This is Italy right now. More infections per capita than the UK, just one fifth as many vaccinated, but restaurants and shops are open, there are no stay at home orders or travel restrictions, and schools are open.

Spain has just made masks mandatory on the beach. Two things we've learnt in the past year are: 1. Catching Covid outside is fiendishly difficult. 2. Masks have made little, if any, difference. So, I ask simply, why? And why now? It will put off tourists, myself included.

Last year my grandma died of dementia in a care home. Those who looked after her in dreadful circumstances were among the most hard-working and selfless people in Britain. It takes a special person to do that job. Now 60,000 of these heroes have been sacked. What a betrayal.

While many countries are easing travel rules, France is making things harder. Vaccinated Britons will no longer be allowed to visit if they received their second jab more than 270 days ago. Unvaccinated Britons remain barred. Oh well, plenty of other places to spend our money.
