It's official! I'll be working with LiveWire on the education beat for the next 8 months. If you have any tips on unique education initiatives in your community or issues about the CCSD/CBE, please give me a shout!
We're soooo excited to share that Paula Tran (
@paulatr12
) is the new LWC Education Reporter (primary to post-secondary)!
It's a big step in our growth and in serving a very important area that impacts hundreds of thousands of Calgarians.
Welcome, Paula!

Fun fact: In Vietnam, we celebrate the Year of the Cat, instead of the Year of the Rabbit. Not exactly sure why, but some say it's because of a language mixup in ancient times. Happy Year of the Cat everyone!

I'm a journalist of colour who struggles to find my place in this industry. The former CBC journo's piece really, really hurt me. It is so disrespectful to my colleagues who have been doing this work for years, and to the readers who want more diversity in Canadin media.
Premier Jason Kenney just compared public opinions towards unvaccinated people to how people treated those with HIV and AIDs in 1980s. Kenney fought to prevent partners of AIDS/HIV victims from hospital visits when he was federal citizenship minister.

I asked Calgary police today if they are aware of alleged white supremacist groups participating in the Beltline protests. Chief Mark Neufeld says CPS is aware that some participants have connections to white supremacist groups.

UPDATE: Alberta’s proposed involuntary treatment law violates Charter rights and disproportionately harms Indigenous peoples, an expert says.

Marginalized voices have been largely ignored in Canadian media for too long. Amplifying these voices is doing the bare minimum, and there is still a lot of work to be done to repair the damage journalism has done to these communities.
I am a CBC reporter covering “Freedom Convoy” & adjacent protests since it started, haven’t stopped.
I’ve made inroads with protesters, organizers — some speak to me regularly(!).
How? Lessons learned:
I try to be kind & curious in understanding why protests continue.
This somehow needs to be said, but racism in Kelowna is nothing new. I've lived here for years, and I experience anti-Asian racism regularly. THREAD (1/5)
After more than 2 years at Corus, I was one of many journalists who were laid off yesterday.
My heart breaks for my colleagues who were laid off, and for those who now have to "do more with less".
For those of you who have followed my stories, thank you. That means a lot.
I'm begging people to have empathy for those living under lockdown in Shanghai instead of using it to prove some moral superiority over COVID-19 measures in your country.
On the bus in Kelowna tonight, a man mocked a group of Brown women as they were leaving. He then turns to look at me and used the same mocking tone to talk to me. I’m tired. Just so incredibly tired.
Journalists were criticizing your story, journalists who have covered this issue for years and spent years building trust with drug users and DTES residents. Your story was harmful not just to drug users but to the journalism industry as a whole.
Is it better to criminalise addicts, rather than help them get straight? No
Might it often be necessary to do both? Yes
Does this rule out pursuing a “public health” approach to drug addiction? Absolutely not.
Can safe supplies provided free save lives? Yes.
Might they also kill?
I also asked what efforts are being made to mitigate this considering the potential harm on Black, Indigenous and racialized residents in the area. Neufeld said CPS has been paying attention and anyone will be arrested if they committed an offence.

I don't know why this needs to be said but photographing people passed out - overdose or otherwise - is super shady and awful practice, even if it's happening in a public space.
And again, the City of Calgary did not vote to allow non-citizens to vote. Councillors voted to ask Alberta Municipalities to explore possibly allowing permanent residents to vote. Smith's tweet is misleading.

In rare circumstances, the province does need to take a second look at certain city decisions that are unconstitutional or fall outside their responsibility.
One example is the City of Calgary attempting to alter election laws to allow non-citizens to vote. That is simply not
And yes, the work needs to be done even if you are uncomfortable. It is not the job of BIPOC people to dismantle the barriers for you. We can't scrub our skin colour off at the end of the day, while you get to disengage from the work when you want to. (4/5)
I need men in media, especially white men in media, to sit down and learn to listen to BIPOC women in the industry. Please do not invalidate our experiences with online hate and insert yourself in the story when it's not your place to do so.
This article is bonkers. BIPOC journalists are asking for more diverse stories and newsrooms. We're asking for our voices to be considered in management. Our communities deserve to be represented not just when a crisis happens. I'm glad younger journos are pushing for this.

This is a systemic and institutional problem. Words and gestures against racism are great, but being anti-racist means actively dismantling the systemic and institutional barriers that have barred racialized folks from contributing equally to society. (3/5)
New from me: Alberta's EMS union says the system is on the verge of collapse.

