Despite a year in which COVID-19 limited business and activity, the Alachua County budget will increase by nearly $78 Million for the 2022 fiscal year.
I spent the day riding along with the GRACE Marketplace street outreach team, a program that gives people living on the streets of Alachua County food & basic necessities, and eventually, permanent housing. It’s at risk of being cut entirely as Gainesville scales back its budget.
Despite what has been reported, and despite the claims of Education First for Newberry, no decision on the elementary school charter conversion vote has been reversed. They are claiming a victory without any formal ruling from the FLDOE (1/2)

“Data shows that the trend of pedestrian and bicyclist traffic deaths have only increased over the past decade. In 2013, one pedestrian was killed by a vehicle in Gainesville. By 2022, that number reached 11.”

Breaking: The City of Gainesville lost its battle against the state Friday to fend off what’s been described as a takeover of Gainesville Regional Utilities.
“The Black Lives Matter movement was huge, but I didn’t feel like it represented my trans community,” she said. “I needed to make a point to be one of the trans people that spoke out to let them know, the Black community has trans people in it as well.”
I want folks in Gainesville to know that we understand that it is our job to keep the lights on,” said Mayor Harvey Ward. “I can’t, with a straight face, go to any of our constituents and say I trust that everything’s going to keep working if this passes.”
While a new state law prohibits the use of a restroom that differs from a person’s assigned sex at birth, Alachua County public schools will have single-unit unisex bathrooms that students will be able to use without having to get explicit permission.
UF Gator Lift, a transportation service, just dropped off a couple of people who walked into the building. There has been a steady stream of cars arriving at the Reitz Union and dropping voters off.

Anthony Rue is a worker with Election Protection, a nonpartisan group that aims to protect everyone’s vote. He has visited nine polling stations this morning including the Reitz Union. Everything is running smoothly across the county, he said.
Commissioner Charles Chestnut said he felt "bullied" by some of the conversations coming out of Newberry and that leaders weren't negotiating in good faith for their community. He said he was "pissed.”
Next week the GRU Authority will vote on the contract of Ed Bielarski who fired the previous GM and resigned from the authority to be named the new one. The proposed contract would make him the highest-paid employee in Gainesville history.
