I’m a college grad.
I’m a law school grad.
I’m a corporate executive.
I’ve held senior positions in state govt.
I’ve served in the US Senate.
I’m not immune.
I’m not free of fear.
I’m not comfortable around police.
I’m black in America.
Save every single photo taken of every single person who broke through barricades, resisted lawful orders, overran Capitol security, violated the sanctity of the Chambers, and arrest and prosecute every single one of them.
As if they were Black.
In honor of my 50th birthday I offer you this gift. Please note that this was the actual size of my head at the age of 5. And this may be the last known photo of me with hair.
Let’s address the elephant in the room: numerous stories have been written about Massachusetts political figures who are rumored to be candidates for positions in the incoming Administration.
And my name hasn’t been mentioned once!
I’m tired.
Tired of making y’all comfortable with my blackness.
Tired of code-switching to belong.
Tired of historical accounts that don’t account for the many contributions of Black people and people of color.
And just tired of explaining why I’m tired.
#JustTired
On December 10, 2005 — Richard Pryor died at the age of 65.
From “The Richard Pryor Show” (1977) - a sketch where he played the first Black president...
I believe in hope. Hope matters. Do you know what I hope? I hope that all the newly-woke White allies have the stamina & fortitude to do the work required for equality & justice. I’m talking about the kind of stamina & fortitude it takes for Black folks to survive in America.

@DevalPatrick
and I were approached by 2 Celtics fans - who were celebrating early, shall we say, and asked to take a picture with us. We obliged. When I asked if they knew who we were, the answers were "news people" and "with the Celtics?". Yes and yes.
I've met
@JoeBiden
a few times but I can't claim to know him well. Yet I'll never forget the time he spent with my mom - in a wheelchair, recovering from knee surgery - on the day he swore me in. On that day, he made sure she knew she was the most important Cowan in the Capitol.
Thanks to social media - and my friends thereon - I’m reminded that today is the 8th anniversary of the day
@DevalPatrick
appointed me to serve in the
@USSenate
.
In honor of the vent, today’s tweets will be related to that day and the adventures that followed.
Enjoy.
When people ask me what I miss most about serving in the Senate, this photo offers an answer. The

when is the alumni luncheon?!?!
Psst. Over here. Got a sec?
Just wanna clear up something for you...
America does NOT need college football. Or pro football. Or sports right now.
Now, I enjoy a good athletic contest but...
America needs to get this virus under control.
Full stop.
Such a beautiful person was
@repjohnlewis
and he spent his life trying to make our lives and the world better and more equitable. May he rest now. And let us continue his work.
Would you like to know the hardest thing about this entire VP selection process?
Here it is:
@JoeBiden
could choose only one from among a multitude of incredibly qualified and dope women and women of color.
Today the oldest lad learned he will attend his old man’s alma mater for college.
His old man feels like a kid at Christmas.
And y’all know how much his old man loves Christmas.

Last Sunday afternoon, I was riding in the car with my 12-year-old son. Just us 2, riding to our (super casual) church. And talking about his first week of school.
Best part: Seeing his friends.
Worst part: Having to wake up early again.
All of it was super normal.
Yup.
Allow me to help all who may be confused or uncertain - because I know the question is coming up with some frequency - INSTITUTIONAL AND SYSTEMIC RACISM ARE REAL AND ALWAYS HAVE BEEN PART OF THE AMERICAN EXPERIENCE. To deny this is to deny the existence of the air we breathe.
A friend asked how I talk with my boys about what we’re living, from the murder of
#GeorgeFloyd
(and others) on.
I told him I have not perfected these hard conversations.
But, damn it, I wish y’all would stop giving me the opportunity to practice them.

Congrats to
@EdMarkey
on tonite’s primary victory. And kudos to
@joekennedy
for running a hard-fought race. I also congratulate

BREAKING NEWS: I’m trying to moderate the next

. My questions will be limited to: “For real?”, “Who said?”, “Are you serious?”, “You have backup for that?”, “Whoa! You gonna let her/him say that to you?” & “What Prince song most describes how you will govern?”
Dear Voters of America: if you’re waiting in line for hours upon hours to cast your ballot, please know that even though we may not know each other, you have my gratitude.

There have been 10 Black people ever to have served in the US Senate. Number 5 became the first Black man to serve as POTUS. Will Number 10 become the first Black woman - and Indian woman - to serve as VPOTUS?

A bunch of y’all calling for healing after Wednesday’s domestic terrorist attack in DC need to check yourself.
We can’t heal the body until we root out and destroy the virus of racism and white-nationalism that still courses through this nation’s veins!
Root. It. Out.
It’s been a long time since I studied crim justice in law school but still I think I recall the part of the US Code that says if you touch/threaten/harm my child, I will beat you until dental records won’t help ID you.
At least that’s what I wrote in my notes.
Find this fool.
We have 16yo and 12yo sons.
These past 4 years represent the only time in their lives when a Black person neither served as President or Vice President.
The events of January 20, 2021 will return them to their state of familiarity.

