And this is for a tiny indie studio with very limited funding. It has nothing to do with a skills shortage.
We've got some exciting news! Knights and Bikes has been optioned for a TV series by

Game designer question:
I'm getting ideas for my game from almost everything I watch or play.
Where is the line between healthy inspiration and the horrible upheaval of constantly changing your mind to chase the new hotness?
Has anyone been in a state where you're working normal hours, loving your work, but feel completely exhausted all the time? Is it burn out? It feels just like burn out, but none of the likely causes are there. Non-work life is great too. I'm a bit baffled.

After working with Unity for 7 years now, I just realised a PropertyDrawer is a thing that draws the UI for the property. Because the first few I encountered were collapsible, I thought it was a drawer like in a shelf, a little place to put properties out of sight.

Knights and Bikes has been nominated for TWO IGF awards!! I just can't even fathom, especially this year of insanely good games. Hmm... maybe I will be going to GDC this year after all.
In programming, we don't say "I love you," we say "I wrote a tool to automate that so you can focus your energy on creative tasks" and I think that's beautiful.
I can finally say it! We'll be showing off what we've be up to at Team Artichoke in this year's Wholesome Direct! Can't wait to share this with you all! Tune in on June 8th 9AM PT / 5PM BST.
📺 Wholesome Direct will premiere Sat, June 8
⏰ 9am PT / 12pm ET / 6pm CET
✨ A vibrant lineup of artistic, uplifting, and emotionally resonant games from developers of all sizes from around the world!
The Knights and Bikes novel is out today!
@GabrielleKent
did such a wonderful job of putting her own spin on our world and characters (making it spoiler free for the game). Thanks

I love the level of polish in late stage game development. Right now I'm taking a look at the fact that the shadows on our apples (plural) are insufficiently fancy compared to other objects in the game. :) Ah. That's better.
🥳 We've hit 5,000 Wishlists for Mythmatch!! 🥳
Before we announced, I told myself I'd panic if we got less than 2,000 and I'd feel good going forward if we got 5,000 so I'm feeling pretty great right now!
Thanks
@_wholesomegames
for shining a spotlight on us!

I asked my wife to invite me to her calendar events and she refused claiming she doesn't know how. When I went to invite myself, I learned she puts her events at random times and types the time of the event in the title. So there's a "Santa's Grotto at 2" set at 10AM. Not okay.
Calling Content Creators!
We're announcing our Greek Mythology community sim on Saturday at Wholesome Direct!
If you'd like an email once it's live about how to play it and a link to our press kit, just pop your info into the form linked below.
To make sure you don't accidentally get turned to stone, stay focused on the Wholesome Direct on Saturday! We'll be announcing the Greek myth game we've been working on for the last 2.5 years!
I'm looking for more games like Beacon Pines and I think I mean
- Short
- Narrative arc
- Has gameplay other than text
- Has a literal storyline (not just allegory)
- Not primarily about grief or depression
Any suggestions?
And no shade at other games. Just loved BP so much!
My almost-two-year-old son stole my Switch and has been playing Knights and Bikes for about 30 minutes. Considering that we can't get him to focus on anything for more than a minute, I'm taking this as a win.

Less than two weeks until we announce our Legally Blonde meets Greek Mythology community building game. If you'd like to chat about it for a podcast or article to come out with / after the announcement (June 8th), jump in my DMs.
NEWS
Round 8 companies announced today!
"With the total number of funded projects in the UK Games Fund portfolio now nearing 200, the latest additions to the community are joining the ranks of some of the UK’s most exciting indie developers."
Game Design Folks! As the only person currently focused on game design on my project, the main brainstorming tool I have is typing stream of consciousness into a doc to have a conversation w/ myself and critique my own ideas. Anyone else do this? Any suggestions of alternatives?
I'm reposting our Content Designer role for a Greek Myth community sim.
I've relaxed the UK requirement and also wanted to make it clear no programming is required.

Grabbed a cheap CCTV camera from the Black Friday sales because my wife wanted to figure out who was throwing all the rubbish in our yard. We've now caught them several times and it turns out they are foxes. Welcome to London.
I'm going to be giving a talk at Develop about some of the hiring ideas I've tried out and how they panned out for me and Team Artichoke.
One preview: You should respond to all of your applicants in a timely manner. Yes, ALL of them.
@DiscussKing
It's horrible. I make a point of responding to 100% of my applicants. I do it manually so I don't see why bigger companies can't even do it with the software they generally use.

Learning to work well with others (especially of different disciplines) will lead to better games WAY more than all the technical skills in the universe.
Oh yeah, and while I was making that job descripton on the website, I got a chance to pop in our lovely Team Artichoke logo designed by
@GuoBetty
.
I think it perfectly captures our mission of "Making Games with a Little Heart."

