Great point by Dr Hallaq. People in modernity subordinate their intellect to passions and desires. Where in the traditional sense it’s the reverse (will is subordinated to Intellect) therefore in modernity people become slaves to their desires and passions rather than free.

This is what happens when the inner spiritual aspect of Islam is not paid attention to. Heck one can even become a great scholar yet still be thrown into hell because of pride and arrogance. Cultivation of Tasawwuf/Ihsan aka cleansing of the heart is crucial to Islam!