We all should be uncomfortable right now.
If you’re feeling comfortable and secure right now, you’re the reason the reality of America won’t ever come close to the promise of America.
Get comfortable with being uncomfortable.
On Thursday I’ll be honored to join
@Bakari_Sellers
in discussion about the election and the Black community.
Smartly, I’ll speak after Bakari.
The audience better get used to me saying, “As Bakari said...”, followed by my repeat of what Bakari just said.
The best work from home colleague is your teenager. They never talk to you or otherwise acknowledge your existence. And they have no problem staying 6 or more feet away from you at all times...especially if you're willing to use

Good people!
Today I completed a marathon! 26.2 miles!
I never thought I’d pull it off but I did!
It took all of my 52 years but as of today I’ve run just enough distance in my lifetime to equate a full marathon.
And I feel great!
We’re thrilled to announce that
@mocowan
is joining our team as Chief Legal and External Affairs Officer. He’s led a life of public service, sharing in our commitment to putting compassion toward others first.
Today I again told my 16yo that he’s a great kid w/a sharp mind & wicked sense of humor. And reminded him he is loved. But also reminded him too many still only will see the color of his skin and devalue him. But he always will be loved. This is what it is to be Black in America.
Also, 3 of the 4 people pictured here ran for the office of President of the United States. The 4th person pictured is wasting your Sunday with his tweets. But he did wear a nice bow tie on this particular day.
Good morning, good afternoon and good evening.
Wherever you may find yourself in this moment, focus on your blessings - no matter how small they may seem or distant they may feel.

Fact: I’m 51 years old, a reasonably interested and educated voter, a former public employee and...this is the most I’ve watched of any political party convention in my life.
I don’t miss the old days/ways.
#DemocraticConvention
Psst. Got a sec? I want to share some realness with you.
As concerned as I am about my boys having bad encounters with police...
It may be more likely that they will have an
#AmyCooper
encounter.
And those encounters still may cost them freedom. Or their lives.
As hot as it was in Boston today, I’m here to tell you it felt 20 degrees hotter on the streets of DC today.
But I still wore a suit all day because that’s how my mama raised me.
Pro tip: if you’re a political candidate, telemarketer, etc and you try to win me over with faux familiarity, you’re dead in the water as soon as you address me as “Bill”.
Note: this does not apply to Bernie Sanders, who called me Bill the entire time I was in the Senate.
When I joined the

I received a briefing from officials about all the things that I needed to do/avoid doing to comply with the law. Including what I could keep/not keep.
And the penalties/punishment.
I was so shook I left my own bow ties in Russell.
To all school board members across America: if you’re taking action to ban books and/or limit teaching about the tortured true history of this glorious Nation, you’re not solving a problem.
You. Are. The. Problem.
23 years ago this past Saturday I was fortunate to marry

23 years later, on this past Saturday, the Lord called Joyce home. I always knew Joyce was an angel. Rest in peace, Joyce. 💔❤️

Good Monday. Have been thinking about the “Talk” we’re obligated as Black parents to give our boys. Grateful that so many White friends and colleagues reached out with empathy. Here’s my ask: have a “talk” in your families/friend circles. We all have a role to play.

Allow me a personal moment: tonight my 12yo said he would have been worried about me today if I’d still been serving in the Senate. I was moved.
[Narrator] The 12yo received an XBox Series X for Christmas. The author’s older son expressed no similar concern for his father.
Nineteen top Black and Brown executives from General Electric Co., State Street Corp. and other major Massachusetts employers are launching a new fundraising operation that takes aim at systemic racism in Boston and across the state.
I used to be known for wearing fashionable bow ties.
I’m excited that you’ll now know me for wearing fashionable face masks.
And there are some beautiful face coverings being made by small and W/MBE businesses across America.
Be safe, be smart and support small biz.
A summer tale: Sipping on a beautiful bourbon. A small bug flies into my bourbon. Do I toss the bourbon? Heavens, No! I appreciate that the Good Lord wanted the bug and me to enjoy the bourbon. So I consume the bug with my next sip of bourbon. End of my summer tale. And the bug.
Update on social distancing at

- I haven’t seen my 16yo in 3 days. Neither of us has left our home during this period. He straight up ghosted me.
Just want to put this out there: for all of y’all with your hot or defensive takes on

and what he said about his campaign and obsession about when he jumped in...I am not here for your noise.

We’re about to make
#Juneteenth
a national holiday.
Long overdue.
Yet we’re rushing to legislate away the ability of educators to teach WHY
#Juneteenth
is a national holiday.
Long on hypocrisy.

Apropos of nothing: if your seat reclines and I’m seated behind you, I respect your right to recline. If it’s a bother, I’ll let you know and trust that you’ll respect my concern. If the situation is reversed and you punch my seat, respect my right to punch you in your throat.
