🆕 Earlier this year,
@joannastern
and I reported on how thieves stole iPhones and their passcodes to devastating effect. Today, Apple announced Stolen Device Protection, a new iOS 17.3 beta feature that aims to protect against those crimes. Here’s how:
Amazon has a new “neural text to speech” engine that allows Alexa to mimic celebrity’s voices (with their permission). Samuel L Jackson is rolling out later this year.
Ring: "Ring does not use facial recognition technology."
Also Ring: Has a Head of Face Recognition research, job listing citing experience in face recognition + website for Ring Ukraine touting semi-automated crime prevention based on face recognition

Staying informed is important. But for many, including me, doomscrolling is keeping us up—and exhausted.
On why our brains are drawn to distressing news, and how algorithmically-driven infinite scroll is designed to get us hooked:

another 🆕:
we took portraits of people with the pixel 6 which claims to have the "world's most inclusive camera," the iPhone 13, and galaxy s21.
which do you think came out best?

Apple Card has an iPhone-only interface. If you lose said iPhone and need to make a payment, Apple's recommendation is to use a second iOS device (eg. iPad) or call support (not, presumably, with the phone you just lost)
🆕 did you know there’s an air quality tool built into google maps?
east coasters, here’s how you can compulsively check AQI and PMI like a californian during wildfire season:
deleting facebook, insta, messenger, AND whatsapp isn't realistic for everyone who is pissed about data collection, but there is a lot you *can* do to limit the data you give it

Please don’t buy masks unless you or a close loved one is sick.
Soap can be more effective than sanitizer.
Shortages are temporary, so don’t overpay or stress.
And if you do need to stock up, don’t get fleeced:
Echo Studio is a new high-definition music offering from Amazon that detects a room’s architecture and adjusts its tuning and bass in order to produce more immersive sound from a single speaker
We found that the FaceTime bug doesn't just give the caller access to the recipient's microphone (except if Do Not Disturb is on)... if they press volume up or down, it exposes their iPhone's front-facing camera, too
Netflix lost US subscribers (130k) for the first time, and blamed content + price hikes.
My story from Dec looked at the product team's efforts to get people to click on/watch titles they've never heard of. Turns out, that's really hard.
Turn off location history and they still track your location. Clear cookies and they clear all of them — except their own. 2018 was the year we learned "opting out" is an illusion
I looked at a lot of "Amazon's Choice"-distinguished products. What I found: troubling defects and warnings, and blatant review manipulation. Why is Amazon endorsing such obviously bad stuff?
Following my fake review story, listings for Amazon-native electronics brand RAVPower are gone.
The company offered $35 gift cards for reviews on a product that was sold directly by Amazon itself. RAVPower acted as a wholesale vendor on that listing.
Pour one out for LG Mobile. They're the reason we have ultrawides in every new phone right now. They didn't always ace every phone, but losing them means losing a competitor that was willing to try new things, even when they didn't work.
In other words, despite its titanium, futuristic-veneer Apple Card does not afford you what nearly every other credit card does: a website accessible on desktop that gives you the flexibility to pay bills or see transactions from any device
the main reason why i love the "pho king" pun so much is that it helps non-viets with the correct pronunciation of pho, which is absolutely, 100% NOT "foe"
There is an extensive, hidden review-for-hire economy that persists in every corner of Amazon. And that economy is designed to evade Amazon's every attempt to thwart it.
this graphic 1) is very good 2) clearly shows the invisible/not obvious collection of data that happens alongside the visible/obvious user activity that is stored
The data is sold, and re-sold, and re-sold again, so much so that your carrier has no idea where your location data is ultimately ending up. But make no mistake: they are selling it in the first place, and they are responsible.
gmail's upcoming 'help me write' can compose replies for you, like this plea for a full refund.
won't be long until customer service responses are written entirely with AI, and we'll just be sending AI emails back and forth until infinity
45 years ago this week, my parents fled Vietnam, days before the fall of Saigon, along with thousands of others. My mom left two sisters behind and didn't see them again for over a decade. Here they are with their families before the war changed their lives.
I'm still learning new things about how review manipulation on Amazon works — like how paid reviewers can get cashback rewards from the Amazon credit card for bogus purchases (and lots of it):
NEW: a collab w/

The iPhone's passcode is much more than a screen unlock. It's powerful. That's why thieves are stealing iPhones and their passcodes to drain bank accounts, and lock victims out of their Apple IDs. Here's how:
Ring says, repeatedly, its devices don't use face recognition tech — and yet, it is very clearly working on it, which raises questions as to why it isn't forthcoming with its customers.
@RMac18
and I have the receipts.
"New cyclists: Your sock height is fine ... Experienced cyclists: Do not screw this up by making cycling this exclusive, obnoxious sport with your dumb rules."

matter = interoperability between devices + platforms. you're no longer confined to HomeKit or SmartThings, etc.
thread = networking tech that allows smart devices to communicate w/o internet
homepod can work w/ matter devices. on top of that, it's a hub for thread devices.
There's a hidden ecosystem of trackers inside of your phone's apps that's collecting a ton of data about you. What's surprising, though, is how easy it is for apps to sell that data (and get away with it)
Some personal news: I'm a YouTuber now.

🆕 After nearly 10 years, my husband Will finally joined the family iMessage chat from his Pixel phone, using
@onbeeper

reddit's systems were hacked via sms hijacking (which, sigh), an increasingly common (and effective) practice used to bypass two-factor authentication.
evergreen twete: sms is easy/simple, which makes it a good option for a lot of people! but here's why authenticator apps (like google authenticator or authy) + security keys (like yubikey) are superior, as noted by
@jessysaurusrex
after typing "sit on," gboard suggests "my face" on android (mostly google pixel). after reaching out to google for comment, a spox said the phrase is being removed from word suggestions
