Scientist, Radiation Oncologist, pipetting for life (literally and figuratively). WashU RadOnc, Assistant Prof at UW Madison. Chromosomal instability is my jam
This is the rejection letter for the work that just won the Nobel Prize. Don’t stop believing!
I should save all of mine and maybe one day some stranger will think it’s an amazing relic and tweet it...
My friend who just got her PhD and went to biotech just sent me a photo of her on the lake. In her new boat. That she bought. Right after grad school. Here I am in academia 10 yrs after my PhD, not in a boat.
After 18 years of post-grad training, my passion for cancer research has only grown stronger and I’m happy to announce that I will be a full fledged adult physician scientist
@UW_RadoncDHO
with my own lab in July!! 🧫🧬🔬🦠❤️

(huge thx to mentors)
PhD to MD: I need a tumor biopsy 24h, 48h, and 10 days after drug tx for my study.
MD: 🙄
MD to PhD: if you’re doing single cell sequencing don’t you only need one cell?
PhD: 🙄
MD/PhDs: just tryin’ to bridge that gap
Sometimes the longer road is the best way to reach your destination...
So excited to have this K08 in hand and continue my research! Huge thank you to my mentors
@KimpleRandall
@WartlabUW
, B. Weaver, L. Leinwand, and many, many others who have helped along the way. 🔬🧫🧬

Exactly! Reviewers are people, with (hopefully unbiased) opinions that are variable. Rejections are common, but they don’t necessarily mean your work is bad or doesn’t hold promise. Exhibit A.
Oh lord. Out of 755 oncology phase 3 RCT trials, 20% changed their primary endpoint after the study started. This was associated with trial positivity (!!) and 70% of these did not disclose these changes in the manuscript. What are we doing here??? 😵
My two favorite things, CIN and
#HPV
, together in my (our) paper. Here, I found a curious phenotype in HPV+ H&N cancers and cells which led us on a chase to find the mechanism...
I would like to point out that the study that characterized the modified mRNA used in the COVID vaccine was published in a journal (in 2008) with an impact factor of 8. THIS FINDING WILL CHANGE THE WORLD. Impact factor shouldn't matter, good work should matter most.
Thank you everyone for your comments! Don’t worry, I am happy and following my passions (scientific inquiry!) and am happy for my friend too. Just pointing out the stark differences in life choices.
I just got an email saying they are considering not letting us drink coffee at our desks to create a "clean and safe environment" and my life flashed before my eyes 😖. I CANNOT
Congratulations to

In honor of Women in Science Day, I present to you a sister chromatid high five (during anaphase). I'm thankful for my sisters in science!

Who wants to come work with me in beautiful Madison, WI to continue work on how chromosomal instability affects radiation sensitivity? I'm hiring a technician! Join me for dance parties in cell culture and awesome translational science. Please apply!
It’s an amazing day! Two women earn the Nobel in Chemistry! <5% of Nobel scientific prizes have gone to women. Congratulations to Dr. Charpentier and Dr. Doudna for their work on CRISPR-Cas9 which has changed the landscape of biological research.
Time to show my work, presented in Biology-03! Chromosomal instability (mitotic errors) increases radiation sensitivity (=cancer's Achilles heel?). Biology is beautiful (look at that damage after 2 Gy (left panel) and Docetaxel (right)

I think doctors often read about Grade 2 toxicities and think “not a big deal” but patients with late Grade 2 toxicities are going through A LOT. We need to take this more seriously when evaluating trials and treatment regimens.
The stages of manuscript preparation:
1. My work is amazing! Nature paper for sure
2. Rejection. Stay positive!
3. Revise and resubmit, which takes > year
4. As excitement builds for new project, will be happy with publication in “Norwegian journal of mouse carcinogenesis.” Oy.
I have again been referred to as a “him” by default in a grant review and in a letter from authors addressing my comments for review of their paper. FYI, women can be scientists and doctors and though I appreciate your accolades I’m a “HER.” 🙄

translational science Fellow cause darn it, I want to do science to move our field forward.
They say you miss 100% of the shots you don’t take. But in academia/grant writing you miss 98% of the shots you do take. So… yeah… this is a fun game! 🤩
Today was my first day back in clinic after 2 years in lab. A medical student I had as a resident, who is now a resident herself, is now teaching me how to use Epic. The medical training circle of life! Thank you
@emily_merfeld
!
Dr. Moser, the first, and only woman scientist in my dept, is retiring today. Coincidentally I, the second (and now only) woman am starting on the same day. I finally had the chance to meet her and she handed me the metaphorical baton and it was lovely 👩🔬

