Wekesa actually blocked me. I only asked why he was telling his story of recent affluence with emphasis on past poverty. The biggest problem that Amin-era kids (Ugandans born between 1970 and 1980) face is just that. They are big men (and women) with fragile egos. Thread . .

You pay a Ugandan 500k, they will only afford rent in Nansana or Mukono. On a rainy day when Banda or Lubigi is flooded and roads cut off, they will be late. But you pay an India millions, enough to rent at a mall in town. This doesn’t mean the Ugandan is lazy

It was day six in country they knew little about. A country, they hoped to just cross through to their dream destination. It was also day 11 of their trip that was earlier scheduled for 14 days.

They arrived in Kenya and were assigned a Zimbabwean guide. They had planned to spend 8 of their 14 days trip in Kenya, then the other 6 would be split between Uganda and Rwanda. Their guide instead convinced them to leave Kenya for Uganda on the 5th day.

Just interacted with a 94 year old truck driver. With barely any tooth left in his mouth, Abdi tells me he has fathered 77 children. He is a World War II veteran, speaks 11 languages and has been to over 40 countries in the world. His youngest child will make 4years next month

At the end of their trip, they will have spent 10 days in Uganda, 7 in Kenya and 4 in Rwanda. I was curious on why they would spend longer time in Uganda but Uganda is not their preferred point of first entry. So I had a chat with some of them about their experience.

My father had only graduated two years earlier, had just wedded his lover (my mum) and was set for a career in medical practice. Rwakasisi not only dismissed him but also tore his academic documents rendering him unemployable.
