Weekends are for elections. Every moment, every decision counts towards ensuring a fair process. Here's to making every vote matter 🗳

Now that the elections are over, just a reminder that voter registration is open again. It'll be open until the next local government elections in 2026
@TheoMalatji
They’re cooking you but it’s a good question. I think it’s because Palestine isn’t recognised as a full state by the UN so they don’t have “locus standi” (u can Google that). The ICJ resolves disputes between states. They tried to get full recognition but the US vetoed it
Today we're training
@EFFSouthAfrica
on the election objection processes, its legal framework, and the role of party agents in voting stations. Strengthening democracy
@IEMSA_Africa
Being involved in student politics/leadership is a prerequisite for taking up leadership positions in the professional world. You can tell when someone has never chaired a meeting in their life. You can tell when someone has never experienced intense criticism before
There's probably a reasonable explanation but the IEC needs to be more proactive about its communication, especially when it knows that there are organised attempts to delegitimize it. It really is not our job to be its spokesperson(s)
@Nkemel1Mahlatsi
😂😂😂
Normally when someone loses in court, they have to pay a portion of the other person's legal fees. But if the lawyers are acting in bad faith, the court can say the lawyer, not the client, must pay the other person's fees. I've never seen it done before but it's allowed
The EFF is presumably not participating because we (
@IEMSA_Africa
) trained them on the objection process before the elections so they were aware of the requirements and deadlines in Electoral Act. The rest would do well to do the same next time
🔴More Than 20 Parties Demand Stop To Results Announcement🔴
NEWS 🚨
More than 20 political parties have sent their lawyers to stop the IEC from announcing election results today. The parties which include MK, PA and ATM, say the IEC must first deal with irregularities.
There's been virtually no voter education from the IEC ahead of complicated and landmark elections. It's not surprising considering their budget cuts, but still very worrying.
It's correct that South Africans are NOT xenophobic because then that same energy would be applied to every foreigner*. I think ethnic chauvinism is the problem
*It's done to Asians to some extent, but that's another chat. I just want to focus on Africa for a second
Institute of Election Management Services in Africa's Nkululeko Tselane discusses the legal intricacies of the MK Party and IEC case. The party is fighting the IEC's decision to exclude its leader, former president
#JacobZuma
, from the May 29 ballot.
"... overseen, and its outcome was certified by, Nkululeko Tselane, an attorney of this court..."
In a High Court judgment written by my former lecturer, really made my day. Small things.
@kay_mahapa
Unavoidable with our electoral system (proportional representation). More collaboration could be good, we just need proper framework and regulations for coalitions
According to
@IECSouthAfrica
, 48% of South Africans between the ages of 20-29 have registered to vote. The highest that it's ever been for the age group. It also accounts for 77% of new online registrations. Very good progress!

The DA is calling on the US to create an alternative parallel counting system for our elections. This is dangerous and directly brings the IEC into disrepute. The same thing that they're accusing MK of doing
Why are you guys writing to foreign nations (USA and Europe) requesting them to take an active part in our elections? Does our sovereignty mean nothing to you guys?
Getting invested in toddler shows is frustrating. I got so annoyed when they changed the actor in Blippi and acted like we wouldn't notice. Take us seriously chief, that's not Blippi 🙄
I run elections for government and private sector. SRCs, board elections, traditional councils, political parties, pension funds etc. My day-to-day is running elections with the largest private election management body in the country
@IEMSA_Africa
@deeshroom
White supremacy is corruption. Nepotism, promotion without merit, embezzlement, suppression of media, lack of accountability, lack of service delivery etc....
Kgosientsho Ramokgopa really inspires confidence. Even when he speaks about load reduction, which is a local government issue, you get the impression that he's got a plan to solve it
The lines are not long because of voter turnout. If you've been to multiple stations, like I have, you'll see this fully a resource issue. Not enough material (how???) and inadequately trained staff. Very disappointing.
Professors phoning me to bounce ideas off my head is a new one. Small personal wins that you've got to log mentally. They come in handy when you go through the inevitable difficult periods
My kid has this quiet determination and focus when she has to perform in front of groups of people. It's fascinating to watch. I know a champion when I see one
You can still update your address AND register to vote NOW, either online or at your local IEC offices. The voters' roll (and registration) only closes when the election date has been gazetted
Best we can do is read, stay connected to grassroots engagement, and try to remain as consistent as we can on the issue that: human rights are human rights for everyone, and Africa must unite
RIP to the friend, mentor, and comrade in football Coach Lucas Mautla 🕊
One of the best people that I got to work with, at one point we were 2/3 at Wits University with our CAF badges. Gave me opportunities others wouldn't because of age.
Rest well Coacha
We must defend the IEC at all costs. We must critique when we disagree. But we must remember that it's not possible to "rig" our elections. We must defend our very difficult democracy
The issues are really related to economic scarcity across the continent (Africa was looted) and ethnic issues amongst Africans that we need to figure out. You must also remember that black South Africans have historically been robbed of nationhood so are defensive. It's valid.
It's okay to make a decision without full context but you must be willing to change your opinion and acknowledge that you were wrong - when presented with context
This app has been vile for the past few months (starting with the elections) and it's keeping that same energy. You guys need to learn to treat people with kindness and empathy again. I'm not sure what's wrong with you all
Its disingenuous to say that this ethnic chauvinism is limited to South Africans. Just look at the Shona & Ndebele in Zim. Igbo & Yoruba Nigeria. You can also simply look at the Hutus and Tutsi's in Rwanda, but let's also look at cross-border issues & look at Rwanda-DRC conflict
