In the middle of all this anxiety, my middle son passed his final year medical school exams
@EdinburghUni
and is now a young doctor- having seen how hard he has studied his whole life, as well as keeping up with his
#sports
and
#music
, I couldn’t be more proud
#HappyMothersDay
Received a letter at work from a Muslim mother genuinely concerned and asking me to find a suitable marriage partner for her daughter. Don’t know what people think I do here
@SchoolofDiv
but it’s not matchmaking...unfortunately..
Tourists coming into
#NewCollege
@SchoolofDiv
quad say the funniest things. This morning, 2 young women’ Oh my God, what is this place? It says university of Edinburgh but is that a statue of
#Dumbledore
?’ I was so hoping
#Johnknox
would reply..
When all this is over I will spend alot of my time drinking coffee with friends and dining out in restaurants-
#academiclife
is over and this is my new career plan.
My eldest son who lives in
#London
can’t come home for
#EidUlFitr
because of
#COVID
ー19 restrictions. He’s always a joyous presence and the day will not be the same without him but I’m just
#grateful
he is healthy and well. Hoping to see him soon inshallah!
For only the 3rd time in over 23 years of doing
#Tftd
I am re-writing my script. Tonight feels very unsettling as our
#PM
is taken into
#intensivecare
. Prayers and wishes for his health and recovery - Ameen.
#Ghazali
‘ if you do not prepare now for the afterlife when will you do so? And if you do not sever these attachments now, then when will you sever them?’
Today asked by an American family in a cafe in
#LosAngeles
‘ so Scotland is part of England? After
#Brexit
, will Scotland leave England? And what do you mean when you say the United Kingdom?’ I thought, tomorrow I’m sitting in another cafe.
American family walks into
@SchoolofDiv
, ‘ wow this is stunning, do you work here?’ ‘Yes’ I reply. Husband smiles ‘is this where
#HarryPotter
was based? Do you teach kids how to fly? I reply ‘ if I could teach kids how to fly I wouldn’t be working
@SchoolofDiv
Delighted to have my next book proposal accepted by
@EdinburghUP
- a return to Islamic law
#fiqh
and some comparative
#theology
. Need a catchy title..
I don’t usually tweet my ‘And Finally ‘ pieces
#ExpositoryTimes
but I like this one - encounter between Sultan Malik and StFrancis of Assisi
#hospitality
Eldest son treats his father by renting 1965
#FordMustang
for the day for his birthday. Beautiful car. Guy in the picture comes up, smiles and warns , ‘Hey good folks, you know that our Lord is coming down on the 17th. You prepared?’ We obviously aren’t..
#EidMubarak
to everyone celebrating - the rush of morning prayers followed by and extravagant brunch with family and friends - the best part of the day.😊
I feel lucky to live in such a beautiful country like Scotland 🏴 most of the time but the last few weeks of gorgeous sunshine ☀️ and lush greenery makes me feel even more blessed.
So my youngest was asked ‘ have you been radicalized and do you know Abu Bakr al- Baghdadi? at Los Angeles airport. His reply was ‘ what? Who?’ He still made it out the other side!
Really enjoy supervising grad students even if half the time is spent allaying their fears about where their PhD will take them in life. I have to keep reminding them ‘ can you just complete writing chapter 1 first.’
My taxi ride ftom
#Cardiffairport
to hotel - driver was going fast and said ‘ oh Jesus’ so many times, I thought I’m either going to be a convert or dead by the end of this journey.
My youngest has just passed his
#drivingtest
and is now phoning me regularly with ‘ on my way home- do you need anything from
#Tesco
?’ Bless - time flies..
Teaching can be a joy while marking and grading are usually dreary tasks... so the excitement you feel when you come across a truly excellent dissertation and the student tells you that he felt inspired by your courses...
#makesitallworthwhile
Not been feeling well for a few days. My
#personaltrainer
from the
#gym
sends me daily exercises and I had to tell him I can’t keep up with the exercises just now ; he said ‘just sit in the back garden at least and get some sun’ - that I can just about manage.
