For young surgeons speed as an end goal is overrated. I think back to the martial arts I did as a kid- Technique leads to speed which leads to power. You get get faster by doing it right once. And it's totally okay to make it as simple as you need it to be. #Avoidthestrugglebus

You'd be surprised how little it takes to make a med students day, month, year or career. Have a daily plan for them even if it's small. Give them talks and acknowledge them. They're just trying to be like you. #startedfromthebottom

Trainees...GO TO CLINIC. Talked a patient through the treatment strategy for his advanced esophageal cancer. I realized I must have stolen no less than 10 phrases and techniques from watching mentors over the years. Learning style just as important as knowledge.

Potentially unpopular take: I never liked all the pomp and circumstance around match day. There are plenty of lows to go with the highs. The match is intrinsically unfair and I’m not sure the outcomes, good or bad, should be broadcast to the entire school in such a public way.

Trainees...Go to clinic! And when you go, make sure you go back in the room with the attendings. Knowing the plan is one thing but watching how someone with experience communicates, educates and develops a theraputic relationship is so so valuable.

For procedures, keep a personal journal of how every attending does every case/procedure. Update it every time you do the procedure until it feels complete and has nuance. This is a 💴 habit if you do it early in training

I met with our vice chair of faculty affairs tto talk about the pathway to promotion and review my CV. (Yes, I'm already thinking about it) l highly recommend other young faculty do this early on. Plenty of time to enhance strengths and bolster weaknesses.

Aggressively seek to establish expectations and get feedback. More attendings and seniors than you’d like to think are uncomfortable giving feedback. Seek it out while you can still make improvement. Ego is your enemy

Today is my last day of CT residency. I've been in training for 3297 days. I am so grateful for all the experiences I've had, people I have worked with and patients I've cared for. It's gone by fast and slow at the same time. Crazy. Looking forward to the next big challenge.

When giving feedback, you should strive to have the courage to ask the learner what you could have done to better their experince. It's a two way street. Remember, it's just as hard for them to say it as it is for you to hear it.
