OMG. I assumed people were wildly misinterpreting this when they said the archives would be destroying the physical copies after a digital copy was made. But nope: 'The consultation is seeking views on keeping hard copies for about 25 years'. Scholarly opinion: This is bananas.

Are you a history or ancestry enthusiast? We’re proposing to digitise millions of wills dating back to the 1800s, making them easier for the public to access. Take a fascinating look into our storage archive in Birmingham and have your say:

It's mindnumbing that (a) the British Library has to go into the reserves to salvage this rather than get government support and (b) that £7 million is apparently 40% of its reserves. That's a flagship institution. That's a cultural keystone. and flipping hell.

They're framing it as if keeping records of all the 'little people' (you'll be assured to know that they'll keep Diana's physical will) is costing 'the tax payer' too much money. a: you elitist twats b: DIGITAL STORAGE COSTS SO MUCH MONEY c: consult the BL. Oh, no, you can't.

It's the exception for the rich & famous really really galls me. Wills are notoriously one of the cool ways through which we write social histories. For some people of the past it's the only thing we hold in national archives. It's very telling about who they think belong.

Destroying these originals is a seriously bad idea. Digitization expends one form of access but destruction of originals would end another form. The cost of storage of originals, & the cost of digital access should be regarded as part of the infrastructure of an open society.

Honestly, of all the academic fields to try to potentially plagiarise/defraud, going after the people who've built a career on piecing together tiny dispersed fragments, catching little irregularities, tracing multiple contradicting versions has to be the stupidest.

For perfectly legitimate research reasons I have realised Instagram filters work on early modern portraits. My sincere apologies to Cornelius Janssen.

Excellent trolling from the Abbey here. Excellent trolling. Applause to whoever put that verse in front of the man who oozes the opposite and to the person tweeting it so dryly.

The Prime Minister, the Rt Hon Boris Johnson MP, reads from Philippians 2: 'Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility regard others as better than yourselves. Let each of you look not to your own interests, but to the interests of others.' #BoB80

Family WhatsApp reports that Belgians are hiding bears in their windows so children can go on a bear hunt while they are doing their daily trip outside. How cutesie is my country? 🧸🧸🧸 (Pictured: my mum’s effort)

Came downstairs to find my mum had made an entire fox den, because she wanted to try with some different proportions. @NthSeaCrossings @AnneLouiseAvery , next time you have a book launch or exhibition launch: I’ve got you. 🦊 🦊 🦊 🦊 🦊

I already loved #HRCintheWild & then I realised this might mean Kate McKinnon might do another SNL sketch as HRC, and now I'm over the moon.

Not Hilary Mantel. Dammit. Not Hilary Mantel. The world needed so many more of her words, her observations, her beauty, and her insight.

@MaddyPelling I love how restrained they are in the title. "Equestrian Facility". LIVE IN THE BENNETS' HOUSE, more like.

Oh. Record-keeping definitely was my grandfather’s coping mechanism. In September 2003, mere weeks after he lost his wife of 65 years, he compiled her story from the life she lived before him aided by the few pics he had. 🥺 “and now it is too late to ask her” 💔

Very naive question, but: what is different from March? There's no track-and-trace, not vaccine, no massive testing everywhere. Why can we suddenly open up everything?

Lockdown chique: not kind to anyone with glasses. If I don’t die of this virus; I’ll die of walking under a bus I didn’t see coming through my misted-over glasses...