Some personal news:
As some of you may know, I am no longer working for
@KelownaCapNews
. I'm excited to announce that I will be joining the
@770CHQR
team as a digital coordinator and reporter in January!
I'm not surprised that this is happening. I'm sad and angry, but not shocked. I'm just exhausted. Racism against BIPOC folks, especially against South Asian and Black people, is a common occurrence here. (5/5)
As a journalist of colour and a woman of colour, I already have a hard time getting recognition for my work.
@NewspapersWest
is not willing to do the bare minimum to make sure that is done, and it's very telling. I'm tired.
.
@RSJnow
is committed to equity, diversity and inclusion within every facet of university life. We want to make it clear that we do not support racism, homophobia and transphobia in any form. (1/6)
@EVYSTADIUM
Honestly, David Chang always rubbed me as someone who thinks of himself in a high and mighty way because his restaurant is popular. He thinks he's the authority of Asian foods. So this doesn't surprise me.
I've had several people call me a nazi, say "Asian people are racist too," or accuse me of spreading hate because I asked the police about alleged white supremacist involvement in the Beltline protests. This also happens every time I write about racism or hate crimes in Calgary.
At UBCO, I was called a ch*nk. Around Kelowna, I was "complimented" on my English, had my Canadian citizenship questioned, and asked where I was "really from." I've also heard derogatory comments made towards immigrants, especially those from South Asia. (2/5)
As a queer POC student at
@RSJnow
, it really hurts when someone says that my existence "sinful." Sending love and support to anyone who might feel the same. My DMs are open to anyone who wants to chat.
Morning. Today I received a threat because I wrote about how ivermectin is not an approved way to prevent COVID-19. This is not okay, and I'm so tired.
Please send pics of your furry friends to get through the week.

@antihateca
is raising concerns after homophobic and transphobic threats targeted organizers of LGBTQ2S+ events across Canada. The organization says it is seeing an importation of groomer narratives and other disinfo from the U.S.
#Pride2022
The onslaught that I got after retweeting a piece by
@XtraMagazine
makes it clear that we need more LGBTQ2S voices not just in
#cdnmedia
but media around the world. Trans voices and stories, especially from Black trans women, are sorely lacking in legacy media.
The
@liberal_party
of Canada governs with 160 Members of Parliament:
10 are Chinese;
15 are Sikh
12 are Muslim
4 more are from India not Sikh
6 Jews
1 Argentine
That’s 48 MPs with questionable loyalty to Canada in the Liberal government.
So
@NewspapersWest
posted the finalists for the 2022 Ma Murrays on Monday. While I am happy for the folks who've been nominated, they still haven't credited me for a story I worked on

I have been told they are not correcting the nomination paper.🧵

Yesterday was a stressful day in the newsroom. I still have a job, but dozens of coworkers across the country lost theirs. Thinking about them today. This industry is heartbreaking.
Hey I know that videos of Christina Yuna Lee’s last moments are making rounds on Twitter, but I really really need y’all to think about how traumatizing it is for Asian women on this app to see it on their feeds over and over again. Some of us are still mourning.
This is sickening. By all means, critique our reporting, but threatening us is not okay.
Unfortunately, BIPOC and women journalists are often at the receiving end of these sentiments. People still email me about an ivermectin article I wrote in August. Stop it. Leave us alone.
This fellow called for me to be tried and executed along with other journalists. But, on the more positive side, he said “you’re the SOS guy!” and added that our team had “a lot of guts” to cover the Toronto protest.
It’s what we do.
#journalism
I spent a good while gathering my thoughts on this. There was a shooting in Atlanta where 6/8 victims were Asians. Y’all. I’m scared. I’m truly truly terrified. Words cannot describe how terrified I am.

The CTV layoffs are heartbreaking. So many good journalists are losing their jobs. My thoughts are out to my colleagues. This industry is depressing sometimes.

This morning in Tel Aviv, someone smashed the front door of Haaretz offices. In Jerusalem, journalist Nir Hasson was attacked by a group of young religious right-wingers.
Journalism, like other institutions labeled "leftist," are under attack. Truth is the last line of defense
I don't know what's next for me. All I know is I don't want to leave journalism, whatever that may look like. I'll miss my former coworkers dearly.
For now, I'm going to take some time for myself and figure out the next steps as I go.

not sure who needs to hear this but why is it always expected for ethnic food places to be "cheap" like they aren't facing the same inflationary pressures as other restaurants?

The CAJ is overjoyed to announce the successful applicants our inaugural mentorship program.

The online reaction to folks being stuck at the top of the Banff Gondola is super weird because 1. people with disabilities exist and 2. a lot of people do not know how to climb/scale down a mountain at night.
Every day I'm reminded that Calgary's public transit infrastructure is terrible and car dependency is making things a lot less accessible in the city. How can the third-largest city in Canada not have reliable public transit? Not everyone can drive.

Of Americans now claiming "bi" identity, the vast majority of them in long-term relationships are in opposite-sex relationships (33%) rather than same-sex ones (3.7%).
So 10 times more people who identify as "bi" live in hetero-appearing relationships than gay/lesbian ones:
And once again we see BIPOC journos be brushed aside despite saying the substack piece has harmed us for days now. This is disappointing, to say the least.
There is a reason why vulnerable populations are hesitant to talk to journalists. You're not helping matters. Maybe spend time actually trying to understand the very complicated issue and write a story about it.
My name is clearly in the first byline, which they could have easily verified. This is also an easy correction and frankly not a huge ask. I've been told they will give me verbal credit at the awards ceremony. That's not good enough.