After years of working, international travel, some amazing collegiality and friendships as well as a variety of broadcasting experience, the last three weeks has shown me that the only stimulus I really need is the occasional trip to the
#supermarket
.
As I prepare 1st
#iftar
, always remember my father who loved to count all the dishes my mother made and praised her on each of the dishes so lovingly cooked.
#Ramadhan
My humble advice to most prospective
#Phd
students: why do you want to do a PhD? it will be a long and mostly solitary experience.. after a few months no one will be interested in your topic, even you will get bored.Uni is important, but having the right supervisor is crucial.
Whenever I return to Professor Penns’s work I find his writing clear but also exploratory ‘ Syrian texts reflect a much more substantial and long lasting overlap between Christianity and Islam than the standard narrative allows’
My
#sabbatical
is soon to start - I’m looking forward to spending most of it writing, reading, some gardening and drinking tea 🫖 although that is what I do most of the time anyway.
Asked recently by a radio producer whether I could talk about being a ‘cultural Muslim’ as opposed to being a ‘Muslim’ - she meant me ofcourse- after 20 mins of discussion she said ‘ I need to rethink this topic. ‘
It will seem strange first time ever not to have family and guests for
#Eid
brunch. Growing up we were a family that always hosted on
#Eid
- my mother saw
#hospitality
as a blessing and said ‘ always better to have guests than be a guest’-
Holiday dinner conversation in
#SanFrancisco
eldest son says to me, ‘ what I don’t understand is you meet so many powerful and influential people and they think you’re smart!’ I’ve decided he’s making his own way home.
While I was so pressed for time for the
#PhD
viva today, it’s all worth it when you get to utter one of the most rewarding sentences in academic life ‘ congratulations, you’ve passed with only minor corrections!’ Joy all round.
My first visit to
#Riyadh
#SaudiArabia
in decades! My father worked as a
#psychiatrist
here in the later part of his career. Lovely to see some warm sun but mixed emotions as I return.
Once again looking forward to co - teaching our Islamic law course with
@jbralston
@EdinburghUni
@uoedivinity
next semester - ‘ from prayer to politics’ - has something for everyone - law, religion, justice, gender and politics!
I’m not sure how much difference my walking and exercising is making but I realise I find the language of quads, glutes, squats and hamstring much easier to understand than the language of scripture, prophecy, salvation and ritual.
Like so many I’ve cancelled every commitment in my diary for the next few months except stuff I can do from home. We had become accustomed to planning ahead, thinking long term when all we can do now is take one day at a time.
#dailygratitude
As my youngest packs his stuff for
#freshers
@EdinburghUni
he tells me which colour duvet cover he prefers as it will coordinate with his student room. It’s true - adulthood starts with an interest in soft furnishings
‘ Faith is not a theoretical affirmation of something uncertain, it is the existential acceptance of something transcending ordinary experience’
#PaulTillich
I was given a complimentary bottle of
#Prosecco
which I gave to a colleague as a gift. The look on her face was one of glee and absolute incredulity, ‘ are you sure?’ I replied ‘ it’s a bottle of wine not a kidney.’
One of my very first short books ‘ How to read the Qur’an’
@GrantaBooks
has been translated into Turkish..very pleased even if it came as a complete surprise!
İngiltere'nin önemli İslam araştırmaları profesörlerinden Edinburgh Üniversitesi'nden Mona Siddiqui'nin Kur'an'ı Nasıl Okumalıyız? isimli çalışması Süleyman Aydın'ın çevirisiyle Runik Kitap'ın "Nasıl Okumalıyız?" serisinden çıkmış.
First weekend in weeks when I don’t have to write anything, submit anything, read anything, travel anywhere or any other deadline. It’s a strange feeling.
As we move towards concluding remarks
@QariAsim
giving final reflections on
#gratitude
- for me thank you all for such a moving and powerful morning
@issacharfund
SO EXCITED TO FINALLY ANNOUNCE THIS!

I really hope you enjoy reading it! 🙏
