Delighted that my appointment to the

With a face mask on, I get mistaken for a student a lot, and it is genuinely eye-opening to discover how appallingly people speak to students. Patronising, dismissive, straight-up rudeโฆ itโs really not okay.
After a very long day in the office itโs very nice to see the hard copy publication of this new article. Many thanks to
@HusaJaakko
for masterminding this JCL special issue.
Three weeks on a picket line, ten weeks in Hong Kong, the publication of our edited collection, some amazing trips and, to top it all,

Do other academics unhealthily obsess over student feedback? And focus overwhelmingly on the occasional negative comment? Student 1- "nice and concise, helpful lectures"; Student 2- "long and boring". How do you please everyone?

Travelling to Edinburgh today and with me I have sunglasses, sunscreen, jumper, raincoat, brolly, and a light scarf. Ye Scottish weather gods wonโt catch me!
Some positivity for folk making NY resolutions: I quit smoking in Kampala on Hogmanay 2012 (thinking was, if I can make it through the biggest party of the year...) and yesterday made it eight years

When I found out about being accepted to the doctoral programme at EUI I woke up the whole house! (Iโd been at SLSA 2004 at Glasgow U and hadnโt checked email that day until really late.) Life-changing news should definitely be celebrated.
I understand that academia is so very far from perfect, but all these "haha grad students are so naive for being excited about PhD acceptances" posts are so unhelpful. Some of us worked incredibly hard to get here and we're proud of that, and don't want to be discouraged.
Really pleased that the

Hogmanay is my stop-smoking anniversary, and 2021 makes nine years ๐ Best advice for quitting? Do it today, not tomorrow. That way you have one day under your belt and youโve already managed to get past a big party/potential pitfall.
As a PhD student I gave a conference paper on systems theory and legal culture. At the end the panel discussant said โLuhmann didnโt believe in culture so Iโm not going to indulge that paperโ. I detest that guy to this day.
whatโs your (anonymized!) conference presentation horror story, mine was when someone gave a talk and then in the q&a it was immediately pointed out that what they thought was interesting was just a spelling convention and the whole paper was based on a misunderstanding

Both locally and nationally, this refusal to sit down with union representatives and hold honest discussions about pay & conditions is ruining student experiences, destroying goodwill, and undermining the entire sector.

Yesterday I should have been co-writing an article, today I should be at the Doctoral College Away Day, and tomorrow I should be at my research centreโs annual Away Day, but instead Iโm on strike. Again.
