Happy to share this storymap recounting how #nonprofits organized to rebuild the neighborhoods affected by the #Beirut Port #blast , against many odds, and how some also contributed to advancing horizons of #commoning , even imperfectly.

Urbiciding Dahiya 🧵 Dahiya is the place name for 4 municipal territories: Ghobeyri, Haret Hreik, Bourj Brajneh, & Mrayjeh-Tahweeta-Laylaki. It also includes sections of the municipal areas of Chiyah, Hadath & Choueifat. Map by Issa al-Hajj, AUB-MUPP 2019 graduate.

Dahiya is only a suburb in its name. It's an integral part of Beirut--once you read Beirut as a polycentric agglomeration extending from Jounieh to Khaldeh up to Hazmieh. The urbicide of Dahiya by Israel's killing machine enabled by Western powers, is also that of Beirut.

I am finding it very, very difficult to teach. Such despair and disillusionment in the eyes of students. Or perhaps I am projecting mine. Or maybe I see it more because they're masked and their eyes are the only things I can read. Or it's both. It's just really heavy.

Why do rich Arabs fund northern universities and centers that already have large endowments instead of supporting arts, humanities and social sciences centers in Arab-based unis? Genuine question.

I miss being able to catch beauty in Beirut. It's just gone. I can only see angst, pain, poverty, injustice, fear, insecurity. Even the bougainvilleas & the sunsets don't have the same effect. The collapse is bringing out all the ugliness that we shoved under.

My point: each municipal territory in Dahiya includes dozens of neighborhoods dense w (contested) histories, palimpsests of memories, & multiple ranges of socio-spatial practices connecting human &non-human things. Each bombing erases thousands of these. This is what I mourn.

Israel is making the perceived sectarian geographies of Beirut and Lebanon key determinants in their ongoing war. Yet, these geographies are much more heterogeneous and dynamic than mainstream and essentializing media analysis.

Yesterday I told my child about how in 1984 my class got split in two--Muslims students in West Beirut, Christians in East Beirut, and we discovered which sect each was. We were 14. We used to send each other letters with our teachers who commuted across the demarcation line.

The city is becoming this mix of increasing precarity & insecurity, interspersed with moments of transient beauty (corniche walks, sunsets, bougainvilleas sights, etc). Every day, we lose a familiar place or an urban experience. Feels like collective urban grief.

Before the civil war, Dahiya was referred to by the names of its municipalities. Today, some refer to it by its administrative name: Sahel al-Matn al Janoubi. Dahiya's naming process is a story I wrote about. Here's a simple version published in 2009.

Most informal settlements in Dahiya have a long urban history that starts in the 1950s, and expands in the 1970s, with the colonization of Palestine and rural-urban migration to Beirut. See @mona_fawaz & @PeillenIsabelle reference work on this:

Bourj & Mrayjeh are the oldest towns. They include many one-storey houses w a front porch & a water fountain, surrounded by a garden full of trees where families & neighbors gathered--an architecture reflecting an urban lifestyle lost w urbanization & financialization of land.
