And again, it is Ronaldo who bails out Portugal.
The main man, who has not had a good match, does all that Portugal need him to do now. Score. Until someone else is routinely doing that for us, he belongs.
Not sure who needs to hear this *cough cough British journalists* but no player who scores 800+ goals/wins 5 Ballon d’Ors will ever be forgotten.
Long after he’s left the game, fans will respect his legacy no matter how furiously you write about him in the present.
Enjoy! 😎
Let’s say, theoretically of course, a certain striker moved to a well-known EPL club, and finished in the top-5 in goals scored, but his club finished 6th. Was his individual season a success? Now pretend this player is not Cristiano Ronaldo, does that change the answer? 🤔
Bruno Fernandes comparison w/Joao Moutinho. I want to point out a few things. 95% passing & lost possession only FOUR times. Need a guy like him when Bruno loses the ball 22 times, lol! Loved Bruno's contributions last night, but do not forget Moutinho. An unsung gem, as always.
What’s all the “see how CR7 ruins coaches careers” bs I keep seeing today? Seriously, where is the respect for this guy? 2 goals shy of 800 in his career & ppl acting like he’s some kind of huckster convincing poor hapless managers to trust his goalscoring prowess. Simply unreal.
This after 2 decades of no player or manager ever having anything negative to say about Ronaldo’s standards. This clown is talking about the same guy that used to run with weights on his body when at SCP. No choice at RM? He scored 450 goals for them. That’s a very high standard.
❌ “Ronaldo never got a choice about his standards under Sir Alex.”
❌ “He didn’t get much choice about standards at Real or Juve.”
😡 “We may have seen a glimpse of his real character at
#MUFC
now.”
Simon Jordan isn’t sure Ronaldo is the ‘role model’ people think he is.
I think most reasonable Portugal supporters know this, but I have to make these two comments anyway: 1) Ronaldo has to start these Euros and 2) Portugal WILL be hurting when he retires, all the other talent we have produced notwithstanding
Y’all that Pahlhinha run… tackled two players including Kante, then he NUTMEGS one of the best midfielders in the tournament and keeps right on going. I was on my feet watching. What a savage.
Lol, don’t you all love these random journalists coming out of the woodwork to drop the latest insufferable take on Portugal, what’s wrong with them, some trash about Ronaldo, etc?
It’s laughable how little these people know about our team, players, and tactics. 🤣
After watching Brazil lose, let me add - and I cannot stress this enough - Portugal MUST NOT go to PKs tomorrow. We have to put Morocco away. Must be absolutely ruthless. Morocco have already survived PKs & will have an edge. I’d rather see us lose in normal time than PKs.
Well, there you have it. Portugal doing what they do best and Ronaldo in to save the day. Think that’s a great role for him. The energy changed when he came on. Liked him alongside Jota too. But again, the final ball from Mendes just devastating and indefensible.
So…. Ronaldo rounds third (900) and leans into a sprint for 1000 having scored in every match he’s played this season…. I’m dumbstruck.
He’s really going to do it, isn’t he?
Portugal are not better off without Ronaldo.
Portugal are not better off without Ronaldo.
Portugal are not better off without Ronaldo.
Portugal are not better off without Ronaldo.
Portugal are not better off without Ronaldo.
Argentina’s defeat is a reminder this is the World Cup and anything can happen. Hope Portugal go all in vs Ghana. Has to be ultimate commitment for 90 mins, not just until the first goal is scored.
Oh Portugal, how broken my heart is tonight💔
End of 🇵🇹’s tournament but it feels like so much more; surely the last we ever see of Cristiano and Pepe.
Even the most legendary must end their careers & I mourn it had to be this way.
Heading offline to grieve, love you guys 👍
Honestly, are Portugal not the most disrespected team in international football? So many underachieving nations out there but it's Portugal who are always subjected to such condemning and irreverent analysis.
Gonna be hard to let Pepe walk away from the Seleção someday. Not as consistent as he once was, but I feel like he's one of the best defenders I've ever seen play, no joke. Such a smart, physical, and just plain effective defender.
