Did you know that Title IX gender equity rules also apply to publicity?

and I looked at how schools were using one measure of social media, and found that even as women’s sports grow, most schools still promote men’s teams more.
Before Jerry Sandusky, there was Todd Hodne. Before the serial sexual predator who ended Paterno's career, there was the serial predator who left his career untouched. Here are finally the voices of the women who want this story told

Heart issue linked to COVID-19 fuels Power 5 concern; medical sources say at least five Big Ten athletes and other athletes in the Power 5 have been found to have post-COVID heart issues.
The story says Alabama’s sports information director told reporters to ask only questions about the game. As I told a group of college journalists last week, ask any question you want. You don’t work for the SID. Your job is to get answers for the public.

After the Jerry Sandusky abuse went public, in an interview with the Washington Post, Joe Paterno makes the comment, “I had never had to deal with something like that. And I didn’t feel adequate.” He did have to deal with something like that, and his name was Todd Hodne. 1/8

is “Betsy & Irv.” It should reaffirm a belief in humanity. It's a bright light in an otherwise dark narrative of rape and murder. Because this story isn’t about an evil man. It’s about, as one survivor says, a “guardian angel.”1/5
Cardiologist Dr. Matthew Martinez said he has received calls from physicians from at least a dozen Power 5 schools who have identified more than a dozen athletes with some post-COVID-19 myocardial injury. He said about half of them had symptoms. 1/2

On Sept. 11, 2001, 33 passengers and seven crew members gave their lives preventing a group of terrorists from crashing United Airlines Flight 93 into its most likely target: the U.S. Capitol Building. It saddens me to think about the friends/loved ones of those 40 people today.
Todd Hodne was perhaps the most dangerous predator ever to play college football. An ex-prosecutor wrote: "Hodne, to this day, remains among the three most dangerous, physically imposing, and ruthless excuses for a human being I have ever faced in court."

These new Title IX sexual violence guidelines for schools appear to maintain coaches as mandatory reporters in elementary and high schools (considering legal obligations to minors). But they give colleges discretion as to whether or not coaches should be mandatory reporters.
Within the story of a man who did such harm and wrong to women is the story of another man – actually a teammate – who did something so right and honorable and brave that it should be the model of how athletes (hell, men in general) can stand up for women.
A woman says she was sexually assaulted by MSU basketball player Brock Washington in January. Michigan State University police say there is proof. Local prosecutors say there isn’t enough. Last week, the Michigan Attorney General was asked to intervene.
We've been asked quite a bit over the past few days to speak about Ken Starr's time at Baylor and his role in the sexual assault scandal and investigation that led to his ouster as president. We covered much of Starr's time at Baylor in "Violated." 1/2
NCAA Chief Medical Officer Dr. Brian Hainline says on morning press call that 1 to 2 percent of athletes at NCAA institutions have tested positive for COVID-19; at least a dozen have been later found to have the heart condition myocarditis.
One aspect of the NCAA's 2016 medical care rules was to limit the role coaches have in hiring, firing and supervising sports medicine staff, including athletic trainers. But it's apparent that some schools still haven't got the message.

But this one quote kind of sums it up: "...it was his lack of knowledge - and the many fingers pointing to his lack of involvement in the day-to-day business of the university - that led to the conclusion for some that while he didn't know, as president he should have." 2/2
It might be different abuse, different times. But the same system that enables one predator, enables others. The same system that denies transparency and accountability to reports of sexual violence silences not just one victim, but many. It creates a pattern and a practice. 7/8
Eight coaches already out, many on the hot seat. What's the cost? Over 11 yrs, public FBS schools paid more than $533 mill in "dead money" buyouts to fired bb/fb coaches. We broke it down by school/conference/coach. Auburn, Nebraska & Texas top the list
Jurors this afternoon found Baylor University negligent and in violation of Title IX in federal lawsuit involving a former female student who alleged having been physically assaulted by a football player in 2014. She was awarded $270,000 for the negligence claim.

Lincoln, Neb., does not exist without college football. The lost revenue from no downtown parking meter fines on fall Saturdays alone will be enough to send the city into bankruptcy.

During our reporting on this story, I always had the question on my list. But I rarely had to ask it. When I interviewed victims of ex-Penn State football player Todd Hodne, and female students or leaders from the ‘70s & '80s, they brought it up before I had a chance. 2/8

A federal judge in Waco dismissed the negligence claims against ex-Baylor coach Art Briles, ex-AD Ian McCaw and Baylor; the Title IX claim against the school will be the only matter sent to the jury in the case of a woman who reported a football player physically assaulted her.
Any journalist who has ever filed an open records request for copies of text messages or emails to/from a head coach, and gets back either nothing or scant meaningless messages knows this tactic well.

In response to Michigan State’s statement Wednesday refuting the allegations of a current female student who is suing the school under Title IX, the student’s attorneys just released this statement:
With chatter about Art Briles being considered for a job at Southern Miss., it’s worth remembering that the Briles/Baylor story is long and complex. And concerns about how Briles ran the program went beyond any one particular action and beyond issues of sexual assault/violence.
“This is what was happening then. This was common knowledge among us that things were covered up or ignored,” said one women’s right activist on campus at the time. 4/8
