Mom: “Abdul Mu’izz, please do not smile for the passport photo”
Me: “ok”
Also me: *smiles* (pretends to be posing for a Korean high school drama series)
“Congratulations Dr. Mu’izz” — words from the examiners after passing the phd viva.
hi. i haven’t been on twitter because i was busy finishing my phd. but here’s a photo of me and my (digitized) thesis. i’m super grateful to everyone who’s supported me throughout this journey.
Hi everyone! It’s been a while since I posted. I’ve been focusing on living more offline and therefore not really active on social media as much. But I wanted to share that I graduated with a PhD from NUS! It was quite euphoric to see how my parents were super happy & proud 😀
Very happy to hear that our Sultan is paying and reimbursing all return flight tickets for students studying overseas! We couldn’t have asked for a better ruler. Alhamdullilah.
THREAD: Ever heard of Muslim female rulers in the Malay world? Probably not. Somehow we always talk about Sultans and Rajas, but we rarely talk about Sultanahs and Ratus. When I first heard of the word ‘Sultanah’ I was quite puzzled because I had no idea that they existed.
Me: “Your Majesty, please can I take a selfie with you”
*clicks the shutter button three times* *it doesn’t work*
Me: “omg it’s not working 😭😭😭” and then Sultan laughed... then it worked... I think my phone just wanted to hear Sultan’s cosmic laughter
It was a difficult decision whether to accept the fellowship during this pandemic. But long story short, I did accept it, moved to the US about a week ago and now, Alhamdullilah, I’m a Yale fellow.
So for my birthday, I wanted to get new shirts but I couldn’t find patterns that I liked in stores. Then, my best friend brought me to a Kedai Kain and gifted me to choose the fabric and design them myself! And for now... I can claim that I’m the only one who own these shirts 🌺
Here are some photo with Prince Mateen and friends! I definitely had fun at my last Junjung Ziarah as a student— it just made it official that my favorite hairstyle is the comma fringe.
Bruneians, do please read this! And I will be more than happy to provide a thread based on the Bruneian perspective to why we did not join the federation of Malaysia in 1963. I’ve also been working on this for the past two years for my PhD thesis to understand the present.
Okay. Bismillah
Soalan yang ditanya, perspective Malaysia perihal keengganan Brunei menyertai Persekutuan 1963.
Jawapan ringkasnya, Brunei "menolak" untuk menyertai Malaysia kerana Sultan Omar mahu melindungi Brunei dari:
1. Sistem Politik
2. Sistem Kewangan

Long story short, I got invited to a Malaysian open house in Connecticut! These aunties want to adopt me jadi anak angkat and now… I have 4 foster moms in Connecticut. (It also didn’t help that they thought I was 18-19).
Definitely happy to experience Malay culture in the US.
So I worked with 4 photographers last week and ended up with different types of shots! Tbh I just follow their directions and instructions... most of the time I was puzzled but definitely had fun!

Small Thread: The Temburong Bridge will be the longest bridge ever built in Southeast Asia— about 30 km/19 mile. While we tend to see the bridge as a symbol of development, it is also however more than that. (Photo Credits:

British lecturer: “what have you been up to?”
Me: “nothing much... just reading on the legacy of British colonialism in Southeast Asia and how they messed us up”
My jokes with my British friends have become a bit too much:
Me: “Did you manage to book a table?”
Him: “No, unfortunately, I couldn’t”
Also me: “Just colonize a table, given your history, I’m pretty sure you’re pretty good at it by now."
Been busy trying to have a complete draft of my PhD dissertation by the end of the year! But this happened recently, I presented parts of my dissertation for a seminar at UPenn. (It was the also the first time that I got sponsored for everything!?)
I'll chime in from an academic perspective, the least I could do. The issue of racism in
#Brunei
is definitely deeply-rooted because it is something that we don't talk about and I have always argued that it is because of a massive "colonial hangover." Brunei DOES NOT talk about-
My best friend and I were trying to find a praying place yesterday and just couldn’t find any secluded place. We ended up going to a clothing store, pretending to try clothes at the fitting room— when in actuality, we were just praying inside the fitting room. 🤲🏻🤷🏻♂️
Long story short. I had an ‘interesting’ encounter last night where the waitress insisted that I should try their cake as it is on the house. I politely said no several times as I am full and then she attempted to flirtatiously “suap” the cake to my mouth and I was uncomfortable.
Still alive but tired— been busy with conducting research interviews, writing memos for my supervisors and working out with my trainer!!! (also minum bubble tea without sugar tiap hari)
I was randomly talking to an older woman yesterday and she told me about what her father used to always tell her:
“Never go back a place that once made you happy.”
Assalamualaikum and annyeong. I’m back after avoiding Twitter (and other social media platforms) for the past few weeks. There was too much public shaming going on and it was rather suffocating— always remember that life is full of possibiliteas with a bowl hair cut 🙇🏻♂️
I was otw to Kew Gardens & this 17 year-old British girl just tapped me on the shoulder, nervously wanting to get to know me! She told me she’s really interested until I told her that I’m almost a decade older than her (which blew her mind cause she thought we were the same age).
I initially tweeted this because of my facial expression without realizing that my dimples became the main focus— it’s not something I think about consciously because it’s just always there for me. Thank you for all the kinda words really! And yes, you guys can poke it 😂
Academic Thread: "Traditionalism and the Ascendancy of the Malay Ruling Class in Colonial Malaya" by Donna J. Amoroso –– This work argues that the British colonial power utilised and reinvented the tradition of the Malay ruling class to secure its economic & political needs.