You know, in one sense I’m not certain how CR7’s time in Saudi compares w/what other greats have done. But as long as I’ve watched football I can’t remember another 39 yr old doing it like he does. Say what you will, it’s a sight to see & I’m thankful I got to witness his career.
I’ll just say what everyone’s thinking: that 4-4-2 w/Félix roaming free was 🔥. We need a stronger DM, ie Pahlinha, but add Pepe and Cristiano back into this formation and I see a lot of potential. Way more than a 4-3-3. Question is, how can we get Leão firing at this tournament?
Lots of people chatter about Cristiano‘s tap-ins, but why is it that he’s so frequently unmarked mere meters from goal? It’s no accident. His awareness and ability to exploit space behind the defensive line is unmatched.
856 and counting…
Força Cristiano!
Força Seleção!
Have to gush about Ronaldo for a moment: seeing him as a point man, almost supervising his team as they string together 30 passes prior to his goal: he’s giving EXACTLY what Portugal need at this stage of his career, just as he has during every other stage.
I’m still struggling to put into coherent words what I think of Portugal’s performance… but I will say this, I’m glad Ronaldo missed that PK and score twice from open play instead. No room for twitter-babies to cry about the way the record was broken.
That was as desperate a match as any I can remember seeing in a long time. Just brutal.
Long live Diogo Costa on a night when Pepe and CR7 both nearly cost Portugal everything.
And I still love them. 🥹
I've seen matches on multiple continents. I've seen Messi, Brazil, Cristiano on many other occasions for club/country. Never have I seen a player devastate a very good nat'l team like Ronaldo did in Kharkiv. Unplayable. This team very unlucky not to win the whole tournament IMO.
Said it before, I'll say it again. For me this is Ronaldo's greatest ever individual performance for Portugal, even surpassing the Sweden hat-trick game. Remember this was must-win, and Portugal were down a goal early.
@nathanmotz
was there
This is a good take on the Ronaldo situation. Should CR7 walk out on his team? No. But should he even be at the club if Ten Hag had no intention to play him in meaningful games? Also no. Should’ve let him walk. No player w/the career he’s had would be content in this scenario.
If Spain couldn't beat us playing the way they did, how is any other team going to do it? Other teams have different weapons, but no team will be able to put us through the possession-dominant ringer like that for 90 mins. I'm very confident going forward, vamos!!!!
Back in October, we first heard stat-pounding football elites tell us they knew better than everyone else about how Cristiano Ronaldo was Manchester United’s problem.
I’m starting to think this whole season has systematically disproven that, today’s match just 1 more example.
Ronaldo's chief role seems to be just screaming at his teammates for not passing him the ball. Doesn't matter where he is, where they are, whether Portugal score without his involvement or whether he actually does anything when he does get the ball.
Never have I enjoyed watching football more than when I'm watching a Ronaldo-led team, especially Ronaldo's Portugal. Difficult to describe how much I've savored this epoch & my limited opportunities to document some of his exploits for posterity. Happy birthday
@Cristiano
!
Note to Fernando Santos - we get that Danilo is your third CB, now who is your fourth? Remember you needed four good CBs to win Euro 2016.
Sincerely,
Seleção supporters everywhere
My analysis of what pundits & football intellectuals recently told us about CR7. No matter how many goals he scores, bad stats interpretation provides near-limitless potential to criticize him (& other footballers). It's worth taking a closer look, enjoy!
Fernando Santos and Portugal finally part ways & it’s difficult to fit the right words to this moment. It’s far past too late yet still sad to see him go. I hope time will eventually blot out the missed opportunities and we’ll remember the special times and be better off for it.
I was today-years-old when it dawned on me that Cristiano Ronaldo is in the Top Five all-time in assists.
Remarkable what this self-absorbed penalty merchant has done in his career. 🤡
Well, thankfully events conspired such that 🇵🇹 still win the group but I am not at all pleased w/this game’s management. Go up inside 5mins in the match and can’t build from there, leaving the door open for the opposition to walk right in and take the result.
I hate that. 😤
Bruno Alves.
Hate to see another in this 🇵🇹 generation hang up the boots. Remember the time he king fu kicked Harry Kane in the face & got sent off very early in the 1st half? LOL. But he was great alongside Pepe & even scored some crucial goals. We’ll all miss you, Bruno.👏
A very, very special dia da Seleção! Just so excited and anxious.