@HenningWillers
It’s crazy!! I think it’s because we’ve all experienced it! We unite over creating a body of work you care about so deeply, have worked so hard on, and truly believe in... only to have it rejected. But good science speaks for itself! Keep going 😊
On the day before my 40th birthday, this seems appropriate... I’m STILL in training. But doing what I love! Sad to see only 26% of
#radonc
MDPhDs having >50% research effort. I’m thankful for my physician scientist family- keep up the good fight!
You have no idea how happy it makes me that this badge flag exists! Biological research is how we move forward. Thank you

Female scientist: 6 yrs post-doc, 8 first author pubs, "I am not good enough to get a job."
Younger male scientist: 1 yr post-doc, 0 recent pubs, "I am so ready to start by own lab."
The confidence gene is not on the Y chromosome. Women, believe in yourselves!
YES! great work differentiating between HPV+ H&N cancers. HPV 33+ does worse, has decreased immune infiltration, and genomic changes similar to HPV- cancers. Is this a way to decide who we can and cannot de-escalate?
#ASTRO21
I still won’t believe it. As said in many posts, Cullen was the best of us- the most caring and supportive mentor, brilliant innovative scientist, and most importantly, a kind person. We all will miss you terribly and will try to be as good of a person as you were.
I am shocked at the sudden passing of
@TaniguchiMD
. Cullen was a brilliant doctor and scientist, dedicated teacher, and generous friend. He was the best of us. This is an immeasurable loss to
#radonc
. This was Cullen and I in Zambia teaching

to oncology trainees. 😭
Good mentors are priceless. So incredibly lucky to have the best
@KimpleRandall
(and Beth Weaver). Thank you
@RSNA
for highlighting someone who puts his mentees' needs before his own (a rarity!). A true gem.
@UWCarbone
I'm reviewing
@ASTRO
abstracts and have 2 conclusions:
1. Many don't know how to write a good abstract (maybe
@ASTRO
should provide a formal lesson on this-it's an essential skill)
2. There is some really cool work going on!
Can't wait for
#ASTRO22
Everyone who knows me knows that I'm unabashedly nerdy, pipette like its going out of style, swoon over a perfect Western blot, and love science more than anything! I am so excited to hear about the exciting

. Seeing all of you and knowing how hard you work to improve patient care makes me so happy. It’s a blessing to work with so many incredible people.
The amount of positivity and persistence one must have to continue to do research in academia is like combining the excitement of a golden retriever puppy with the persistence of Thomas Edison and keeping that up. Forever.
Radiation Oncology-Biology Integration Network (ROBIN) is a fantastic new NIH funding mechanism that recognizes the (giant) knowledge gap in Rad Onc regarding biological determinants of treatment response. Great idea
@NIH

