How can I help?
Count carbs, not calories!
If you knew you weren't going to wake up in the morning, would you be on here doing what you're doing?
God bless home Hospice. My wife died about half-past noon today. It wasn’t quick (she lived 9 days after she stopped drinking fluids), but it was a gentle and kind death. And for that I will be eternally grateful. Going dark from here now, there is a lot to process.
My mom died a year ago yesterday. I had to put my 12yo collie girl down this morning, she couldn't stand up - that was a sudden onset. My wife doesn't know what day it is, or remember that she ate a big breakfast just an hour before. I'm having a hard time of it today.
If you don't think the human body is remarkable … what other machine could you run for 45 years on the wrong fuel, ignore all the red lights on the dash, then change to the correct fuel and watch all the lights go out and discover the machine runs better than ever?
Ten years ago this week, I quit heavily drinking alcohol cold turkey and quit eating carbs. I weighed 256lb (I'm ~5'11'"), waist:hip was 1.16, and waist:height was 0.7, trigs were 393. I had gout, depression, hypertension, anxiety, asthma, zero energy, metabolic syndrome, 1/n
Experts: Stay out of the sun, especially between 10am and 2pm.
Best way to obtain adequate vitamin D (outside of the tropics): Sunlight, between 10am and 2pm.
🤔
Don't consume seed oils, no need for sunscreen, no need to fear the sun. Sorry Coppertone.
People that are pissed about the recent amyloid/Alzheimers hoax should take a look at the Ancel Keys/Procter & Gamble/AHA/cholesterol hypothesis hoax that is 50 years older.
Why am I on this site? Because I wish someone like me could have told me about a low-carb diet, getting off Rx drugs, real nutrition, and regaining health when I weighed 256 lbs and was very sick on DGA. If I can help one person find the strength to *TRY* low-carb, it's worth it.
It's amazing to me that 8 years of education + internship + residency + fellowship (in some cases) + countless interventions by pharma reps + speaking gratuities and other kickbacks … can all be defeated by a $250 shelf of books. Similar to (but not exclusive to) this one:
Avoided eggs (and fatty red meat and bacon) because they are "high in cholesterol" for so many years … nearly three decades … and I'm really pissed about it.
non-support from your healthcare professionals: YOU CAN DO IT. The most important thing you can do for your health is eat right — but you must determine what that is for you. It's not what most HCP/RDs/CDEs tell you. All the other stuff will follow.
So long, friends. 16/end
If you're just starting low-carb, please know that your "can't have" foods list will morph into your "don't want" list, sooner than you think.
Godspeed.

8 years low-carb today. 2922 days
8 years without carbs "for energy"

8 years restricting🤪… overweight, chronic diseases, and drugs!
8 years healthy
8 years not sick
8 years happy
8 years sustainable:
I stopped (hard) drinking cold turkey and went