We have such a special group of players, can we make it count? It all begins today!!!
🇵🇹🦃🇵🇹🦃🇵🇹🦃🇵🇹🦃🇵🇹🦃🇵🇹🦃
One of the more inspiring things about Ronaldo is his pitiless indifference to criticism. Before the match, genuine media outlets insisting he should be benched…. then he scores a goal like that. Not giving one single efffffff about pressing. Wish I had half his confidence. 💪
Wow, heart-attack Seleção at its worst. The 2010 WC squad configuration was one of my least favorite. Queiroz trying everything he could: common sense gone, Coentrão a winger, Pepe a DM, Danny a winger (was a great No.10), CR7 the lone striker, no Nani, no Moutinho. 😰🫣
To my fellow Portugeezers - our beloved Seleção may lose or may blow 🇸🇮 out, either way that’s football. If we play our best, there’s nothing they can do. We don’t play our best, well, “the ball is round” and all that sort of thing.
Martinez, over to you, don’t let us down!
Ronaldo’s first goal especially good, notice if you will how little separation his step-over gains him compared to say 5-10 years ago yet he STILL is able to uncork that shot on his weak foot with almost zero space to execute… it’s brilliant
CR7 has aged well bc he's focused his game on the action that has the highest probability of yielding goals: shots on target. The more he shoots, the more hit the target, the more goals, the more wins; it's rational, lethal, & why he's a serial winner. Dribbling isn't everything.
Will never forget this legend. I will so cherish the memories. His ferocity & intelligence, his sheer will to win. How he made others better. His energy, esp near the end of a match.
Pepe, you epitomize so much of what I love about football. God bless you in retirement. 🇵🇹❤️🙏
That last goal from Portugal.....don't think it's going to be talked about enough bc it's Portugal, but it was arguably the most creative goal at this Euros so far. Not saying it was the best goal, but wonderfully intricate passing and a great Ronaldo finish to boot!
Well, it was ugly...and dramatic, and fortuitous. But we're through and I have no idea how we're going to win against N. Macedonia(!!!) in four days time, but we're through!
🇵🇹🇵🇹🇵🇹🇵🇹🇵🇹🇵🇹🇵🇹🇵🇹🇵🇹🇵🇹🇵🇹🇵🇹🇵🇹🇵🇹🇵🇹🇵🇹🇵🇹🇵🇹🇵🇹
Just want to say this ref has been very poor. How is that not red for a lunging two-footed challenge from behind on Nuno Mendes? Seriously, not even a yellow? Bizarre.
Filthy. This guy got real good, real fast. A season or two ago his career seemed like it was going to stall....now, well, he's easily among the top RBs in football
I'm reminded of a line from
@Marcotti
's Portugal-Spain preview in which he said that Ronaldo hasn't always scored many goals at the WC but that he'll "eventually regress to the mean." Ah the power of statistical truth. Here's to Ronaldo regressing to his superhuman mean.
Just like at Euro 2016 with the Portuguese football team, the FUTSAL squad lost its best player to injury in the final....and WON! Congratulations to Portugal's Futsal squad for winning the Euros for the very first time by beating Spain for only the 2nd time in 27 meetings!
2006 WC semifinal, Portugal v France. That match goes differently, last remnant of Portugal’s Golden Generation + 21 yr old Cristiano goes to a WC final. Anything can happen in a final, would’ve loved to see Portugal v Italy.
🇬🇪 2-0 🇵🇹 and Martinez has done it again! Mercifully it doesn't change our group fate. Still, these strange lineups result in disjointed, ineffective football. It's tedious, slow & largely harmless to the opponent. Few big chances created, little confidence defensively. 👎
Cristiano Ronaldo gets his swansong. You love to see it! 🇵🇹
Signing off for now, but already looking forward to seeing this squad in action again for the UNL matches this summer!
So here’s the deal w/the Ronaldo PK. Was it a PK? Such an ignorant question: it was bc the ref said it was.
Was it lucky? Yes, and as I’ve said b4 - and I cannot emphasize this enough - major tournament success depends a great deal on luck. Things went our way tonight.
