How come lovely 1960s diesels could pass along the Dawlish Sea Wall day in, day out in all weather without any issues, yet modern trains from Bombardier and Hitachi see a bit of rain and seem incapable of doing so. Maybe they are a little 'over complicated' or just poorly built?

I do love a Mk 1 compartment coach. They might be dated but to me they are so much a better travel experience than an Azuma or, god forbid, a Voyager! Maybe it’s the nostalgia and the memories.... maybe they are just nicer!!!

It’s bad enough this @AvantiWestCoast train to Birmingham has ten diesel engines to start with, yet its journey is wholly under the wires, but why 30mins before departure it’s sat under the roof at Euston engines running. Why no shore supply to avoid this polluting waste of fuel

With the ECML in chaos tonight, @LNER ’s 1533 Kings Cross-Doncaster was diverted via Spalding using @westcoastrail 47812, the first 47-hauled drag along the Joint Line for 20(?) years. Got this grab shot when it stopped for the crew to inspect something on the train.

Sad to see @DBCargoUK withdrawing its electric locos and replacing them with diesels on the grounds of cost. Surely its customers want to be (seen to be) green and should pay a bit more accordingly? More needs to be done to encourage FOCs to use electric locos where they can?

At a time when @EastMidRailway has insufficient trains to deliver a decent service to Skegness, several of its former units are stored in Ely by their ROSCOs. The logical thing would be reinstate them to strengthen trains but the DfT won’t allow it because… it costs money!

It's 34 years since the horrific rush hour head on collision at Clapham Junction which claimed 35 lives. Faulty wiring on a signal saw it show a green aspect instead of red, causing a driver to pass it in error.

I’m trying to fathom out how and why this happened. How can a professional driver set off with their tipper body not fully lowered? Why has technology not been fitted to truck cabs to warn of an imminent bridge bash? We have parking sensors for cars, it’s not rocket science!

I remember sitting in a bar in Chicago with GBRf M.D. John Smith in June 2014, and I suggested painting a 66 in BR green on one side and BR blue on the other and he was very “lukewarm” about the idea. Since then we’ve had 66779 and now this!

My trip to Huddersfield has coincided, wholly unplanned, with seeing the farewell @LNER ECML HST, with 43006/112 back in original BR colours, on its final trip from Leeds to King’s Cross, so I couldn’t resist a few snaps! This is akin to Concorde’s last flight.... sort of.

I never despair at some of the scum lurking in society. Vandals broke in and trashed several model railway layouts due to go on show at Stamford. Who does this? What goes though their minds? Have they no morals? I gather arrests have been made, but will they get tough sentences?

The message I’m getting from hauliers is they are desperate for drivers as demand by supermarket for deliveries has rocketed, so I’ve offered to do some shifts this weekend for a local company. So stop panic buying, the logistics industry is doing its best!!