6 YEARS AGO TODAY! 80lbs, 7Rx, a long list of chronic ills gone.
I am still working on the sustainability part.😉
Don't let anyone talk you out of healing yourself. Grateful to all who have helped me.
On Monday last I had a stroke. I lost my ability to type and spell on my computer. A four letter word would have three typos. I am a proficient touch typist and this was weird. I summoned my dogs off the bed and my speech was terribly slurred. I couldn't speak my address 1/11
The ADA exists to encourage you to become and remain diabetic. The ADA's sponsors (companies that sell processed food and medications to lower blood sugar) pay them for this, not to make/keep you well. The AHA works the same for CVD. The sooner you understand that, the better.
Pt: What is diabetes?
RD: A condition where your body can't handle excess carbohydrate.
Pt: What do I do about it?
RD: Eat 40-70g carbs 5-6 times a day including healthy whole grains, fruits, vegetables, low-fat dairy, lean meats, and desserts (in moderation😉).
Pt: OK
😬
My steer is ready at the processor. Tomorrow, I drive 11 miles and pick up an entire year's worth of food. How green is that? I'll pay a local business for the labor, and be thankful for the farmer, butcher, and that animal for 365 days. Every day.
Cholesterol is essential for life. Your liver makes cholesterol. If you eat less, the liver makes more. If you eat more, the liver makes less. Not eating *ANYTHING* b/c cholesterol is ridiculous. Anyone who says otherwise is wrong. Details:
I cut my wife's hair this afternoon. It's the first haircut I've ever done. Her hair is very thin from the radiation therapy, and was getting shaggy around the edges. She can't tolerate a trip to the hairdresser anymore, so I became her new stylist. One adapts as best as one can.
I mowed the lawn this morning without a shirt. This may not sound like a big deal to some, but the husky kid with a pot belly who wouldn't swim without a t-shirt, and the grown ass man who turned in his 52" waist shorts for 32" is kinda happy about this.
When cardiologist tells me "statins save lives" and "saturated fats clogs arteries" and "high LDL is bad" and "more whole grains less meat" is better … for ME … I need a way to say "I disagree. My research shows otherwise" without adding "You're so full of sh*t!"
Vegan to me: What would change your mind that eating vegan is good for the environment, best for the animals, and that it's a healthy diet?
Me: Evidence. What would convince you that veganism is none of those three?
Vegan: Nothing.
That's why I BLOCK 'em without engaging.
When I was a kid, I had cavities every dental visit. As an adult, I have several crowns & one implant. Gums used to bleed badly during brushing, and eating cold things hurt like hell.
After LC: No pain. No blood. No cavities. 6.5 years. I'll keep working on the sustainability.
A low-carb, adequate-protein, high-fat diet is your best defense against obesity, diabetes, Alzheimer's and a host of other chronic debilitating disease. But our sponsors don't want us to tell you.

Today marks my first 100 months (8y4m) on a low-carb diet🥳
Lost:
84 lbs
7 medications
obesity, overweight
chronic gout, joint pain, halitosis, CPAP, Candida
hypertensive crisis, depression, ETOH dependence
🎆LCHP-AF†
Still waiting for the unsustainability to kick in🙄
Isn't Santa Claus at high risk for COVID?

Stressful job

Lives at the north pole (low Vit D)
WW client: I lost 17 lbs in 3 months. Several times! For years! 🤪
Keto/LC: I lost 80 lbs, kept it off for several years, stopped 7 Rx drugs, reversed 3 chronic conditions, feel better, and enjoy life again!
WW client: I hear that's not sustainable.
Damn. I read the low-carb community's tweets, listen to them on podcasts, read their blogs, sometimes buy their books. They feel like friends. Mentors. I know them better than I know my neighbors. I know them better than much of my family. My life would be very different w/o 'em.
3000 days sober
3000 days low-carb
then 256 lbs, now 174 lbs
then 12 meds, 1 now
both are equally sustainable

, but spouse did for a time. I always ate fruits and whole grains, low-fat, and very minimal cheese and eggs b/c high fat/cholesterol. What this shitty nutritional advice did to us was and remains contemptible. That that advice is still happening is criminal.
I've been absent from here since my wife's death, but I wanted to pop in one last time to share the 10 year anniversary, and to let anyone who's earlier in their journey know YOU CAN DO IT. And to anyone still struggling to try low-carb given all the misinformation and 15/n
After just over 8 years on low-carb, I feel so much better. If the way I live now (eating mostly meat, eggs, butter, no PUFAs, therapeutic levels of whole carbs; getting sunlight, walking, no statins; no gout, depression, 80lbs lost) really does shorten my life, I'm OK with that.
I have some wild news for the "your genes make you fat" proponents: Cutting carbs out of your diet apparently changes your genes — in a couple weeks. Amazing!
My grandparents didn't eat "low carb." One smoked. They all lived a long time. So, what happened? For starters, they ate only 3 times a day, ate meat, whole foods, little UPF. Dessert was a treat (not breakfast), and their docs weren't trained by bigPharma, bigFood, and bigMed.
There are addiction treatment centers all over the country, maybe a thousand facilities? Yet, there are none dedicated to carbohydrates. Instead, carb dens on every corner: gas stations, doughnut shops, coffee ships, bodegas, vending machines, grocery stores … Get your

