The 5 phases of academic conferences from a mentor!

I just tested + for COVID after evading this for 2 years. Triple vax and still feels dreadful… fever, bone pain, chills, headache. Its shocking how open society remains while hospitals/staff are on last legs in many senses. Testing out to Thursday. What’s the big plan? Take care
Commonly referred to as the “Best Program Director in America”, here is Dr. John Mullen vaccinating resident Dr. Sarah Marx. Volunteering their time with his wife Melissa Mullen, R.N., on Christmas Day to protect our frontline staff🎄🎅 ❤️

For IMG dreamers out there looking to be inspired, the 3 leaders of the historic xenotransplanted kidney press release below are all IMGs. Never give up on your dreams no matter how far they may seem. Impossible is nothing
I just heard from a senior and wise surgeon that “there are complications that are humbling and complications that are humiliating” and thought was too good of a quote to not share. Hope you have a complication-free Netflix-rich Friday night 🕺
Quite simply this has been the greatest honor of my life to head back to Skipton in the UK and address the students at my old school

Today is 2 years to the day my father passed away. I received several messages of support from patients in a role reversal. Nothing beats that. We are all humans together ❤️
Congratulations to our graduating fellow
@ZhiVenFongMD
. These hallways will fill differently without you 11 years later but what you have accomplished is truly remarkable. You have a terrific future ahead and thank you for the merch!!
Is the current academic meeting landscape sustainable with rising travel, registration, and meeting costs combined with tighter hospital budgets and expense reimbursement?
This will require advocacy at numerous levels. Would love to see this topic addressed at future conferences
@MichaelAvenatti
I am inspired by
@MichaelAvenatti
and his level of confidence as he unravels this deep chain of corruption like an abscess full of pus being incised and drained. Baller. Shot caller.
I am currently in self-isolation after a recent exposure. I remain asymptomatic and doing well. I’m looking forward to getting back out there and helping as soon as I get the all clear. Tough to see society being brought down to its knees like this but know we will prevail
On a personal note of pride, I am delighted to report that one of my most humble and hard working international research fellows matched at
@UofUHealth
as a categorical surgical resident. Congratulations
@Fidel_lv
!!
@zkastenberg
thanks for sending him my way!
I am incredibly proud of Alan Yang who delivered an immaculately polished presentation on uncinate ductal dilatation as a concerning feature as a 3rd year med student to an esteemed

I wonder what would happen if we shifted our work day to start just one hour later to make everything just slightly more compatible with regular society 🤔
(Context: Brainstorming childcare coverage for trainees)
There is a move towards shear rudeness and away from thoughtful discussion in our profession which transmits to peer-review. Be kind. Offer professional critique. Exercise restraint. But discuss your measured thoughts and experience. Few of us ever become Nobel Laureates
I lost another mentor and supporter. He gave me great life and liver advice and we kept in touch. He celebrated my successes and was an incredible mentor. I’ll miss his charm and wit the most. Goodbye to the father of liver surgery. He moved the needle more than most. RIP
This day always begins with mixed emotions as I first remember my father with a little prayer followed then by a small celebration with family. Happy Father’s Day to all dads today.

Surgeries canceling. Devastating. I don’t know the answer but if newer strains have lower virulence, can we transition to flu-like approach?
Rhetorical question but if surgeries off, shouldn’t that be the last resort after everything else including recreation shuts down first?!
Upside (or downside?) of being the local host

is you end up with things that can’t go on planes, and land at the podium as you moderate. Thanks to

A great quote from an impressive person I met today: “In your life you’ll be juggling a lot of balls, but only one is made of glass that you can’t drop - that’s your family”
Among the kindest people I’ve ever worked with is

Congrats to the incredibly supportive

If you’re lucky, you occasionally cross paths with a huge advocate and promoter who brings people under their wing and helps mould them into the best person they could be. Last night we celebrated a decade of success under the leadership of one such advocate. 🙏 for all you do
Great team and nice team photo on Baker 8 HPB Surgery at the Mass General. So grateful for the team’s hard work and patient care over the last month. 🙏

What is the deal with journals torturing authors with antiquated formatting requirements before manuscripts are reviewed? They can always be done later and most are redundant. This is non sensical and on us to improve. Maybe even standardize
Fantastic new policy across our hospital network to mandate masks for all healthcare workers on premises with a mask provided at the beginning of each shift

I hear comments about improved outcomes with neoadjuvant strategies for pancreas cancer are the result of selection bias. The answer is yes, precisely. That’s the point. It’s about establishing tumor biology. Its also less about tumor geography

Merry Christmas to all! Hope 🎅 came to visit. Also given how delinquent we are with our holiday cards this year, please remember to keep your expectations rock bottom low for all my outstanding journal reviews due in 2021! 🎉
It is an active, energy-driven, process to prevent meetings from spilling over into evenings. Unless in the OR, that’s non-negotiable family time at home. Define your own boundaries because hospitals won’t
I have no words to describe the hospitality and generosity of our hosts in China. This was an exceptional trip the likes of which I had never experienced. We were all spoiled and amazed. Glimpse only below 🙏

Wrong to let this pass silently for any with a voice/platform. Time to stand up to systematic racism and injustice. Time to revive morality and disable prejudice. Time to be kind. This is a call for change not violence. Somebody is capably inciting riots for us

Earlier today, hundreds of

EXCELLENT debate on use of neoadjuvant intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma: All agree on need for surgeon-led trials, no one size fits all, and that cholangiocarcinoma is not pancreas cancer. Great job at the podium

Ever tried to publish an anti-mainstream data-driven paper that opposes excessive use of pharmacologic VTE prophylaxis? It’s a long road filled with biases and early desk rejections… made me wonder what else never gets in but persistence is key

The most prolific leader in surgery today. A privilege to work in this department with Dr. Keith Lillemoe delivering the State of the Department address
@MGHSurgery
Heartwarming to see emails of support for Asian Americans today from a variety of sources although it’s total garbage that the country remains this racist in 2021 with need for these messages to go out in the first place
An absolute privilege to introduce the SSAT Resident and Fellow Conference Keynote speaker Dr.

I don’t stoop to the level of vile scum and hate all politics, but after all the stress, exposure, and paycuts for many doctors and nurses, this pathetic, corrupt, tax and draft dodging excuse of a human being thinks its ok to twist our motives for his political gain

Seen this once before in sport with the Danish soccer player Christian Eriksen in the Euros. It was horrific to see then and just as traumatizing now. Eriksen made a come back to the World Cup and now plays for Man United. Hope Hamlin survives and comes back strong 🙏

attacked our core fabric. This is a nation of immigrants and all physicians should openly and proudly unite against brazen hatred, racism, and xenophobia. Nothing short of total condemnation is acceptable.
