Yesterday there were multiple incidents of abuse towards roadworkers across regions impacted by Cyclone Gabrielle. This is unacceptable. The impacts we’ve seen in the past few weeks are devastating and distressing—we're in this together, and we have to look after each other.

Watch this barrier save a driver’s life, stopping a head-on crash with a truck. This video is from a truck driver’s dashcam. The barrier stopped the driver from travelling into oncoming traffic, slowed them down, and kept their car upright. They walked away from the crash.

Our crews are working around the clock to reopen SH25 between Opoutere and Hikuai. Here's some footage of work happening. Arborists have removed vegetation to allow a digger to increase the width and length of cut into the bank, allowing traffic to keep far away from the slip.

When you need to stop, these blocks won’t cut it. During a warrant of fitness inspectors check your brake system—pedals need to reliably slow and stop the vehicle. This vehicle has had some modifications to the brakes that affect their use, making the vehicle unsafe to drive.

Workers continue to make great progress on the bridge we're building over the slip on SH25A in Coromandel. Last week they began securing the side barriers to the bridge, which you can see in the top photo below. Over half have been secured, and the rest will be done this week.

If you're in the upper North Island, avoid all nonessential travel. Several state highways are closed due to downed trees, slips, and flooding; local roads are affected too. These photos show the impact in Auckland overnight, with our crews attending downed trees and flooding.

There've been a huge amount of slips following the extreme weather events across the upper North Island. There are two types of slips: underslips and overslips. Here’s an explanation of what each one is, and why one’s much more challenging to sort than the other.

Have you noticed we're now using our Te Reo name, Waka Kotahi as well as our English name? Waka means ‘vessel’ & kotahi means ‘one’, conveying; ‘travelling together as one’. We're doing this to support Maihi Karauna the Crown’s Strategy for Māori Language Revitalisation. Ka pai!

As this footage shows, slips are still happening on State Highway 25A in the Coromandel. You can see how unstable and wet the ground is—this is a good example of a slip in action, and how a site can continue to be affected after significant damage has already occurred.
