A friend was kind enough to toss me an invite to Bluesky earlier this evening. I'm still learning how it works and what its current limitations are, but it definitely reminds me of Twitter about a decade ago!
To mass remove spec mods from weapons, open DIM, and paste this into the search bar:
is:weapon (keyword:"major spec" OR keyword:"minor spec" OR keyword:"boss spec" OR keyword:"taken spec" OR keyword:"Adept Big Ones")
Then click the menu button and select “Strip Sockets”.
Just two more days until The Final Shape goes live!
Friendly reminder though that only 23 hours remain until the servers go offline for maintenance (June 3 at 9am PT)! Tomorrow is going to be an extremely busy day for me and a number of other teams as we prep for launch.
I just learned that you can visit Luna's gravesite on the moon. I had no idea, but I immediately had to go pay my respects to one of the best dogs in Destiny!
Here's the official statement.
Before you ask, there are plenty of things I'd like to say, but nothing I say will make a terrible situation any better. If you work in the industry and are hiring, please reach out to those that were affected. We let go of some amazing people!
The TWID will return next week with new updates from the Crucible Strike Team. Today, we have an update to the community from the Destiny 2 Development Team:
I’m so glad we said this!
There have been so many times over the years where I wish we could have said we were DDoSed . I understand why we can’t and generally shouldn’t, but it’s always frustrating to hear “Destiny servers/services suck” when it’s sometimes just a DDoS attack.
Over the past couple of days, we've seen a spike in error codes and disconnects. The team has confirmed that these error codes are not related to the planned fixes rolling out for the recent crafting issue and are instead a result of DDoS attacks. While we typically don't confirm
The Witch Queen, but not for the reasons you might expect. Beyond Light was the first expansion I worked on, but WQ was the first launch I felt truly responsible for. I found a late breaking issue five days before launch and worked extremely hard to mitigate it for launch.
🧵
Liana is one of the hardest working, most passionate people I've ever met. I'm devastated to hear that she's been let go! She has been such an incredible advocate for players and for accessibility.
This is a huge loss for Bungie. If you're looking for a CM, she's an amazing one!
Well... my heart is breaking for all affected
I am now looking for opportunities. I have 21 years of games industry experience in media, production, and community management. I'm processing,I'm so heartbroken. I don't know what to do from here... this was my home. I feel so lost
Eight years ago, I remember sitting at my desk at Lids constantly checking my phone to see if Amazon had delivered my limited edition copy of
@DestinyTheGame
for the Xbox 360. The whole drive home I kept thinking of the menu music. I was mesmerized by the concept art menu. (1/10)
@PWBread
I really wish the community realized how much the community team advocates for them. One of their primary functions is to monitor community feedback and collate/aggregate it into something actionable for the team. When they say "we're listening", they're not joking!
I'm so glad we're finally sharing a bit more info on some of what's been happening behind the scenes! I (and many others internally) have been rather vocally pushing for more transparent communication about it for a while. Hopefully this sheds a bit of light on a bit of it.
Today, we’re providing new details on recent stability issues, how we’re tracking them, what we’re doing to improve game stability, and when to expect updates to go live:
*Reposted due to QT error.
Here's a quick summary of the key points: ⬇️🧵
I’m glad I can finally say that no rollbacks are planned! Thank you to everyone who reached out with well wishes yesterday! As a DRE, rollbacks are never fun and a bit stressful, but as a player, they’re potentially devastating! I’m so thankful we didn’t have to pull that lever!
UPDATE: We're working on two fixes for this issue. There are no plans for a rollback.
For the first fix, deploying within the next 24 hours, we’re building a server-side update that will disable all crafted weapons from being equipped. Players will still be able to craft weapons
Getting that change into the game is my proudest contribution for Final Shape! I logged three separate bugs on it and zealously advocated for it in multiple triages. I specifically said "The first thing every D1 vet is going to do when they load into the D1 Tower is check this!"
So glad that people are discovering that the fan button is back!
I can take no credit in doing the work, but I can say I was EXTRA annoying in asking for the fan button every time i saw the D1 Tower.
I’m so glad I can now talk about one of my favorite secrets that’s ever been added to Destiny!
Activating "Good Boy Protocol" makes me smile every single time.