I'm going to miss a fair amount of low-carb, health, exercise, and nutrition posts for a while b/c I'm muting several of (my favorite) accounts that won't stop promulgating political or COVID conspiracy theory. If anything cool happens, please let me know.
19-f*ing-67. They. Knew. All. Along.
When I was 8, they KNEW.
When I was 25, they said low-fat best, Snackwells are heart healthy!
That makes me so angry … all to ↑food and pharma profit? This is a greater conspiracy and worse crime of collusion than big tobacco ever managed.
More than 90% of patients with atherosclerosis were found to have high triglycerides "from increased endogenous lipogenesis from carbohydrate."
Cutting carbs controlled it.
Known and published in 1967
On the ADA/AHA/DGA heart-healthy diet, I was 256lbs, had HTN, gout, sore joints, depression, alcohol-dependence, took 12 drugs, had "great" labs, and used a CPAP.
On the heart-attack low-carb diet, I'm 163 lbs, on 1 drug, no chronic disease, no ETOH or CPAP, and feel great.

You won't die if you stop eating carbs. You won't die if you fast for 18 hours. You won't die if you make changes to you diet to find out what works for you. If you feel like you're going to die, change what you're doing. 1/4
Primary Care Provider:
•We don't order CAC scores. You'd ask your cardiologist for that.
•We don't order CGMs. You'd ask your endocrinologist for that.
•We don't discuss diets. You'd see our nutritionist for that.

Everyone with an A1c above 5.8, or a FBG above 110, or who must see an RD for "blood sugar" MUST be a) informed of low carb diet options, and b) issued a continuous glucose monitor (CGM) along with all the BS handouts the dietitians provide. We'll see what works and what doesn't.
BREAKING: Intermittent Fasting doesn't help you lose weight!!
REALITY: An 8 hour eating window that ends close to bedtime isn't Intermittent Fasting …
BREAKING: Low carb diets don't help you ↓weight!!
REALITY: Eating 40% calories as carbs isn't ↓carb …
I'm so tired …
Anything in the grocery store marked *FORTIFIED* isn't food.
You don't have to fortify real food. Unless you ruin it first, then try to patch it up with synthetic chemicals.
Heinz Ketchup
"made only from sweet, juicy, red ripe tomatoes"
Ingredients include "high fructose corn syrup" AND "corn syrup" (if they didn't use both, the corn syrup would have to be listed BEFORE the tomatoes).
Cardiologist I see for BP meds, who told me you can't change LDL-C with diet (I did, by 106 points), no way you'll have a zero CAC score (I did), and your CRP will be through the roof (it was 1.10), is leaving the practice and moving back to Wisconsin. So, playtime is over.
At age 55, I was on 7 Rx. Now at age 60, on LCHF/ZC, I'm have zero Rx.
When diet is correct, medicine is unnecessary. When diet is incorrect, medicine is ineffective.
"People aged 65 - 69 take an average of 15 prescriptions a year, those 80 - 84 take 18 a year" ... EVERYONE I know that has gone

has reduced or eliminated their prescription drug intake. Do you see similar trend?
If you test 1000 people, 100 test positive, and 1 dies, you have a 10% infection rate, and a 1% mortality rate.
If there are 9000 *untested* people, because you don't have enough test kits, you really don't know shit.
Surfing the web as a low-carb eater has become a lot tougher—nearly every site interrupts my visit asking me to accept cookies. I don't want cookies!!!