twitter, SOAP and job market concerns: First, for those of you who think we’re crazy for taking 4-5 yrs to get a PhD well...
#winning
. Second, follow your passions. That’s what matters. If you love what you do, you’ll be good at it and get hired.
Just returned from an international trip and got an Uber near the university and was asked “are you back for school?” That makes this nearly 40 year old very happy. But the funny thing is... I’m kind of still in school. Fellowship = 32nd grade 🤪
Now our hospital is no longer allowing visitors due to a large spike in COVID cases (from UW undergrads). Was that party worth it? Remember, seemingly small actions have large consequences. Being alone while sick shouldn’t be one of them.
Last day of fellowship/postdoc (17 years of training 😳) and I’m turning in my pipette... but only for 5 min because... there’s always more western blots!
I always have mixed feelings when giving undergrads advice about doing MD/PhD...its a looong road and really only the best (and lucky) end up doing both (I can think of only ~2/18 or so alumni from my program that have a lab). But as
@KimpleRandall
says, its a cool job!
So happy for my boyfriend who has a paper out in Science today!! And yes, a picture of those tapeworms were on his dating profile (nerd alert) and I was like “yes please.”
Evolutionary gain and loss of a pathological immune response to parasitism
My excellent mentor
@KimpleRandall
just devoted an entire lab meeting to discuss implicit bias and how we can all do better. This should be on the agenda for EVERY lab.
FDA approved
@Merck
HPV 9-valent vaccine expanded indication for HPV-related head and neck cancers. YES! I will keep doing research on this, but please get vaccinated to put me out of business in 20 years.
I just learned that a new graduate student in my lab graduated high school in 2017 and I just.... cannot... then my other labmates told me they were like 5 when I graduated high school. Awesome. I'm a lab dinosaur. Double doc life...
Today my baby arrived. I am calling her Jane Fonda because the real Jane never seems to age, keeps working gracefully in her 80s (while beating lymphoma!!), and fights for what she believes in. Here’s hoping this Jane will last till I’m 80!
@Janefonda
HUGE congratulations to one of the best physician-scientists in
#radonc
that I know,
@DanWahlMD
for getting a 2nd percentile (WHAT???) on his first R01 (WHAT??) that was reviewed by RTB (WHAT??). It can happen! Can't think of anyone more deserving. 🥂 Our field is in good hands!
I just got 2 emails from the UW system:
1. asking "older" women >40 to start an exercise program
2. asking for study participants 40-75 for an aging study
Since when is 40 "old"? I'm still a damn Fellow!!
Great study with bad news. ~60% of parents have no intention to vaccinate their kids against
#HPV
even with Dr. recommendation. The

PREVENTS CANCER. Jackpot! Apparently I need to show parents the morbidity of H&N and cervical cancer treatment.
Currently reviewing grants and I have noticed that many male PIs insert tons of BOLDED statements into their biosketch, whereas I have not seen this in a single biosketch from a female PI... maybe we need to scream how cool we are too?
Pt reported outcomes after hypofx IMRT v. Proton therapy for prostate cancer: trend to worse toxicity (at certain time pts) with protons (but not technically significant…).

After the rough week RadOnc (and Onc!) has had (trials 🥴) I saw this in my lab fridge. It’s my undergraduate student’s slide box and my heart melted. Thank goodness for the joy of discovery to keep us going!
So lucky to be a Forbeck scholar at the Aneuploidy Forum with the best scientists in the field (in Italy!). Science + amazing food + incredible people = Pippa heaven
In general, more patients experience toxicity from immunotherapy than benefit from it ... wouldn't it be GREAT if we could predict who will experience toxicity and spare them from it? This story is a beautiful start. 🤩
@aadel_chaudhuri
@AaronNewmanLab
The bipolar nature of grant writing. Each cycle lasts ~24 hours:
1. Holy crap this grant is amazing! I’m going to cure cancer!! Pure happiness.
2. This is quite possibly the worst grant ever written. I’m going to have to work at Starbucks.
... and repeat
OMG. Proof that stress from medical training shortens telomeres 6x faster than an avg person! My lab mate just thanked me for my sacrifice... y'all.... I want my base pairs back
I swear, one day I will be elegantly grant writing in beautiful clothes with my hair and nails done instead of in sweatpants covered in cookie crumbs and coffee stains...
#lifegoals
Nerd destination: Standing at the place where Watson and Crick announced the discovery of DNA. Thankfully, there is a plaque dedicated to Rosalind Franklin below. I hope the convos I had with my HPV colleagues here will lead to exciting discoveries as well!
I've given a lot of talks recently and this is the reality of what we (as scientists) present. Don't be discouraged when things don't work. We all have giant underwater icebergs which actually make the top part better!
Apparently it takes more than a PhD, MD, and a residency in a very technical field to figure out how the hell to record and upload a virtual talk for
@ASTRO_org
.
When I am not in lab I see patients at a small satellite in WI. We enrolled a patient on MA.39, had a question, and Tim Whelan himself (🙌) emailed back within 10 min. My mind is blown! Now THAT is a dedicated PI. He is gracious too 😌
I need irradiated mouse feed and don't want to wait 4 weeks to get it and thought, I'm a RadOnc, can't I irradiate it myself? And then I realized 25,000 Gy is required for sterilization so.... that's a no.