“Hey mom, get the camera!” I guess I’m famous now.
@Aztecross
apparently decided to quote me in one of his videos.
For anyone new coming from his channel, hi, I’m David and I work on databases at Bungie. I play a lot of Destiny and help keep it running behind the scenes.
I don’t usually think of myself as a game dev, though people are quick to point out how much of an impact I have on Destiny as a live game.
I’m David and I’m a Data Platforms Engineer at

Four years ago today, I started as a mid level Database Engineer at
@Bungie
. It feels very surreal to be able to say that I’ve now worked a third of my career at one of my favorite game studios! It’s even more surreal looking back to everything I’ve done here so far!

I was always blown away by how much Lance Reddick cared about Destiny and its community. For those that don’t know, he voiced Zavala, but also actively played the game too! He was the Titan Vanguard and a Warlock main.

If you told me 3 years ago that, not only would I be working for
@Bungie

My coworkers are incredibly talented and did some amazing work with Witch Queen! I can’t wait for you all to play it!
I’ve been an engineer at
@Bungie
for over four years now, but it still blows my mind that I’m looking at and compiling code for Marathon right now.
The imposter syndrome is real!
But the dirty secret about imposter syndrome? We all have it. I’m not alone and neither are you!
I rarely have a direct, tangible impact on the development of Destiny. Usually, I work behind the scenes to keep it running.
...but a designer just reached out to show me a thing I pitched in game! I'm so excited!
Unfortunately, you'll have to wait a bit to see it, though.
😉😇
It’s crazy to think that two years (and one day, since I can’t count) ago I started at
@Bungie
. In that time, I’ve rolled back/restored half the player data, designed and architected the data back end for Bungie Friends, and supported every patch, season, and expansion launch.
I’m so excited that we’ve announced the Vault From Orbit feature!
I still think it’s best to have
@ThisIsDIM
or a similar app open on a second screen, your phone, or a tablet, but tons of players aren’t aware of tools like these. And this makes the game much better for them!

Honestly? The leveling system. It would require a fundamental redesign of a ton of things, but I *hate* being locked out of endgame activities that I want to do because I haven't had a ton of time to play or my RNG was poor. That's why I LOVED Season of the Drifter in 2019.
Just two more days until The Final Shape goes live!

I often say that the worst part of my job is having to keep secrets. Well, that feeling is real today. I just did something in a playtest that, had it been in the live game, I would be all over Twitter talking about it. But alas, all I can say for now is...
B U N G I E
I’m so glad we’re finally revealing the Skimmer! After using that exclusively in a recent long form playtest, it’s been rough to go back to the live game and not have it!

I love it when we talk about stuff like this publicly! Please pardon our dust!
Ironically, I was off on 7.3.6's launch day (kid's spring break) and was one of the players getting constant error codes. But the team did an amazing job of tracking down the issue and correcting it!

The launch itself was a massive success, especially in terms of stability of the database side. But, despite my mitigations, the issue still presented. It took an 11 months for me and several other cross discipline engineers to resolve it, but we did it! And without any downtime!
Fun fact. At Bungie, one of the tools we use is called a OneBox - it's a self contained mini Destiny dev environment that runs primarily on your workstation. The DBs are on a server, though, so I tend to look at them in aggregate. Is the plural of it OneBoxes? Nope it's OneBoxen.
Now that Lightfall is live and (relatively) stable, I’m finally taking a much needed break! I just sent my hand off email and set up my out of office for the next couple of weeks.
Now to focus on playing the game instead of maintaining it!
So all that said, The Witch Queen is the expansion I've enjoyed the most because of the tangible impact I had on the live game.
Also, the campaign was pretty incredible!
When I posted this last year we hadn’t announced
@MarathonTheGame
yet. As much as I love Destiny, Marathon has made me feel the most like a game dev…though that still feels weird to say.