My grandmother finished high school in 1904 and taught school until she married. My grandfather finished the 8th grade and painted houses. They lived long, and well. They ate lard, bacon, backyard eggs, toast, potatoes, roast beef, whole fat dairy (there was nothing else), 1/9
My wife turns 70 this fall. She's been low carb (eggs, and dairy, no red meat, very little fish) for a couple years. Never had a lipid panel. Until now:
TC: 203
Trig: 52
HDL: 72
LDL: 121
FBG: 108
A1c: 5.3
Vit D (25-H): 66
On her way to age 100, IMHO.
Nutritional ketosis ≠ Diabetic ketoacidosis
Ketosis is to ketoacidosis as …
cat is to catfish
ham is to hamster
ass is to assassin
car is to carpet
Nutritional ketosis is not dangerous! Still unsure? Present to the ED with "nutritional ketosis" and see what insurance pays.😝
I was 25 and the "experts" said follow the low-salt, low-fat, lean meat, 5-a-day, heart-healthy whole grains, DGA. They said avoid the sun. So I did all that. Then I was 45 and things started to break down. High trigs, low LDL, pre-hypertension, a bit of 1/9
I stopped running long ago. My GP said it's hard on your joints, and I want you to be able to get up out of a chair when your 80. Made sense.
Now, and a proper body weight, I'm running one mile for time as a measure of fitness.
Yesterday: 12:00 mile. 5.0 mph pace. First time.
I will trade you lower insulin, trigs, hsCRP, FBG, HOMA-IR, remnant cholesterol; higher HDL; 7 fewer Rx; better body composition, no gout, asthma, candida, CPAP, zero CAC, hypertensive crisis, depression, chronic hunger, and obesity … for higher LDL-C/ApoB.
Mom (age 94) isn't doing well on the low-fat, low-salt, high seed oil, high processed carbs diet meals-on-wheels delivers. I know they're trying to help. But mom cannot understand why she's getting worse.
Me: 🙈🙉🙊 I can't get through to her why.
💔to watch.
Looking at mid-year finances, I spend a good bit on pastured meats, local eggs, milk, cheese and Costco meat and cheese. Know what I don't spend much on anymore? Doctor and prescription drug copays, and vet bills.
I'm blocking/muting hostile, vapid, petty, trolling, vacuous, argumentative, disingenuous actors on Twitter. Zero tolerance. If I want to subject myself to that, I can begin seeing relatives again.
Attention all allopathic physicians🧑🏼⚕️(you know who you are):
If you don't want your patients visiting Dr. Google, be better.
Until you are better, you will be the second opinion.
When I was 54, I bought a cane to get around on a gouty foot. Today, age 63, I bought a pair of shoes to replace the ones I've worn out walking every morning.
Thanks low-carb diet!
No thanks to you legacy RDs, DGA, ADA/AHA.
Then several on social media observed (and supported with data) the cholesterol hypothesis is wrong, Keys fudged the 7 Countries study; it's not the fat it's the sugar; statins don't reduce risk of CVD/ACM, chronic hyperinsulinemia causes CVD; bigFood trains RDs and pays 4/n
Air pollution levels fall dramatically. Those ruminants must all be holding on for dear life—don't know how much longer thay can last without letting out all those toxic gasses …

My mom was taken to the ED this morning after being found — eyes open but non verbal — in her apartment. Head CT clear (no evidence of stroke). The hospital is on Crisis Standards of Care. She is 95.
9/9 I was discharged a day early because I wanted badly to get home to take care of my wife. The docs were cool about it. It pays to be an informed and compliant patient.
Interesting that "protein poisoning" (AKA rabbit starvation) is defined as a thing, but "carbohydrate poisoning" is not mentioned in the literature or popular press — despite the evidence all around us that too many carbs are harmful for most.
Others have thoughts on why not?
Them: T2D is a chronic, progressive disease. T2D is NOT REVERSIBLE or CURABLE! You cannot put T2D into REMISSION!!!!
Also them: Here, have another doughnut.

REMARKABLE: After 25 years on insulin, off insulin after 3 days of LCHF diet. What is wrong with people who continue to eschew a LC diet and instead continue to write insulin Rx?
Five years ago, after my mom quit statins, I had her on a low-carb higher-protein diet. She took NO medications, bowled on two leagues. She drove herself to church, the grocery store, and other shopping. She was 91 and weighed 120 lbs. But she didn't like the diet. Decades 1/5
@ProfTimNoakes
Because there is too much money to be made with treatment of this disease, a cure would cost the medical community $10,000 per patient per year.
"Studies show that ditching meat …"
Nope. Nothing you say or write will make me choose vegan "fakefood" over real, mostly animal-based food. Nothing. If you truly believe meat consumption=climate change, I can't help you.

Fasting hour 63, no hunger.
I really want to get off the BP medication completely. Down to "only" 25mg losartin each morning from 50mg losartin AND 150mg Toprol-xl every day.
I think intermittent fasting (IF) is a misnomer.
Isn't it better called intermittent eating?
Fasting is the default state (including while sleeping). Interrupted occasionally and briefly by feeding.
IE FTW!
It's the polar opposite of eating 5+ times a day, every two hours.🤬
