So unfortunately I am off LoR at the end of March.
As much as I love the game, love making stuff for y'all, the sharpest pain is losing that fabulous team, best I've ever been on by miles.
(There should be some content that I helped drive coming out this year tho...)
I really should give my take on LoR's monetization issues, prolly wait until I am officially laid off at the end of March (not because I am worried about blowback -- especially since it's not terribly critical of Riot honestly) but it just makes more sense to me outside the org
I know I promised some thoughts about LoR's monetization, but I've got good news/bad news there.
Good news, I got re-hired by Riot for an new R&D project!
Bad, I got nothing until they can me again... sorry y'all
(as I said before, it isnt really that critical anyways)
That's the champs! -- there is a lot of action in the rest of the set, including a lot more Story landmarks
I'll drop some threads on the set in a week or 2 providing some history and context on the development
feel free to hmu with rules questions in the interval
So I'm officially off LoR now, a game I really poured my heart into. I will deeply miss engaging with this fantastic community, and miss working with the dev team even more.
I will share thoughts and vignettes when my and
@RuneclawBarich
's set drops, really excited for release!
Dreamlit Paths was made by many people who made some great stuff, but for my final post about it, I want to focus on the devs that were laid off by Riot who I know contributed to some part of the set. So much talent here and it was a joy to work with all of them.
Dreamlit Paths design thread and AMA
@RuneclawBarich
did a stellar job of summing up our work, read her posts!
I had a few small things to add, and also wanted to give you a place to ask any questions you like, e.g. balance struggles, playtest names, whatever you like
pretty easy climb with Nidalee BC -- played horribly in D1 so loitered there for a bit
prolly rock this or Neeko Shirima for a bit -- both decks have felt very fun tactically
I love reading stories about people being excited to play after watching all the brilliant games at Worlds.
But it is inspiring for the devs as well -- watching really fired me up to make some more cards for this game we love.
There is certain joy right at the start of the day when you get your desk set up just so, with a big cup of fragrant coffee, and a bunch of clear stuff to work on (currently coding some cards)
tldr: Let's Go!!!
Have seen a few questions re: Empowered. (and a lot of correct guesses!)
For clarity,
Empowered: A unit has its Empowered bonus while its Power is at least the listed number.
So while Divine Clerk had 3+ Power, it has Lifesteal
I think the feeling of being nowhere, of being between but in motion, is why i have my best creative moments on public transit
i once rode a bus loop for 5+ hours i was banging so hard on my dissertation
excited to implement this all later!
Thursday's Twin Poll:
1) What is the most underrated card in the game?
2) What is the most underrated vegetable?
(i'll give my answers in a couple of hours or so -- and yes, you probably did not need to see my name to know who wrote this...)

Sure! These are the YouTube chapter titles for the video and should give you a good idea of what questions were asked during the interview.
Grateful I love to cook, since traveling in Thailand in Vietnam over the Winter Break has completely trashed my desire to eat out in the US, which at least locally is worse on almost every vector.
@_joeysticks
I just like the competition part tbh, esp. if the other player is very good — if the game is good enough (as a competitive engine) the experience feels almost like emergent art. Good games I often don’t care who wins (poor thing for competing tho)
Winning is nice too ofc
One of my earliest experiments with Gwen was creating this:
Stitched Up (or some such name)
3c Fast Kill a unit. Next Round Start, revive it.
Card was sweet with Hallowed, but let SI protect allies, which isn't their thing
really OP too, and hard to tune w/o losing its magic
@Spideraxe30
yeah Runeterran might work as well I think
short answer:
she was super thematic for set and we wanted an Ionian champ
more thematically, we wanted to feature her interaction the Dreaming Tree, and this makes the most sense with an Ionian vibe and locale
trying not to work as i head out on vacation (Thailand! Vietnam!) but i quite literally dreamt game design stuff all night so we may be looking at design plane!
( or i might read bad fantasy novels for 18 hrs, still up in the air…)
Might depend on the game, but I honestly just think this is flat false. Players will perhaps miss more often than devs, but there isn't some magic sauce only devs have bottled.