Something else that most people outside of software dev (not just game dev) don't realize is that, more often than not, QA *does* catch bugs that ship. But they still ship because of other reasons outside of QA's control.
It's been two years and I'm still extremely impressed by
@Bungie
's pandemic response. Every few weeks, we get an email from our COO updating us on our covid response and studio plans. But my favorite thing is that the bulk of the email is the data informing their decisions!
I guess I get to do the thing too!
Maybe it’s imposter syndrome, but it still blows my mind every time I log into work or walk into the studio.
I said it in that recruiting video and I’ll continue to:
@Bungie
is the best company I have ever worked for.
I'm extremely proud of the work we did and how effectively we were able to mitigate a horrible issue. I can't go into specific details, but unmitigated, it resulted in random players randomly getting error codes that kicked them to the login screen *at any point in the game*.
Courtesy of this week's TWAB, here's a bit more info about what actually caused the issue earlier this week and what we were doing all night Tuesday night/Wednesday morning. Again, check the
@Destiny2Team
account for more info about this and other Destiny related info.
I've been playing since day one of Destiny 1 and, as both a player and a dev, I'm so happy with how Final Shape turned out!
What an ending to a ten year saga! I can't wait for what comes next!

I had a super busy day in real life today, but now the kid is in bed and my wife is hanging out with her best friend. Time to finally play Excision in the live game!
And with that, my team’s downtime work is complete! (Other teams are still doing work that requires downtime, of course).
We go out of our way to do as much as we can without requiring downtime, but it’s amazing how much faster you can get some database tasks done when down!
It finally happened! Touch of Malice finally dropped on my 51st looted clear (60th overall). Thank you to everyone who helped with running that every week!! (Now for a catalyst run…)

I'm much happier with the fix this time. I really wish I could talk about what was going on - it was a pretty interesting problem space.
Now to see if there are any other fires!
Thank you to everyone who reached out today. I still have a job, but so many amazingly talented people do not! If you’re in the industry and have some openings, please send them their way! They all deserve so much better than this!
This morning, we shared an important update with the Bungie team on the difficult decision to eliminate 220 roles at Bungie.
You can read the full statement below.
It's me, Joe, your local Destiny 2 Game Director, wading into the waters of the internet to talk about increasing the base difficulty of the Vanguard Ops playlist.
Alright, I can finally log off for the night...and then log into Destiny to start playing Final Shape!
Thank you all for your patience today! Here's hoping tomorrow goes a bit more smoothly!
To alleviate the high volume of error codes, we are implementing a new mitigation plan that will involve a rolling restart of our servers. This may result in some players getting kicked from their activities in progress beginning at 8:45 PM PDT.
We will provide another update on
I cannot begin to express how unbelievably excited I am for this game! I often say that the worst part of my job is keeping secrets and I'm so happy for this to be public now. I cannot wait for everyone to get to play this!
Sigh. I hate leveling in Destiny so much. All I need to hit GR9 is to get to 1810. And all I needed for that was a helmet, a chest piece, and a heavy weapon. I got eight pinnacle drops tonight...and I did get a heavy weapon! But then I got seven pairs of shoes and gauntlets. 😑
Lots of good info in this TWAB, but the thing I’m most excited about is that we’re finally releasing Hardware! That’s something I’ve been pushing for internally for literally years now!
(Not that I had anything to do with it. 😅 The team that made it is amazing!)

