I think video games are inherently absurd, but it's a strength of the medium. As a designer it's the ultimate freedom knowing your audience will quickly accept that eating a cooked turkey from the sidewalk will heal a grievous wound. They accept it because they see it's true.

1. This is a really fun exercise! 2. If you're an indie dev making your first pixel art platformer or Metroidvania, consider that smooth animations are insanely time-intensive and much less important than overall art style to potential players. And SMW still looks beautiful imo!

IMO the hardest step for aspiring (commercial) indie game developers is learning to finish games consistently and efficiently - to move past game jams and prototypes but also avoid getting mired in a single project for years without end. It's a tiny sweet spot that's hard to hit.

I always liked this image from Shatterhand. All the graphics in NES games are built from 8x8 tiles but palettes are applied to backgrounds in 16x16 blocks. If you slap a grid on it, you can see how effectively Natsume worked within this constraint. Almost looks 16-bit! #pixelart

I feel like "elegance" and "jank" (awkwardness, lack of polish) are just byproducts of one's approach to game design and it's the approach that matters more to players. Jank is often the byproduct of ambitious, complex, and innovative design. It can be unironically good.

Having lots of "magic hour" moments in Spelunky 2 lately! That's what I call the period toward the end of development where seemingly small additions/changes have a big impact because there's so much already in the game for them to hook into. Feels really good! :)

Even though Kojima is so heavily influenced by movies, I feel like he also understands the absurdity of games well... and wields it instead of trying to work around it. If you're "serious about being absurd" you can get the most potential out of video games.

A fundamental problem with difficulty options in games is that there are many players between obvious skill levels. This means: 1. Players have to immediately make an important decision without adequate knowledge. 2. Players will continue to question that decision during play.

The Steam version of Spelunky 2 will come out shortly after PS4! We'll need a little extra time to iron out online multiplayer on PC. Release date for that soon! After Steam, we'll look into other platforms. We are excited for as many people to play as possible. :)

A fighting game where everyone starts with the same weak character and you level it up in ranked online matches, picking permanent stat upgrades, special moves, and cosmetics as you go. At tournaments, each competitor brings their own homegrown fighter that they designed/leveled.

Thanks to @WithChrisNKeith , I found out what the "Sorry, I'm Dead" creature from Monster Party was likely inspired by: this 1988 toy from Bandai (who also published Monster Party)! The name of the creature is Torigaran, which I saw a Japanese fan translate as "Chicken Carcass".

@TylerGlaiel Games in general have conditioned people to be anxious about "going the wrong way", "doing things in the wrong order", etc. Players are trying to read the minds of designers instead of just existing in the worlds. Because we overdesign, overemphasize beating games. Vicious cycle!

You should, of course, play games however you like, but I will say it's super fun to get good enough at a retro game to eventually beat it without save states or credit feeding. You'd be surprised how exciting it is. Plus, you pick up on little details that you'd miss casually.

Pixel art seems easy because it's less, right? What makes it difficult is that it feels like you can get it "perfect". A lot of pixel artists are perfectionists and it can make finishing games hard. There's also a lot of craft involved that most people aren't attuned to.

I think this kind of comparison (Hakkenden to One Piece) is important to understanding art. Art from the past wasn't made for museums... more often than not it was created to entertain the people of that time. We need to connect classic art and contemporary art like this more.

I'm definitely one of those players who prefers smaller, more densely interesting spaces with no fast travel. When I teleport around too much I start to lose sense of how the game world is put together. It's like being in a dream and becoming aware that you're just dreaming.
