When we went back to the Brownsville Port of Entry late this morning, a few people we had seen last night were gone. CBP agents had let them through, we were told. But not everyone -- so some had to sleep on the bridge amid the wind & rain. No idea what their reasoning is.
NEW: Per media conference by HHS and DHS officials, 4 children under 5 have so far been reunified with their parents (out of a total of around 100 who are supposed to be reunified today.)
How does the need to "try new formats, take bolder risks, and use new tools to reach new audiences" translate into laying off reporters who cover demographics, elections, and criminal justice????
Texas Tribune laid off staff today, citing changes in the industry and an unsteady economy. Here's the note CEO Sonal Shah sent to the publication's employees this afternoon.
Wow. Not only have Trib leaders failed to answer basic questions about why they suddenly had to lay off 10% of the staff after a rapid expansion ... now they've hired a pricey PR firm to help with media inquiries about the debacle.
Frustration over a lack of transparency has been amplified by the
@TexasTribune

I’m at the Brownsville port of entry today. About 15 people are camped out on the bridge, saying that they are seeking asylum and being told to “wait.” Most have slept here for the last two nights or longer.

@texasmonthly
@TexasTribune
, my story of how the unchecked power of TX judges has crippled the state’s indigent defense system, told through the eyes of poor defendants and attorneys:
This ignores some key questions. How can leadership justify eliminating the demographics & criminal justice beats specifically? How can they have expanded so much in recent years without being prepared to pay for it? Who will be held to account for that?
I could go on. But I'll just leave y'all with this thought from Jeff, who I feel so lucky to have known even for a short time: “The truth is that if I stand for anything it's that a small-town guy with an education from a state school can do something like this." 11/11
Getting some ?s abt why families don’t turn back. 1 mom from Honduras told us gang members threatened to kill her 3-yo son if she didn’t sell drugs for them. Another man from Guatemala told us he was getting death threats from gangs. Said he feels safer camped out on the bridge.
This correction needs a correction. Curry is not a spice, and I'm not sure describing curry as a "type of stew" is correct either. cc:

I've confirmed w/ LA County spokesman Mike Sanchez that he did tell reporters yesterday that 20% of voting machines were down, but he says this was just a rough guess he gave reporters when they asked him to estimate. They have no idea how many machines were down or why.

Before law school, Jeff was active in the socialist and civil rights movements. In 1978, he was arrested at a protest in Nashville, TN. He spent 17 days in jail, representing himself at trial and getting acquitted on a directed verdict from the judge -- before law school. 3/x
@mffisher
Thank you for removing your tweet, but I’d also like to note that your tweet was just plain inaccurate. The statement you pointed to never said the students decided “not to do student journalism.” How is inviting people to reach out an implication of that?
From an early age, Jeff reveled in being an outsider. He had to wear a leg brace as a young boy growing up in Amarillo, which ostracized him from other kids and led him to spend his days in the library. He also dealt with an abusive stepfather and hated authority ever sense. 2/x
Jeff did more than fight for the wrongfully-convicted. On his own dime, he studied 1000s of misdemeanor prosecutions around Amarillo & authored a much-cited report in 2015 that exposed the local govt for charging poor people with petty crimes and denying them lawyers. 10/x

An adult-only detention center in deep South Texas wound up keeping migrant children overnight and later held their parents in a bureaucratic limbo.