They called it "The Traveler". And its arrival changed us. Great cities were built on Mars and Venus. Mercury became a garden world. Human lifespan tripled. It was a time of miracles. We stared out at the galaxy and--wait, you're all asleep?!?
The Witness has retreated from the monolith - but, an important battle awaits.
We'll need all Guardians available to help us defeat the Witness, once and for all.
Rally with us and launch into Excision, a newly unlocked 12-player activity.
When I playtested Strand on Warlock, I focused primarily on Threadlings. But in the live game, I'm really loving the debuff/cc build with Necrotic Grips and Osteo Striga. I guess I am enjoying a poison subclass after all?
I also love this look for it paired with NG's ornament!
At Bungie, we have a New Hire Lunch program where the first six months you work there, any FTE can take you out to lunch and the company will reimburse it. The very first new hire lunch I scheduled was with the music team. They are just as awesome and nice as they are talented!
🚨BREAKING🚨
Bungie is currently looking for new office space after Michael Salvatori and his team burned their current building to the ground writing the Soundtrack for Destiny 2: The Final Shape.
@NumskullDesigns
I really miss the sense of mystery that D1 had. Don't get me wrong, we're in a much better state now, especially story wise, but I miss the feeling of discovery that came with not knowing how many exotics there were or what they did, for instance.
I don't often think of myself as a game dev, though I guess I have been one for about four years now. I have a few more gray hairs now (courtesy of the kid), but overall, I don't think I look that different.
We’ve got updates on the rollout for the BRAVE arsenal starting April 9, plus some important callouts to highlight just how much loot you’ll be swimming in during Destiny 2: Into the Light.
I love Bungie's New Hire Lunch program so much! I just got to have lunch with
@Mercules904
and talk Destiny sandbox design stuff for an hour. It's such a great way to get to know people outside your team/department!
@NancePants95
While I appreciate the sentiment, please don't order pizza to the studio! Many of us are working remotely, but it would be a security hazard to those that are there.
My suggestion for how to help is the same as it always is: Please be kind to others and take care of yourself!
Our investigation and testing continues. To set expectations, this issue will not be resolved tonight.
We are estimating a timeline of 3-4 AM PST tomorrow, January 25, for our fix to get deployed. Timeline subject to change.
More info will be provided once available.
Week 4 of Pantheon (Nezarec Sublime) is incredibly fun, but incredibly difficult. My team spent almost 11 hours at it today and got 5/8 bosses done. I'm hoping to finish it tomorrow.
I've joked that I've retired from day one raids, but this really scratches that itch!
It’s 1am the night before Final Shape launches…and I’m so excited I haven’t been able to fall asleep yet! Tomorrow is going to be a very busy, very long day, so I really need to. But I seriously can’t wait for everyone to play it!!
See you in the Pale Heart in just a few hours!
I'm so glad we got this into the game! I remember discussing options to make character deletion more intentional during the character deletion investigations we did back in Dec/Jan.
Hopefully this will significantly reduce the number of accidental deletions going forward!
We've recently added a bit more complexity to prevent accidental character deletions.
You don't need to delete your Hunter to test it — this feature is now live.

It's always a balancing act. And it's always a TON of work. But in my personal opinion, it's also always worth the amount of work it takes. Like I said, I wish so badly we could be more transparent more often.
@ltzShadow
There is a ton of QOL stuff that we take for granted that wasn’t in D1. Stuff like mantling, launching activities from within destinations (you used to have to go from patrol to orbit to the tower instead of directly there from patrol), seeing yourself on the map, etc.
@CT0197
Like others are saying, you generally don’t want to acknowledge it. Many groups that do this do it for the notoriety or recognition, so public acknowledgment is what they’re wanting. Plus, if they see that it works, they (and others) are more likely to try again.
The Final Shape is near! Make sure to turn in all of your seasonal and playlist vendor engrams! And make sure you have the gear you want on your character. The API is usually down for a bit. Lastly, check your sound settings! Cutscenes usually play before you can get to settings.
The closer we get to Final Shape launching, the more excited I'm getting. I remember one of the playtest notes I gave was "I just finished it...and I can't wait to do it again in the live game!"

But most of all, I'm so incredibly excited that we've announced that this beauty is coming back! I always say that keeping secrets is the worst part of my job. This is a great example!
I was talking with a friend the other day about how “Spire” is such an overloaded term in Destiny. Out of curiosity, what comes to mind first when you hear it?
I can only have four options in the poll, so I can’t fit “Other”. If that’s you, I’d love to hear it in the replies!
