Today I met a middle-aged lesbian who saw my rainbow tote bag and had no idea that there were churches that ordained gay people and now she's coming to church on Sunday. Keep standing up proud, babes
Thinking about St Paul and how I would feel if someone built an entire concept of me based on a handful of emails I wrote in widely varying states of exhaustion
This morning the organist I work with said this is his 50th Christmas at the organ bench. He started when he was 15. Everyone like this tweet and say "Merry Christmas, Gregory"
It's Pride month and I'm a gay priest and if you are part of a queer couple within three hours of Greenville SC who wants to get married I would love to talk to you!
(Offer also valid in other, not-Pride months)
First time imposing ashes and I gotta say it's a hell of a thing to remind an octogenarian and a third-grader that they're gonna die in almost the same breath
I can't quite put my finger on it but there is something so incredibly bourgeoise about churches scheduling public Morning Prayer at 9am or later. Like who is this for?
and one was a priest,
and one was a queen,
and one was both,
if you know what I mean;
for the saints of God
are just folk like me,
and I mean to be one too
Broke: Wearing a cassock as streetwear to own the libs
Woke: Wearing a cassock as streetwear to model simplicity of life
Bespoke: Wearing a cassock as streetwear bc the pockets are cavernous, seriously I could have a jar of pickles in here and no one would know, it's great
"How are you doing tonight?" I appreciate your kindness but no one ends up in a downtown Atlanta Waffle House at 11pm on Christmas Eve bc that was plan A
You've waited all week: it's Thirst-trap Thursday, the disc-horse free zone where you drop a favorite selfie and we tell you how stunning you are! Don't forget that you're ontologically hot because Jesus loves you, so don't hold out on us
Clergy folk: I'm being ordained tomorrow - I took yesterday as a quiet day and am making my confession today. What are your hot tips for surviving and thriving in 24 hours before the main event?
Just learned that the Phos Hilaron is the oldest Christian hymn outside of the Bible and I want to weep that we are still saying it every. single. day. How often we miss that the great cloud of witnesses is so desperately near at hand, guiding our very voices
It's Thirst-trap Thursday! Drop your favorite selfie(s) and let us gas you up. You can do one post or release them throughout the day. You can do a retrospective or just snap a quick one right now. NOTW: Any selfies you have are excruciatingly hot by default bc Jesus loves you
Maybe lately you've seen posts abt a young cleric who took her own life. I was friends with her and a lot of people in my world are grieving. Conversations about clergy wellness are a needful thing, but it is confounding to see strangers turning someone I knew into a platform.
Episcopal campus minister checking in. There is so much good, easy work to be done; students are desperately hungry for communities like ours. You want to grow the mainline? Stop abandoning people to be consumed by death-dealing theologies or to leave the Church entirely
One of the most important things the church can do today is plant communities on college campuses. Full time, part time, linked to churches. We must reverse the retraction from university ministry which has been budget driven not mission driven.
Are we doing women's ordination discourse again? Let me help: I owe my entire faith and vocation to women priests and I try to emulate them every day of my life. The Church would not exist without the countless women who lead and minister whether that's formally recognized or not
The church I visited today was celebrating the retirement of their music director after 32 years and when the rector said, "Your voice rings in the ears of a generation of Christians; they know the music because you have sung it," I started crying.
You know how sometimes Nickelodeon would sometimes halt all their programming for a day and literally just tell kids to go outside? I think Twitter should do that once in a while. Just replace the whole site with tasteful "take a breath and touch grass" campaign
Morning y'all! It's Thirst-trap Thursday, the day where we cease from discoursing and gas each other up via the modern wonder that is the selfie. Remember that God thinks you're hot bc God made you and loves you, so all selfies are thirst-traps! Have fun and don't be weird
Stray thought: the notion that young aspirants to ordination need to go "gain life experience" betrays a stunning lack of confidence in the worthiness of the Church's work and vision. Is being a deacon or priest in your 20s not valuable experience?
I'm grumpy so here's a hot take: individual communion wafers destroy the sign value of the sacrament and I would happily see all of them disappear forever
Dropped my car at the shop and a heavily tattooed and mulleted mechanic gave me a ride. We talked about church the whole way. "I don't consider myself a Christian, but I think I'd be Episcopalian if I did." I offered him ashes since he didn't make it on Wednesday. What a life
Concept: every Episcopalian should be expected to have a Bible, BCP, and Hymnal for each person in their home, *and they should expect their parishes to give them these things*
🟢 This year for Lent I gave up being an inquirer with a monastic order after 15 months and it was like the gentlest breakup with someone you're still very fond of and I'll probably cry about it this weekend
Very excited to share that in August I'll be joining
@TexasDiocese
as campus missioner at the Episcopal Student Center of Austin! I'll be serving the students of
@UTAustin
and supporting parishes throughout the Austin Convocation in their ministry with colleges
You know how once in a while it becomes evident that a given entity doesn't have a single person under 35 in its marketing department? It's time to talk about the PeachPass logo
Might mess around and invent the KISS model of ministry (Keep It Simple, Saints) where we don't try to do anything else until we get good at Eucharist, the Daily Office, and Bible study
Wow, hello, new followers! Welcome to whatever this is. I've been an Episcopal priest (?!) for four days and this morning I celebrated the Eucharist for the first time. I'm also gay. All of these things make me very happy! Some more things by way of introduction:
I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spiritand born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He desce
Hi! There's a pretty new BCP from InterVaristy Press. I love pretty books and the BCP. I get it. Before you spend money on this, please remember that InterVaristy opposes equal access to marriage and has advocated for conversion therapy. Your LGBTQ siblings are watching. Thanks.
It seems unlikely that I would be a practicing Christian today, let alone a full-blown priest, if not for the work of women priests. My story is unintelligible without them, every step of the way. To my mothers in the faith and sisters in ministry: thank you, thank you, thank you
The Archbishop is abusing his moral authority and he will have to answer for it on the last day, but ALSO I have fully come around on the "some coot in London actually has less than no pull in TEC and we shouldn't pretend he does" camp in a way I wasn't a few years ago
Welcome to Thrilled-to-See-You Thursday! No matter how frilled-up or frazzled you're feeling, this is the discourse-free zone where you share a selfie and we tell you just how gorgeous you are. God loves you and thinks you look fantastic and so do we. Have fun!
My diocese has developed an inclusive-language version of the Eucharist and they just... fixed Prayer C without sending it to a committee for SIX YEARS
Our diocese put out a call for high school and college students to spend a weekend asking questions about what God is calling them to do with their lives, and 19 showed up. Pray for them and their retreat leaders (🙋) as they tackle this big and holy work tomorrow!
Leaping lizards it's my 10,000th tweet AND it's Thirst-trap Thursday? Let's see your beautiful selves so we can tell you just how gorgeous you are. Don't forget that the core tenet of the day is ontological hotness in Christ so don't be afraid to boast about what God has done
I think a lot about the time when I was in a workshop with an Episcopal church planter in NC and she remarked that in her ministry Jesus is her "why" and TEC is her "how." One of those tiny moments that shifted my entire world
WHILE I MAINTAIN that violet is the superior Advent color, I find myself for the first time in a parish that uses blue and really it's not the worst thing, so I invite you to come on this growth journey with me
Stepped out of the student center to find a sobbing freshman on our doorstep, and when I tell you my mom mode activated so hard
(everything is fine, it's just hot and being 18 is hard)
Eleven years ago the world got to meet me. As I recall, my then-boyfriend and I were texting on the evening of October 10 when one of us realized that the next day was National Coming Out Day, and we impulsively decided it was time to change our relationship status on Facebook.
