A lot of folks ask how I use color. A lot of it is very simple!
Two fun things I use are “zig-zag” and “reverse” hue shifts. In zig-zag ramps, every other swatch is from an adjacent hue.
In reverse ramps, light colors shift towards purple, darks towards gold.

“Ps, poor people are happier that way. We didn’t ask any of them, but it helps us sleep at night, so we’re pretty sure it’s true.”
Hi
#VisibleWomen
, I’m Naomi.
For years I didn’t think I deserved to be visible, let alone a woman. I’m still kinda convincing myself.
But I’m here now, making chunky crunchy

Mostly trees, sometimes girls, sometimes cats, sometimes girls in trees, sometimes catgirls.
Sometimes you realize halfway through
#colorblocking
that "refinement" isn't what a piece needs.
I can't call this

so let's go with

-- do people use that word anymore?

I had someone interviewing for an L4/L5 position tell me Copilot had 10x’d his output.
“Nice!” I say, making small talk, “I don’t really use it, but I’ve heard cool things!”
We start the coding exercise — they can BARLEY declare a variable.
The AI generation is gonna STRUGGLE.
I am a simple millennial:
If there's no pink, what's the freaking point?
(Flowers won't appear in every map or season but they will add some nice variety where the appear).
The problem persists as we add colors..
As long as there are roughly regular "stripes", the effect only gets worse the more you work it (which is DEVASTATING for beginners!)
Some folks suggested dithering. This doesn't SOLVE the issue, but it points in a promising direction...
Wow, LOT of people liked my color post! Even if they didn’t know wtf I talking about 😅
So, some terms!
A “palette” as most of you know is just a collection of colors. A “ramp” is a few of those colors lined up, often light-to-dark. Here are 2 ramps from popular palette “DB32”:

is hard, and delicate work with consistent AA and selective outlining is wayyyyy harder that the blocky, painterly stuff I’ve been doing the last few years.
How did anyone in the Deviantart doll scene survive the early 2000’s without wrist surgery
Daily reminder that en eff tees and everything associated with them are antagonistic to working artists and individual expression.
The community is a cesspool of grifters and thieves with a few artists who have been fucked hard enough by capitalism to shrug the above for a buck.
So. I tweeted refusing to do NFTs, because *I* believe crypto is a grift and bad for the environment. My choice. Impacting nobody else.

Then a CryptoCobain put me on blast to 400k followers. Full day of dogpiles and harassment. This is a bad look.
Many tutorials will teach to shift darks to violet, brights to yellow, dividing the canvas into warm light and cool shadow.
This is good advice, but it’s also good to experiment. Breaking those can be rewarding, especially when working with organic and/or translucent materials.
It's fun doing technical art for Ember Hearts to match low-color, hand-animated sprites.
Target spinners are angle gradients, but with carefully tuned framerate and color steps to look like they COULD BE hand drawn.
They're not even perfectly round, because "perfect" is a tell!

is trending once again, so it's time for something a little different than my usual updates..here are some throwback

(I tried to find the least-related works I could..yet somehow they all kinda qualified as

by accident?)
Whoever slept on this palette (COR1.5 by Cröwley) was missing a real gem - great vibes here, lovely balance of warmth with the greenish dark tone..very late 60’s!

Today is the

My old animation professor got his first animation gig thus:
He was working at a copy center and making a delivery to a studio
On his way out, he saw one of the cameras was off kilter so he righted it
Someone hands him some tweens to do and yells at him to “get back to work!!”
Finished rewriting Ember Hearts "Action Templates" for in a way that allows any character (player or mob) to safely (w/o crashing) use any skill in the game.
This feels really, REALLY good for balance, composition and code reuse!
(Also a prereq for Rhoxie's Mimic Magic 🤡✨)
I enjoy using hard

brushes for

because I feel like they force an economy of design which is really beneficial.
It’s not that detail isn’t achievable, but you have to really work for it. And because the palettes are small, it’s easy to do color variants.
2009 vs 2019
I don’t have the same dramatic change in skill level as others. Some may even prefer the older work.
However, I feel I’m able to do much more with much less these days, with greater confidence and clearer intention.