Players are pretty good at finding problems.
But no one can offer realistic solutions to a game design problem without game dev experience and direct working knowledge of the specific game.
Devs don’t want your solutions, just constructive feedback about the problems.
She has such a better memory than me!
This was a joint product from start to finish -- I was so lucky to have such a great design partner.
(I can't wait to find out what else we did...)
He pitched to some designers a keyword that gave +1|+1, but was also something cards could spend as a resource to trigger other effects. I thought it was exciting and gave Demacia more choice when using its large stats. I was still on Fate's Voyage, but the idea was planted.
if you are ever looking for a new cooking technique, I really recommend learning to fricassee (combination of saute and braise)
it is very easy, very tasty, and since you pour off most of the fat pretty healthy
I mostly do chicken
so this dish was intended to be pumpkin/amaretti gnocci, but we didnt like the way the gnocci were coming out so we tried baking it instead (with a few changes)!
then we sauteed it in brown butter and sage — not the prettiest thing but tasted awesome
I wake up quite early, so by the time the other designers hit the office (for, you know, the actual working hours) I am lit on caffeine and proceed to carpet-bomb them with every thought I have had today
excitement on design train!
previous train being cleaned by people in hazmat suits
supposedly this is a false alarm but pretty sure the only explanation for both is
👽👽👽
erin made pepper a cake for her 1st birthday—
layers are their wet food baked with egg and a little flour
frosting is greek yogurt
there is also a kibble crumble along the bottom
both doggos were very hyped!
@MoniinoLoR
@DRocksaint
I honestly don't think so, but if y'all find like a 20%+ better build instead of like the usual 10% or so we will try to fix sooner rather than later
@Andrrerr
short term no planned PVP expansions this year but a lot of stuff coming to POC
should be canon, but many things that are happening are in the character's dreams so take "canon" with like a full lump of salt
@Rox89716855
mainly to make it clear in your card collection that it is a 2|2 and not a 1|1 with Spirit --
in hand Spirit is already applied so it is a 2|2, same on the board
the "why this way" specifically has to do with how these things were already implemented and what plays were available
@AyingottLoR
Foyer is definitely a direction we could have gone (and honestly likely will go)
but kat had been breaking kpi's in multiple decks, not just hallowed is the main reason
amazing experience at the Elephant Nature Park — elephant rescue sanctuary that frees elephants that have been abused doing logging or trick shows
got to prepare food and help feed
ooh! I like this one!
Ten games to get to know me:
- Bloodborne
- MTG
- Nethack
- Anarchy Online
- Civ IV
- No Limit Hold-em
- Psychonauts
- Slay the Spire
- Shaman King TCG (co-designed)
- LoR
(like 5 other From games could have displaced things on here tbh)
really just vile intentional behavior --
so glad our future hinges in part on these grubby sociopaths
I doubt Sam A. is going to kill us all but that is more of my lack of confidence in their abilities than his or Open AI's ethical compass
So let me get this straight. She is Black Widow and sued Disney, so you thought after she turned you down you'd mimic her voice without her and that would go how exactly?
I absolutely cannot wait for everyone to meet my new favorite character, whose script went so hard I DM’d Narrative and asked them, “So uh, y’all okay?”
@RiotDurdle
@bkopleck
@RuneclawBarich
One last callout -- the dev team that brought you Dreamlit Paths was almost entirely female! (the champs entirely so!)
It was also my favorite team I have ever worked on, and likely the best as well. Thanks again y'all!
sites trying to force me to use AI as an interface, or pre-writing messages to people, is honestly beyond tedious
like, I am not sure I want this once the tech is good, and it certainly is not that now for any use case i care about
Thank you for subscribing to LOR Facts! Today we'll be talking about Gwen!

I don't Platinum a lot of games , but I was so close with Sifu I just knocked it out yesterday
few games I have played support such joyous skill expression and as I have (slowly) improved, I just have more and more fun
