When I taught isiXhosa classes at UCT 99% of 1st year classes were made up of white foreign students here for a semester or 2, usually learning so they can volunteer on projects in the surrounding townships. I don’t recall a single South African (black/white) in those classes.

It’s so interesting how poor people/residential buildings have had their power cut for non-payment for years (the residential building I live in in the CBD as 1 definite example) & yet very wealthy corporates have been allowed to accumulate their debts to millions. Must be nice.

When I tell you Afro-xenophobia is coming for all of us, I need you to take me serious. During a recent assault I was told I'm from Zim because my Zulu & Xhosa "don't sound right". I, who is born and bred in KZN/EC. I, who translates texts from and into both languages. Be afraid.

Seems ‘CBD Twitter’ is not so much Twitter people who live in the CBD but Twitter people who hold certain kinds of beliefs. It’s a classist concept at core, associating the kinds of views people hold with where they would supposedly live, with that place deemed backwards. Yes/No?

It's moved past being a vocabulary test ("What is the name of an elbow in isiZulu," for e.g.) to being an accent/tone/phonetic test. Which it would, naturally, because the fundamental basis of the obsession is idiotic. We really cannot sit by and accept the Afro-xenophobia in SA.

Been seeing tweets that the BOYCOTT by SA of Miss Universe in Israel is hypocritical given we still import (TRADE) products from Israel. These are two rather different activities, the latter being mainly governed by SA’s obligations under international trade & public intrnl laws.

I’m glad to see so many people’s lively interest in issues related to the formal study, learning, development and promotion of African languages in SA, but I’ve muted this chat. Just started my workday, and generally not a big fan of mid-week viral discoursing tweets. Nibesafety.

Few contemporary artists, in my mind, shook South Africa’s fine art scene to the extent (and for as long as) Nandipha Mntambo did from around her first solo exhibition in 2007 till around the launch of the Zeitz in 2017. Her cowhide sculptures were a cut above the rest. Sublime!

Try being radical with a bond and kids (a bond of their own), intertwined families (another bond by any other name), a job and bills. You literally must Sobukwe life or just get around it. And most people don’t have the courage let alone ability to Sobukwe their way through life.

You see 73 people dead and your first thought is: it’s their fault. And a government with all the resources and mechanisms and the state purse at its disposal is here crying foul and playing victim and you have scores of people cheering them on?! The f***! 🤯

One last thing. I’m gonna need all the jazz lovers on my TL to listen to Lupi Ngcayisa at #GloriaBosman ’s memorial service tear into you and read you for filth for your supposed snobbery! 😂 But he was really such a great MC for this occasion, really did such a wonderful job. 👏🏾

The light that was #GloriaBosman has gone out of the jazz and music worlds. Condolences to the family and to those that knew and were close to her. Gratitude remains, always, for the music and for all those she’s left behind, inspired and guided by her example and experiences. 🙏🏽

I recall as a child being rudely and urgently woken in the middle of the night/early hours of morning by my mother, who pulled me to go hide emasimini with her because the men had arrived to raid our home. We hid there until I fell asleep and she must have carried me back to bed.

At some point my mother attempted dressing me up as a girl so those goons wouldn’t kill me too, by sheer luck I was a little too young to be forced to join either IFP or ANC at the time. Many boys who did are long dead or recently came back from prison.

I’ve become what my parents used to be and what I thought I wouldn’t become: I’ve stayed in one job @TandF_Africa for 7 years! Even I don’t believe it. I’ve never done any one thing besides school for this long. Strangely, however, I’m quite proud of myself. Well done me. 👏🏽

It’s basically a mystical spiritual tradition, but most people have only encountered spirituality through the rituals of organised religions and therefore don’t know how to speak of/practice African spirituality without imposing the rubric/s of an organised religious tradition.

A very brave book by a very brave woman during a time fraught with tension. I hope she’s well where she is; the imprecise impression I got was that her career (and character) really took a knock from writing this book and she had very few public defenders. 🥹

Can’t recall who said that the history of writing is a history of writers having conversations, and last night reminded me of that. Famous academe chef @Sugarintheplum hosted @percyzvomuya & I to feast on mouthwatering Sri Lankan curry & engage in expansive, soul-reviving talk.😌

Pleased to report I have finally showered (8 or so days later) and I still look pretty. So. And more importantly, while others are out jogging, I am finally at my desk again, which seemed impossible for so long I thought it would never happen again. Pandemic + depression = Mess.

‘The story told by the data was clear. It was in the taxi industry that a large market for assassination was born. And as that market grew, so others began to hire its vendors, until contracted killings had become entrenched in several other parts of SA society.’

Heidi, Operation Dudula is a vigilante formation & you need to start reporting on it that way. If you don’t, I PROMISE you one day you will have to answer to some Commission or even a higher court for your style of reporting their spread and activities, which possibly abets them.

Today Operation Dudula will be launching a branch in the North West. The operation has already started it’s operations in KZN as well. We’ve been told there has been a keen interest for this operation to have presence in NW. #eNCA

The level of deep, profound, unrelenting unhappiness that I and several people I know are experiencing (probably for months now) is so unsettling. I’m getting worried for all of us, and there are no solutions in sight. It’s like going into a dark night of the soul, it’s awful. 🥹

It is hard to overstate just how much South African literature changed over the last decade. Below, a sorto representative sample of fiction published in 2000 to 2010. Very different in tone to the 2011 to 2022 output, I’d say. But someone would need to do a proper study of this.
