great place for months or even years while waiting…
…Redden has not been able to obtain his medication since he was released from jail in November
…Redden’s foster mother, Karen Denise Springer, said Redden appears calmer, but he didn’t receive his first dose of medication in jail until Saturday.
1. Fire the racist faculty, staff, administrators, etc.
2. Don't hire more racists to replace them. (Radical!, right?)
3. When a racist does a racism in your classroom, kick them the fuck out. (Just pretend they didn't read the case if that helps you wrap your head around it.)
5. Don't celebrate or glorify your racist alums. (Not even if they're, like, super duper rich)
6. Disown alums who do a racism. (Pro-tip: "this doesn't reflect our values as an institution" statements are NOTHING. Say, "That shit was racist.")
If your institution cannot survive without a steady stream of racist students and racist donors, then shut it down. Otherwise, own that you are perpetuating the inequities in our justice system. Make it your mission statement. Be. Honest.
The practice of law is a big damn deal. People lose their lives and their liberty and their children bc of the laws we draft and implement and enforce. You are educating people who will wield tremendous power by virtue of that education. That should weigh heavy on your shoulders.
And another thing: It IS THERE. If you are sincere about rooting it out, don't convene a panel of white people to "listen" to BIPOC students and faculty and release a statement about your "support." Instead...(Brace yourself!)
I absolutely understand how this can read as “he should be allowed to harm others bc he’s sick,” but that’s not the point of me bringing up his mental health treatment, or lack thereof:
@GsuGrinding
The rub, though, is that at that moment, he had been unmedicated for more than a month. We know how inaccessible mental health care is in the U.S. Even with money and insurance, it’s a challenge. Is he dangerous to others with continuity of care? We don’t know.
Couldn't live with that typo...
To* be clear for those who are new to my particular brand of snark, what I mean is RACISTS LIKE HAWLEY AND COTTON ARE A FEATURE OF THE LEGAL EDUCATION SYSTEM, NOT A BUG.
I borrowed $100,719 from our government, so I could become an attorney--first in my family.
I now owe $167,861.64.
Have never defaulted. Haven't borrowed more. That's $67,142.64 of interest. Set by Congress. This is what we're screaming about. Note the $20K of "unpaid interest"
I didn't become an attorney because I like to argue. I became an attorney because I like to protect.
I hate to argue, but I will do it to make life better for someone who doesn't have the power of a law license.
Stay the course, softies. We need you. ❤️
Mouth breathing is especially bad for asthmatics bc that dry, unfiltered air triggers asthma inflammatory response. And, friends, I didn't have the magic doctor words for it, but THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT I'VE BEEN DESCRIBING TO THESE FUCKING SPECIALISTS WHO'VE BEEN LIKE 🤷♂️
Anyway, bean dad and this asshole are just bullies who found themselves in the ideal power imbalance relationship for shitty people: parent-child.
There are so many people in the world who will do the right thing, even for a total stranger. May we be them; may we raise them.❤️
Y'all have been curious about Tiger's blindness (yep, completely blind). The specialist told us he'd have very little trouble adjusting bc they really don't rely on sight that heavily. Here he is navigating an unfamiliar path with some moving obstacles with ease. Incredible ❤️
A fun reminder to my international friends...
In the U.S., we're paying a FORTUNE for health insurance and still paying the doc for every little thing. Even paying for them to ignore and dismiss us.
(Apropos of me getting desperate re: breathing, ordering a nasal dilator, wearing it for a couple of hours with MAJOR asthma symptom relief, and learning that asthmatics can be overly sensitive to perceived nasal obstruction, making us switch to mouth breathing too easily.)
Yes, they are SO CUTE when they're babies. Yes, they grow SO FAST. My advice? Take loads of pictures and video. Soak it in. Stare.
But embrace the growth as safety. Little is fragile. Big is secure.
And know that they'll ALWAYS be cute. Always. 🖤 Keep growing, Elfo!
I’m a first-gen attorney. My parents couldn’t and didn’t help with law school expenses. No one I knew had any idea how extremely fucked up and predatory federal grad loans are. Everyone around me just *knew* I would pass the Bar exam easy-peasy. I did pass, but I shouldn’t have.
Years ago, forgot to grab my purse when I put the cart in the return at the grocery store. The woman who found it was nervous about handing it over to lost & found, so she brought it to me at the address on my license.
Not long after, I went to get groceries at the same spot...
My kid packed his project last night and forgot to bring it to school this morning. I saw it as we left the house and it pains me not to remind him. That bitterness as he walked to his classroom was horrible for me to watch, but necessary for him to grow up.
Imagine, if you will:
You've spent your whole life in the streets, and suddenly, you find yourself inside.
You're safe.
Or. Are. You?
