In one word: Russian tanks loss in Ukraine is terrible. It is neither sustainable nor compensatable. There will soon be a shortage of modern tanks among the Russian ranks, and it will definately hinder further Russian (offensive) operations. (20/end)

A T-80U thread. Russia inherited 600~700 T-80Us from the Soviet Army in 1991. According to SIPRI some 125 were exported to Cyprus and South Korea (among which 74 were exported before 2000). No recorded battle losses before Feb 2022.

These cut the total deployed RU tanks to 2080*2/3=1400. So the Russian Ground Forces have visually (always note it is the baseline figure!) lost 467/1400=33.35% tanks deployed in Ukraine in the first 46 days of battle. This is definately not a scratch, but a terrible loss. (9/n)

So what if Russia would compensate the damage from its huge tank reserve? It can somehow work, but not for long. Firstly, let's forget about Russian tank industry. Industry provides some 200 tanks/yr to the RuAF, while they are losing 300 of their tanks/month.(10/n)

The rest of the "10,000 tanks army" lies in the "Central Armored Tank Storage Bases", where vintage tanks are mothballed in huge amounts. These tanks, like this T-62AM from the 1295th CATSB, basically have no chance of survival in modern warfare. (16/n)

Generally Russian artillery storage has shrinked by more than 50% since the beginning of the SMO. It is also worth noting that many remaining SPGs are already have their barrels removed. And thanks again @CovertCabal .

I will keep an eye on such news in the coming future. Transfering troops from faraway theaters is an indication that the Russian army lossing its balance in defense. Such thing once happened in August 2022 and we've seen what happened later.

According to @defence_centre daily brief, the 11th & 83rd Air Assault Brigades have been redeployed from Kherson to Bakhmut. The 68th Tank Regiment of 150th Motor Rifle Division reportedly recently moved there too, as well as PMC Patriot, & Gazprom's Fakel.

Russian Federation also exported some 500 T-72s (excluding those newly-built for India) from 1991-2021. That gives the number left as 3440. I think this may be close to the actual number of T-72s that Russian has got before the war. Among them some 1961 were in active service.10/

there were Japanese volunteers within the Ukrainian army, and they want to fight them since they hated Japanese. (I know usually only the hardcore Han nationalist would join the MNDAA but, seriously?) How clusterfuck this war is.

And here are the results: figures fall in good. And this indicate the total Russian tank fleet as of late Nov 2022 at 2079. Always remember there can be a ±20% margin (1663-2494), and I will recommend a -20%, since Ru is always fucked up harder than I can ever anticipate.

@visegrad24 Man, this photo was actually taken at Malyshev Factory, Kharkov Oblast, Ukraine. These GSFG T-80BVs were left rusted for years before Ukraine managed to salvage some after 2014. Some of them are now serving in the Ukrainian Air Assault Forces.

Remember this is an rough result basing on merely one type of equipment and many assumptions. A more accurate approach is to count every type of tank losses geolocated to 1st GTA's AOR as of March 15th. Oryx and his team may have the metadata to achieve this. 8/End

The loss of Russian T-80Us can be devided into three time periods: 1) the lost during the offensive maneuver of the 1GTA in Sumy from Fe b 24 to March 22; 2) during the Ukr counterattack at Trokstyanets from Mar 23-25; and 3) during the battle of Izyum in April. 3/n

We shall not forget that there are hundreds of "unknown type of tanks" in Oryx's list, 20 of which were recorded before March 22. Estimation: T-80U contributes to 11% of total recorded Russian Tank losses. Therefore 11% of these 20 tanks = 2 pieces are T-80U. 6/n

1, By end of November 2022, there has been no significant changes on the front. The war had entered a stage of attrition. No major reserves held by Russians. Tank losses are basically happened in a series of skirmishes and drone attacks all across the front.

According to Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI)'s International Arms Transfer Database (which is, frankly speaking, not 100% accurate), some 7400 T-72s were exported by the USSR from 1970 to 1991. 4/n

Opps, seems that I forget 2 unidentified T-80 variants in the 413th Comm Battalion of the 4th GTD. (I thought there had been no tanks in the comms btn since the end of the Cold War!) I don't know if they are T-80Us or T-80BV/BVMs but anyway this don't change our results a lot.

According to V.Feskov (2013) , a total of 5144 T-72s were fielded by the USSR as of late 1980s in the CFE area (excl. Siberia, Central Asian, Turkestan, Transbaikal, and Far East MDs). A couple of divisions were missing in these charts but they won't make a big difference. 5/n

The result is: whole Russia reported 62 T-80U losses till March 15, @oryxspioenkop reported 46 (74%). If we include all the losses tallied until March 22, then we have a total of 49(79%). 5/n

The Soviet Army ended in 1991 with some 8300 T-72 tanks. Among them, ~1800 were acquired by Central Asian countries, ~800 acquired by Trancaucasus countries, ~1160 acquired by Belarus, ~600 by Ukraine. 9/n

If we add these numbers up, we have the number of 7400+5144+1800+1400=15700. Given that the first batch of T-72s were introduced in 1970, which was 20 yrs before the end of the Soviet Army, it is possible that some 2000 early T-72 Urals had already been retired from service. 8/n

2. Among Russian tank fleets, the T-72B3s are somehow unique. They are in relatively good shape, Russia doesn't have reserves of them, and their numbers are large enough to be statistical significant.

The Transbaikal MD (incl. the 39th Army in Mongolia) was another major user of the T-72: no less than 1400 should had been fielded; the Far Eastern MD, however, was fielded with T-80s. 7/n
