Today 18 of the 19 Hackney students I helped support over the last 2 years have gained their place in medical school - most from low income families with no connection to medicine and nobody who went to university. They’re amazing!
Photo of mock interview session last year.
In 1988 TH Lesbian & Gay Group breached Section 28 by donating gay books to Tower Hamlets libraries. Anne Cunningham (2nd from left) relished this, saying she wanted to be the first librarian prosecuted. No action was taken.

Last night went out to the Barbican with friends Fatma and Tulin to see the amazing

and I were in the Old Compton Cafe when I heard a bomb go off. I recognised the sound from the Brick Lane bomb a week earlier. I said to Helgi “You’ll be needed” and we moved down the street. Hard to forget the scenes we saw seconds after.

Tower Hamlets saw the formation of the UK’s most successful LGBT group - Stonewall - in 1989. At meetings in Ian McKellan’s home in Limehouse a group formed with six Tower Hamlets residents on it -

A year ago - before the latest plague - I did a talk on part of my LGBTQ+ history of Tower Hamlets - the fight against Section 28. To mark LGBT History Month I’ll try to post something every day in February.

After more than 35 years in this country it felt very odd to have to apply for permission to stay, and even now I feel uncomfortable about being labelled as “settled”.
I am relieved though that I don’t have to pack my bags if we leave the EU.
In the early hours of 20th Dec 1983 - 40 years ago today - I was woken up by the phone ringing. When I answered there were just three words. “Post Office Tower”.
Within four hours I was arrested with others and thrown into Leman Street Police station cells for 9 hours.

It’ll be previous management... but good to see the trend reversing everywhere. It only saves money at the cost of a much poorer service... which will cost money in the long run anyhow.
We’re so proud of the students that are heading to medical school this year, in one of the toughest years for such applications! Thanks to all the doctors and medical students that help us and

I was on free school meals for the entirety of my schooling - from 4-19. One thing I never understood was how they recognised my mother was to able to fund lunches during school term but then, miraculously, was able to do so during holidays.

Lockdown haircut day today &
@traumagasdoc
was refusing to do what I wanted as he prefers a ‘Huw Edwards” look. Fortunately a slip of the clippers, a quiet “oh fuck” & too many “it’s fine”s for it to be believable later, I got what I wanted. He can do this again!

In 1971 100s of Gay Liberation Fronters held a ‘Gay Day’ in Victoria Park. 24 yrs later I helped steer TH Council to host Pride 1995 there - the largest UK Pride then - dwarfing the local population. I still have my VIP pass on my desk.

We continue to support students if they need/want even after they leave, with retakes, re-applications etc right up to their 25th birthday.
This is the Icelandic brother in law - just beating his own world record and lifting 409kg ... as you do.
His brother,

As Section 28 slipped into law, opponents sent Tower Hamlets councillors 1000s of pink postcards asking them to effectively break the law. This led to the council funding the local LGBT group and undertaking to support the community.

In 2007, 20 yrs after my cheap LGBT exhibition, I got the chance to do a properly funded one at the Museum of Docklands. It was up for a month and then toured the borough’s libraries. Many of the stories I posted this month are from it.

Polari was the language of a secret gay world. A mix of slang from many sources it was in common usage until the 1970s reaching a peak after R4’s Round the Horne programme (9m listeners) with Julian and Sandy (Kenneth Williams & Hugh Paddick)

Finally a plug for the excellent Eldheimar museum on Heimaey that tells the story in deep and personal detail - it is built over a destroyed home with all the personal items visible. If you get to the Westman Islands (Vestmannaeyjar) do visit.

The 70s were a period of radical gay activity, & availability of low quality empty homes meant that on 2 occasions we had gay centres in TH - the East London Gay Centre and Bethnal Rouge - providing support, shelter and a focus for activity.
