The Ritz! A perfect place for lunch after getting my OBE from the King at Buckingham Palace. The staff and kitchen were on top form and clearly I’m ready for a top up of this scrumptious Fleurie 2020 Domaine de Fa which positively purred with succulent Suffolk lamb.

There’s only one rule for English Wine Week - everybody- and that means you- HAS to drink at least one bottle of English wine. Preferably from a winery local to you, a member of your own community- the one you live in and are so keen to preserve in tough times. Now’s the time...

Proudly receiving my Officier Gong from the Ambassador at the stunning French Residence in Kensington Palace Gardens. And, of course, ace ultra-French patisserie canapés and very tasty Mumm Champagne. The Entente Cordiale is 120 years old this year. Long may it continue

A terrible bereavement this week. I needed something to celebrate all the bottles we’d shared- the old and filthy, the wild, wonderful and weird. I chose La Lagune 1982. Just, just right. How good? A 98? Please…There’s no mark for a wine that helps to mend a broken heart.

1985 . One of the truly superb Bordeaux vintages, dismissed by the old time curmudgeons as being simply too delicious to be great. What? Like 1982, 1961 , 1959 and 1953? Yeah, really tough when a wine never goes through a bad patch and is sheer joy at 48 years old. Happy Christmas

Hmmm.NYE. thought I’d be classic & cool so I whacked open a Taittinger 89 - it has party fizz still but too Sherryish to shimee. So here’s a 6 yo Moët NV- on the dull side- but 6 parts Moët 4 parts Taittinger 89-and - wow - utterly enticing fizz. I think I’m going to Charleston.
