I am thrilled to share that I will be joining the Nanyang Technological University
@NTUsg
School of Materials Science and Engineering as a tenure-track assistant professor this June. The big move across the pond will begin soon. (1/n)
Happy and relieved to see that my work on fabricating 3D chiral structures with a 'twist', as a post-doc with
@kotov_group
@UMichChE
is finally out for everyone to enjoy. Lucky that the paper made it to the cover.

The undergraduate student I worked with for last two years just got his first graduate school acceptance from ChemE at University of Minnesota.
I feel like a proud parent.

My paper on understanding the role of coupled electromagnetic fields between small chiral molecules and large gold helices in Chiral Sensing 🍥 is out! Grateful for the contributions of my undergrad Alex Simon and postdoc mentor

Papers with: "may" or "can" make unicorns float on rainbows, "could" or "should" provide "how" and "when". I don't like the anxiety of not knowing "when" things will happen.

I will be presenting my post-doctoral work with

I believe this is common knowledge about the plight of post-docs. I have heard horrifying stories from brilliant fellow post-docs in all the "shiny" places, about how they went through a mental breakdown before deciding it is not worth it to stay

"It is tragic that so many early-career researchers are in such distress. And it spells trouble for knowledge, discovery and invention if so many people are concluding that they have no future in science."
Good news to begin the day with ! Congrats to my sister
@skushwaha2014
for winning this prestigious award. A recognition of her persistent hard work and creativity.
Dr. Shilpi Kushwaha, Scientist, CSIR-CSMCRI has been selected for the "CSIR Young Scientist Award" for the year 2021 in the field of Earth, Atmosphere, Ocean, and Planetary Science to recognize outstanding contribution in this area. Congratulation

Finally got to enter lab
@UMich
@UMBiointerfaces
after three months. Had left a superconcentrated solution of table salt on my bench, came back to find these beautiful cubic crystals had formed. I feel like a fresh post-doc again.

It's been 10 years on Twitter today and their algorithm reminded me of that by creating this image. Apparently it knows that I obsess over chirality, hence the left-handed 10.

mornings are perfect for making some cover art. Here we have our very own Au-S sheets sandwiched between chiral cysteine ligands forcing them to twist in a MD simulation.
My wrist looks pretty colorful today :)
For the curious who see your Indian colleagues wearing colorful bands around their right wrist - this day marks the Hindu festival of Rakshabandhan where sisters tie these bands around their brother's wrist.

Why is AIChE charging 250$ for a virtual meeting? Other conferences reduced their conference fees down to 50$ for virtual meetings

I agree ! When I got in to Minnesota, I was disappointed, but over the years and after completing PhD program I realized that it turned out to be one of the best decisions. I found advisors who became great friends and lifelong mentors.
Me - we have gold nanoparticles in this vial.
Kid - well, I don't believe you, what is your argument?
Heartening to interact with young kids about gold nanoparticles and their incorporation in curing diseases. Their enthusiasm is infectious.

I had goosebumps after reading this ... I have been so frustrated with encountering work that claims that they have solved such humongous problems, whereas they ended up misinterpreting or falsely claiming their results to suit the end goal. Thank you so so so much !!
Alex Simon's last day in
@kotov_group
today. He came 2.5 years ago as a SURF fellow for a summer, and stayed with us since then. I had the immense pleasure of working with this smart, humble and hardworking guy everyday. Looking forward to this rockstar's career in coming years.
I second Rama's sentiment.
As a postdoc during the pandemic I made a conscious effort to become a reviewer and I ended up reviewing ~10 papers in two years. I provide links to what helped me become a reviewer below - (1/n)

Kumar ATOMIC lab will set it's foundations in Singapore this June and my lab will be recruiting excellent candidates at all levels of their studies. My group has 3 PhD openings and 1 postdoc opening. Please see the attached posting and reach out to me.
Some collaborations are organic. Office next door,

and I bounce ideas, and here we have it, a wonderful combination of experiments and simulations showing the versatility of hedgehogs. 🦔 for the win.
Our adventures with complex particles continue. Unlike other micro and nano particles, ZnO hedgehog particles with rigid spikes do not clump and agglomerate in liquid CO2 mixtures, which opens the path to Zn. catalysis in liquid CO2:.
Nick's plenary lecture at
@chirality2022
spanned the fields of plasmonics to therapeutics. Tobacco mosaic virus will be scared of chirality now.

While working on my faculty applications this year, I was self-reflecting on the events in my life which have nudged me on an academic career thus far! Following two events probably had the most impact ... (1/n) @
There's a great book about this. In every walk of life, we dramatically underestimate the role of randomness in how things turn out, and overestimate the effect of intentional actions.
Congratulations to the poster prize winners of the CD2022. Two ESRs from the

Danny's last day in
@kotov_group
today. He is heading to UCLA to work with Carissa Eisler for his Master's. We worked together for two years when he joined as a SURF fellow and then stayed on for another 1.5 years to work on synthesis of chiral superstructures.
I will miss him!
Weekend breakfast and chat with Nobel Laureate and Secretary of Energy Dr. Steven Chu and

about Stat Mech, thermo, energy, batteries, and politics. One of the better Saturday mornings for sure.
Beautiful images and patterns from Islamic architecture in this thread. While they do not reference some of the Mughal architectural patterns in India, I attach some photos below of my fascination with these patterns during my last visit to India in 2017 ... (1/n)
Even better than a paper getting accepted is --- when you wake up and receive a personal email from your role model, congratulating you on your work and asking to add it to his review article.

Chirality is everywhere, from bodies to plants to optoelectronic devices. Got a glimpse of this work in Nick's talk at chirality conference. Nice to see TMV virus that affects vegetable growth feeling afraid of chiral Cu-S nanoparticles 🍥🍥🍥
Our news - Chiral NP effectively destroys virus capsids by cutting its capsid protein in half. Plants are cured after infection. In superb collaboration with Chuanlai Xu, Andrè de Moura and Petr Kral, NPs will be engineered to deal with other viruses, too
I like taking pretty electron microscope images so ended up being one of the finalists for Science as Art competition at MRS fall meeting

Is the research i do just a piece of paper, which can be stacked away in a corner or archived on the net? What is the real impact of scientific work? I do not like the idea of chasing papers, awards, titles. This just seems futile ... Maybe I am getting jaded.
