One of the best days I've had on our intensive care unit was when I had the privilege to work with our fab cleaner Phyllis. Without her our unit would be shut. Everyone has a unique skill, gift and passion
@TessaRDavis
One of my first Paeds consultants Malcolm Donaldson, husband of Julia (Gruffalo?), said to me:
Neil, firstly try observation. If that doesn’t work try observation and if your back’s really against the wall then try…observation. The answer’s there right in front of you.

Did a 12 hour
@PICU_Scot
nursing shift yesterday - well nearly, I was a wee bit late…
A real privilege to work with such superstars.
Thank you to all nurses. You are the glue of every healthcare organisation. The eyes, the ears, the advocates of every patient.
I’ve been overwhelmed today by people’s kindness and generosity. The weather has attempted to grind things to a halt but NHS staff and the public are having none of it. Lifts, rota swaps, home baking. It could be like this all the time...

How can leaders foster a work environment where people feel safe to speak up, share new ideas and work in innovative ways? Amy Edmonson explains why psychological safety at work is so important and what leaders can do to create it:
@docib
It’s a huge issue. We only select from the top 1%, and for academic achievement rather than attitude and aptitude.
Some of the best doctors I know are nurses.
Last time I was in this hall was for a Metallica concert. Slightly different experience today

Both absolutely amazing, left me slack jawed and the former - deaf for a week.

Fab PICU nurse: ‘You’ve got 1:10000 and 1:100000 (magic) adrenaline’.
Me: ‘The writing’s a bit wee for me, not sure I can read it in a hurry’
Fab PICU nurse: ‘We know, that’s why the label is vertical for 1:10000, horizontal for 1:100000, ta da!’
Brilliant.
@HorsleyCarl
Commendable but aiming for zero and being preoccupied with failure are the very things that have created constraint in a complex system. Leads to burnout, lack of flexibility and poor system performance. We should be enhancing system adaptability

This applies to everyone in healthcare, not just surgeons. The effect on people’s psychological safety and ultimately the patient is increasingly clear.

I’m assuming the owners of all these private jets currently flying over my house have organised some sort of altruistic lift-share scheme to help out those with no transport whilst minimising their carbon footprint?

Delighted with the therapeutic effects of the Jura sun this weekend. My West of Scotland vitamin D levels have risen from ‘Almost certainly fatal’ to ‘Critical’.

No mention of vents, lines or drugs rather they told of kindness, compassion, openness and honesty.

The question for me would be: ‘Why is your routine interaction with this piece equipment normally successful despite the varying conditions of work?’
So, why does your work normally work? Why is it usual for nothing to happen?
This type of thinking provides some life balance.
I’ve come across a new term: ‘Kintsugi’
Fixing cracked pottery with a gold, silver, or platinum lacquer. When put back together the whole piece looks beautiful as ever. It doesn’t hide the cracks, it owns its broken history.

Overall oversight of a patient who's stay has been identified as potentially long term. Day to day stuff done by duty general consultant.
Neither role seems to allow you to choose any colour...