Lol, sheer, rugged genius. Lad's run roughshod over half the defense before setting up Rafa. Bull-in-a-China- cabinet type stuff, and it's exactly what we needed.💪
Last comment for 2022 b4 the Portuguese wine sets in: be happy for Cristiano.
He slew Europe for 2 decades. Might be hard to hear, but he doesn’t owe SCP. Was extraordinary theatre, but his career is winding down & he’s prep’ing for life after football.
Celebrate & remember!
Y’all… I am gonna miss Cristiano.
Two sensational goals tonight. For any player, regardless of age to hit two like he has tonight, with his “weak” foot… it’s remarkable. 🤯
Interesting stat I ran across today....Ronaldo
#10
on last season's Serie A list for - get this - most successful dribbles. Ahead of Chiesa & Lukaku even though # of attempted dribbles roughly the same. Not too bad for an old guy who supposedly doesn't know how to dribble. 🙃
You know who was a really good player? Miguel, Portugal’s RB at Euro 2004, WC 2006. Easy to forget that now bc Portugal have an abundance of quality RBs. Miguel was smart, a great dribbler, and very hard-working. Combined well with anyone on his side of the pitch.
Here again folks is Ronaldo “the problem” not helping his team by loafing around trying to score goals.
BTW I understand he doesn’t always do this. But he understands when he does and does not need to press.
Here’s Ronaldo - the penalty box merchant - tracking back inside his own half in the last minute of play, to win a loose ball and instigate the second goal.
Such a tactical headache, this guy
At last night’s 🇵🇹 x 🇸🇰…CR7 had more touches than Leão & Ramos, more shots, better pass completion + comparable number of dribbles, aerials won & key passes, aside from his 2 goals.
As we prep our young fwds for the immense task of replacing him, let’s enjoy how well CR7 did.
Aside from the goal, we’ve been decent in defense, but w/out CR7 we’re not generating shots on target. This slow build up w/longer periods of possession isn’t our game. Need Bernardo in ASAP.
Portugal: 21 total attempts
Croatia: 4 total attempts
Without our best player, as dominant a performance as I've witnessed in a good long while. Possibly the most scintillating Fernando Santos-era performance?
Some thoughts after last night, 🇵🇹 x 🇹🇷: needed Pepe & Cancelo badly. I’ve been a long time supporter of Bruno Fernandes & still think he might play better w/different tactics but for now he needs to sit; game just passes him by. Dalot/Guerreiro weren’t great either vs the press.
🧵Portugal vs North Macedonia…let’s all get mentally ready for a very tough match. But I want to tell the whole story. There is some important perspective about our opponent which has not been shared very often, if at all.
A PSA for all my Portugal supporters…
This lineup is Santos doing what we’ve all wanted so if it doesn’t work out just remember that we’ve all been wanting a change in tactics. And this is definitely it.
But the game rewards bravery and punishes cowardice, vamos!
Few more thoughts...I was super impressed by Danilo these last 2 matches. He was tough & hard-working, but his passes were smart and crisp. He didn't overdo it and was not caught out of position that I can remember. Really good to see this in light of William's injury struggles.
Just read an amusing article from 2009 entitled - "Portugal will never win a major tournament: the three reasons why." Interesting to look back through time and see what people thought about the Seleção. Boy were they wrong too! At the time though, things were quite different.
Getting concerned Santos is gonna play for a draw vs Uruguay. Also concerned how exposed we are whenever we show any attacking intent. Our defense was very poor in 1v1 duels against Ghana. Tough problem to sort out.
Cristiano scoring two goals today which few could hit, especially the second.
Gonçalo Ramos, Félix, Jota, Leão need to elevate their game if they want a better chance of starting for the Seleção.
CR7 so relentless a force even now. How can you drop him?
Dias and Costa both to blame for that goal… but our defending has been very lax, especially on set pieces. Lotta of free headers and teams who surrender goals like we did that half rarely progress. Has to change.
Less than an hour separates us from the start of the world Cup. Such a strange time. Thanksgiving right around the corner. Snow on the ground here as the games kick off in the desert.
May the best team win, and may that team be Portugal! 🇵🇹💪
