I started a new experiment with my new “one sec” Shortcuts Automation app: it enforces to take a deep breath before opening social media. After two weeks of use, my screen time is down by more than 40%:
But how does it work?
This is very interesting.

’s latest iPhone 15 Pro review he said he has not experienced any overheating other than when using Instagram and listening to music.
Is this whole iPhone 15 Pro overheating fiasco just because of Instagram? 🤔
✨ out now: one sec v3.3.7 for iOS with many bug fixes and improvements:
⏳You can now set up app-specific intervention durations.
🧑🔬Adds a new study, in collaboration with one sec's UX designer
@donatuswolf
, who is exploring aspects of one sec in his master's thesis.

When you're scrolling through your feed on Twitter, do you ever stop to think about why you're doing it? What is it that you're looking for?
Take a moment and breathe with
#onesec
I didn't know
@one_sec_app
has a browser extension.
some of you might find this useful.
if you can't control yourself it can remind you or prevent you from accessing a website.
“Is it me who takes my phone out of my pocket or is it my phone that takes me out of my pocket?” 🤔
Danish podcast, we talked about one sec (interview is towards the end of the episode, in English):
Er det mig, der tager min telefon op af lommen eller er det min telefon, der tager mig op af lommen? 🤔

har lavet app'en One Sec, der får dig til at tænke to gange før du åbner din favorit-tidsfordrivs-app. Hør mere tilsidst i programmet:
The real reason why we added the link between
@structured_app
and one sec: we don’t want you to hustle 24/7 – take intentional breaks that actually help to recover!
Your ability to focus, your creative energy, your emotional/social energy – won’t come back from scrolling!
We’ve fixed a technical bug that was preventing timelines from loading and Tweets from posting. Things should be back to normal now. Sorry for the interruption!
Why not tackle what you want to do after scrolling on social media right away? And if you’re here to take a break: put your phone away and take a proper break, scrolling on Twitter doesn’t help at all!
✨ Happy to announce I’m filling in a new important position:
@GruningJ
is one sec’s lead scientist!
His responsibilities: funneling all research, and organizing experiments within the app.
There are many cool things to come 😏

if you're interested on the psychology behind one sec, I have conducted a study with some psychologists last year. preprint available here:
One sec by
@frederikRiedel
has changed the way I use my phone. This is my stats after about 2 months, I had 600 less app openings. This is much different than screen time and it works!
progress of the android version of one sec is looking good so far 🥰
and the setup is actually much easier!

We all know that we should spend less time on social media.
Science knows it for years: time spent here increases our risk for mental discomfort while giving us few benefits. So why don’t you stop scrolling now, your tomorrow self will thank you.

@pechenkitaTV
Thanks a lot for the shout-out Leandro!
The android version is available as beta:
I also made desktop browser extensions, they are platform-independent:

I agree! And that’s why I made one sec. There are some positive aspects of all these apps (Instagram, YouTube, Reddit, etc), that’s why we started using them in the first place!
It’s all about the balance: using the apps intentionally, with a clear purpose.
@knitandlisten
That’s great feedback! You could use the intervention schedule to disable the intervention for a specific time frame, but then the breathing exercise is gone as well.
I’ll add your suggestion to my todo list!
@SanjaWilliams1
@frederikRiedel
Great! Yeah, it’s a bit complicated because this is integrating so deeply with the operating system. But well worth to go through the process :)
@benpasternak
haha yeah I asked that question myself 2.5 years ago. the only real value is because everyone is using it. apart from that, it actually makes my life worse.
that’s why I created this app:
@TechHighest
Sorry about that, I assume this is on Android? We’re working hard to fix all these bugs. It’s not easy to maintain this app on android with such a wide variety of devices with all their special quirks.
@Boyektre
We started development of the Android version more than one year after iOS version was released. But: big update coming soon, more and more features will move over to Android as well!
hilariously, it's almost impossible to AI-generate someone tossing a smartphone. my guess: dall-e is trained with so many images of people holding phones that it probably thinks it's part of the body, i.e. like asking for an image of someone tossing their own hand
@RodChristiansen
one sec is all about the delay / friction added to opening apps. For the use-case you’re looking for I’d much rather recommend checking out ScreenTime+, which is an app that I’ve created with a friend using iOS 16’s new Screen Time API!
@mark_histed
Sorry, just saw this now. There has been a bug on the new Xcode version that broke app extensions on some devices.
Please update to the latest version of one sec, I have introduced a workaround / bug fix.
@LiveThinkWork
@ImprovPatryk
@EndelSound
I’m actually working on an android version right now! It’s gonna work differently because no Shortcuts are available on Android, but I found a way to make it technically possible. Download the beta here:
🪲Fixes a bug where healthy alternatives would not be displayed in the “black screen” and “rotate phone” interventions.
🐜Fixes an issue where the minimal intervention settings wouldn't allow you to customize the breathing phrase.
