My new album Skydancers is now available. It has garnered the best reviews imaginable, and I am deeply touched by people’s responses. I would love for you to hear it.

I would like to thank the staff at The Northern General Hospital for looking me so well today when I had a very painful kidney stone experience. The NHS deserves our support, it’s brilliant.
There is nothing I can say that expresses the importance of Norma Waterson and her family in my musical and personal life over the last 50 plus years. This poster is from my late teens and it remains one of my proudest possessions. We have lost so much. ❤️
My lovely eldest brother just had a bladder cancer removed under the NHS. The surgeon was from Egypt, two nurses from the Philippines and another from Mauritius. He was crying at how caring they were.
My Father in Law Professor Roy Bailey MBE (returned) died today aged 83. He was a beautiful singer and an unparalleled performer and never ceased to be a protest singer.
I am delighted to have been invited by our fantastic NHS to have my first vaccination on Monday. I cannot express sufficiently how important and wonderful the NHS is. We must NEVER let it go.
My beautiful family are asleep with 20 mins to go until midnight. I want with all my heart for all the people in the world to wake up filled with love and compassion, common sense and just enough fear to have the strength to save the world.
When we moved into this house 13 years my brother Geoff gave me an Alder Buckthorn in a pot because it’s the food plant of Brimstone butterflies. I just watched a female Brimstone lay her eggs on it. Lovely.
I changed a lot of strings today because tomorrow I start recording the official bits of my next Album. It will include a lot of outdoor stuff from the last 5 months and songs I’ve been arranging and revisiting. The owls are calling as ever tonight, it’s getting cool. Goodnight.
I’m home after playing two shows to real people. It was our 16th wedding anniversary. Kit has put up with me being pre and post minstrel for 16 years. I am the luckiest man I know. X
I drove home across Sheffield just where I live and a dog fox crossed the road in front of me. It was beautiful. It was as important as any living thing on the planet.
Heidi, who upstaged me on my latest album left us today. She was a fearless creature, ruled the dog, ruled the area and avoided traffic like a superhero. She had lymphoma. She was our pal. I could wreck things right now.
Is social media a pointless outlet for our righteous fury and indignation without which we would be on the streets fighting what is clearly a racist, fascist, class driven coup? I am asking for the future of our society and indeed our world?
I am flying to Belgium today to do 2 gigs there and one in Netherlands on Sunday. I shall be apologising for recent events and praying that visits like this will continue....
I’m absolutely delighted to announce that my new album, ‘Rooted,’ will be released on
@TopicRecords
on Aug 30th in 2CD, vinyl and digital formats. You can pre-order it now here :
I’m in Belgium and staying with friends. They happen to have this guitar, made in 2007 by the late brilliant Dave Evans. One of the best guitars I have ever played.
I am in suspended animation due to the fact that on Friday May 21st I have an actual gig, playing to actual people in a room. Then another one on Sunday and another next Friday!
I was walking our little dog this morning at Castledyke and was watching a small Starling murmuration when a Starling flew over the stone wall next to me pursued by a hen Sparrowhawk. At head height the Sparrowhawk had to jink to miss me. It’s wings audibly ripped the air.
I walked through Endcliffe Park today at exactly the right time to see a Kingfisher dive, catch a fish, fly up to it’s perch and smack the fish on the branch and then fly away. Took about 4 excellent seconds.
Today’s surprise Moth of the day, a perfect Large Emerald spotted by Max this afternoon on the gazebo near the moth trap. It’s been 50 years since I saw one.
I am deeply saddened to hear of the passing of the lovely Barry Coope. Barry was a gentleman and a great singer and musician who cared about people. My heart goes out to Fi and Katy and Jo and all of his very many friends and associates.
Delighted to let you know about this & I hope you can join me this Sunday. There’s no minimum fee for this particular gig but in these troubled times your generosity is always very welcome & hugely appreciated. Donations can be made via PayPal. Thank you so much for yr support🙏🏻
The garden is heaving, Redwings, Blackbirds Dunnock Gold Green Bull and Chaffinches, Jackdaws Magpies Jays Blue Great and Coal tits Wood pigeons and collared doves. Lovely.
Happy Mothers’ Day everyone. Here’s me playing ‘Mother Love’, a tune I wrote for Kit when our child was born. The tab for it is available on my website and facing an uncertain time in terms of work, every little helps and is very gratefully received 🙏🏻
Very Best Wishes to all you all . Thanks to everyone who has supported us this year, particularly to Sandi and Jude who have made my social media world work so well.
I just came out of the Coop on Ecclesall Rd to find everyone in the car park transfixed by the sound of foxes shagging apparently on the roof of the launderette. Aaaah nature is Ace.
Thank you everyone who liked the Blue skies tweet. I’ll try and do a bit of music for everyone on a regular basis. Meanwhile the transcriptions are underway and also live footage and recordings. Stay well.
I mixed my guitar a little loud for this Sidmouth set so far! I miss the people who do the sound and the lights and sell the tickets and do all the good stuff that adds up to great gigs.
Today is
#frontroomfestival
from 2pm. I’ll be there performing along lots of friends and some excellent people who aren’t friends. Thank you to everyone who has donated to this and particular thanks to
@Bannmatt
of
@folkonfoot
who has created something amazing.
I’ve just been visiting my father in law at The Northern General in Sheffield. The staff are wonderful and the NHS deserves praise and support. The 2 parakeets flying over the car park were a bonus!
I have just seen and listened to
@daoiri
Daoiri Farrell and he is one of the finest singers I’ve ever heard, I think we’ll have to play some songs together.
Hard to know how to describe what a painful joy today’s Roy Bailey tribute
@towerseyfesti
was. Deeply moving filled with friends old and new. Thank you all.