I'm not sure how to ask this, but can anyone think of talks or discussions around "quiet" indie devs? I'm inspired by folks like Wren & Tim (Unpacking) and Madison Karrh (Birth) while trying to figure out where I fit in as someone who is a bit more reserved, especially online.
Yesterday I was granted the highest compliment any programmer can receive.
@nictringali
wrote an entirely different game based on my code without having to ask me any questions. Also, I don't comment my code. :P
Still buzzing after an incredible Day of the Devs yesterday! Was wonderful to meet up with so many talented devs, lovely backers, and old friends. Thanks for the invite
@DoubleFine
and
@iam8bit

Speaking of behind the scenes of Knights and Bikes, here's a YouTube video I made a while back that shows some additional details about how the bikes are implemented. Warning that the video is old so the game footage and my face may look a bit different.
Taking our bikes for a spin.. behind-the-scenes edition.
3D world > 2D bike art painted in 22 directions > 3D world movement. Particles, tyre trail & cloth-flags for smoother motion overall.
Making fake realities is weird.

This is good advice, but the SLIGHT tweak that I'd put on it is to storyboard a trailer over a pitch deck because it focuses your attention to how to communicate to players rather than profit-focused organizations and I think that does serve the design better in the long run.
I don't usually celebrate my birthday, but I'll take the opportunity to share my namesake from the game and my favorite little moon ox, Agamoomnon.
So please help me share him with the world and wishlist our game, Mythmatch!
I'm working on the credits for Knights and Bikes and reminded of how great it is to see the names of all the backers, especially people I've met since the campaign and didn't know they backed. Thank you all. I'm just using KS names now, but will ask for your proper names later.
The more I've been thinking about this, the more I realise that "being an internet personality" can help, but isn't necessary to promote your games. I've been reminded of how many folks lead with their game and support that with their lives and experiences that inspired it.

I cannot express how happy I am for
@nonplayercat
and
@perplamps
! They are genuinely the most wonderful people in the world and I have been so lucky to get a chance to hang out with them and learn from them! They've captured so much joy and positivity in this game. GET IT!! ❤️
We spent the last 4 years making this lil game about collecting creatures, farming, dancing, and other stuff—and it's finally out 😭

As the waves of GDC fomo wash over me, I just remind myself of the times I've been lucky enough to go to GDC and while there, had waves of GDC fomo wash over me. At last this way, I'm not stuck in some strange city far away from my family.
I'm an American-born, Chinese programmer living in the UK who also dabbles in game design, bizdev, and whatever else comes up while being half of

Is there a term for the weight one feels as a member of an underrepresented group to be overly cautious because they are aware some people will use their actions to judge the rest of the group? I swear there was a snappy term for this.
On Thursdays, I work on someone else's project and my son popped into my office to grab a toy and noticed. So for the rest of the night he kept saying "Why aren't you working on the matching game? When is it going to be done?" I might have a little project manager on my hands.
Do I know any narrative designers who are actively learning to code and could use a sounding board? I'm going the other direction and thinking of doing a expertise exchange sort of thing. Anyone insterested?
It's so much fun learning new things. I've felt like I've plateaued in programming for a long time and have recently been doing some narrative design and today I'm putting my first text doc writing into engine and just that change in context has opened my eyes to so many things.
Now that Mythmatch (and the demo) are out there, I wanted to thank the wonderful team who made all the stuff you see in the demo.
Let's start with
@GuoBetty
who drew all the wonderful worlds and characters!

After my first conference in a long while, just a reminder to manually include new people into conversations. I remember how intimidating it was when I started out and made a concerted effort this weekend and the relief on people's faces is still beaming in my memory.
When all your friends are posting about their games in the Steam Summer Sale and you wonder if past-you remembered to set up a discount.
And he did! Knights and Bikes is 50% off during the sale!

Finally have a second to reflect on an amazing week.
@developconf
was short, but amazing. Did bunch of stuff: press interview, advice meeting, pitch, roundtable, award show and they all seemed to go great. And great chats with amazing folks in between.
Watched Inside Out with little one in preparation to see Inside Out 2 and he asked me what was going on when Joy fills a bag with imaginary boyfriends and I don't know what it says about my parenting, but when I explained it's like green Tinykins, he understood immediately.
Knights and Bikes — the hand-painted, co-operative adventure game with bike riding, frisbee throwing, goose petting, friendship building, and treasure hunting — is now available.

The prototype team for Goddess of the Hunt is complete! So excited to be working with
@GuoBetty
(of LUNA The Shadow Dust fame) to the team! Just got the first batch of art from her and just 😍😍😍😍
This was my first full time week on my indie project and I started it with 25 open tasks for a new feature prototype. An hour and a bit left in the week and it's done, video recorded, and build uploaded for the team to check out. Rewarding myself by watching some game showcases.
Genuinely blown my mind.
My son got a little circuit set from his school fair so we've been turning on light bulbs and stuff and he wanted to copy the image on the box and it's a functioning radio.
Time to read the manual!
I always forget to tweet these things but if there's somehow anyone who follows me, wants to play Knights and Bikes, but hasn't, it's 50% off on Steam right now.

I HAVE SURVIVED!
Just finished a talk I gave at my son's school. It was super fun and the kids were super engaged!
And my evening meeting has been cancelled so I might just nap today.
I know they say being an adult is saying that things will calm down if you can get through the next two weeks, forever, but genuinely, I hope I can get through this week. Lots of good things, but I may have said yes to too many.
@danthat
If someone starts your game, you assign them an NFT and they cannot get rid of it until they finish it. That NFT can be read by all other games and can display appropriate messages like "this person poops their pants"
