The reason GenX is taking this most seriously is because we are the current caretakers. So we are worried sick about our germy kids AND our at-risk parents and all that stands in between the spread from one to the other ... is us.

Seeing the words “prepared” and “authentic” to describe
@AOC
, often with surprise that she’s made it so far. This is the superpower of women of color: to prep more than everyone else, read the room, yet stay true to yourself because the alternative ain’t worth it. Just guessing.
Some news: I’ve decided to leave CNN Digital shortly after the election. After two decades in newsrooms, I’m creating my own path and launching a series of community media ventures. As always in my career, diversity is core to these efforts. I'll share details in coming days. 1/X
I am thinking how we said call your doctor. But not everyone has one.
… how we said socially distance. But not everyone has the space.
…how we said book vaccines online. But not everyone is on the internet.
…how I spent $100 on at-home tests yesterday.
So we enter Year 3.
To be desi right now is to have feeds teetering between America: vaccines available for all, extra doses here there everywhere, selfies of joy and reunions ... AND
India: friends and family begging for beds and oxygen and prayers, hoping they live to dose 1 or 2.

I think many journalists, especially of color, are struggling with the limits of our profession. But think of the newsroom without you. What stories would not get done? What headlines would not be tweaked? What angles go uncovered? Stay. Speak. Challenge. You make a difference.
Imagine if we chronicled the pain of, say, 15% of the U.S. population missing home, holidays and family for literal decades as much as all these think pieces on skipping this one Thanksgiving. Ask an immigrant.
My mother-in-law transitioned tonight. Her support literally propelled my life and career. My stoic husband held her hand till the end. Our bereft girls cling to the style, Punjabi moves, love of Bollywood, Friendly's and New England she leaves them. We are so sad but so
lucky.
Everything I learned in journalism, I learned by eavesdropping on veteran reporters nearby. That's hard in a pandemic so I just offered our
@epicenter_nyc
interns the chance to join me (silently) on reporting interviews via phone or Zoom. Passing along the idea.
...as a GenX woman (of color, which matters because my Indian family is opposite of social distancing), this is not a matter of Netflix recs or needing to “balance” better. Amid uncertainty, basic decisions feel weighty and like my life and world depend on them. So ya I see you.
With high-profile media departures, I'm bracing for the (highly paid) recruiter emails asking for names. They'll seek:
"a wide array of backgrounds"
"suggestions from your networks"
"a diverse pool of candidates"
I dutifully offer my binders. None hired. Repeat.

Thrilled, humbled and eager to share what I can on digital, diversity and cultural transformation for this newsroom filled with such talent and journalists I admire -- and in a city my family truly loves
And I don’t want to minimize the stress of other generations or make this competitive. Gen Z grew up in post-9/11 world and now deal with major social and educational loss. Millennials, besides being caregivers too, might be hurting as gigs in a gig economy dry up. But ...
Twitter tells me as you add me to your diversity lists. Thanks for that. I would also love to be on lists of powerful people, best media innovators, the 44 under 44, greatest moms, Lizzo fans, culture vultures, suburbia experts... Just to diversify your options.
I've been thinking a lot that if Tony Bourdain and Jonathan Gold were alive, we would be hearing so much more about restaurants, immigrant entrepreneurs and small businesses reeling right now.
Some news: I’m working w/
“Black and Brown community media to create a content-sharing and revenue-generating network...amplify their stories, both via each other and social platforms, and syndicate them to mainstream media outlets.”
Congrats

You would think I would be used to it by now, but I am constantly shocked at how often and easily people just lie. About big things! That can be easily found out!
I called my parents this week to inform them. My father -whose immigrant and stroke journey I have shared here -took the phone and said haltingly, carefully, “Sometimes … you have to take the risk.”
He would know. On the shoulders of such giants, we stand…and march onward.

I was on a pretty important call in the kitchen and 9yo hands me this and I mouth “ABSOLUTELY NOT” with a look on my face I hope she will always remember.

Shoutout to the South Asian journalists in US newsrooms who sounded the alarm on the

story early in news meetings and brainstorms. I see you and your fingerprints all over the work. Hoping your colleagues and boss send you all the praise—and promotions.
I firmly believe it is possible to balance being a journalist with being a good citizen, neighbor and uplifter of our communities. The time feels now to create a media ecosystem of outlets rooted in that same belief, centering Black and Brown voices. 4/x

Oh my, all these editors' notes acknowledging years of racism and neglect on issues of diversity in the newsroom and coverage. I should applaud it and I want to ... but I just keep thinking of who was passed over for their jobs, current and on the way up, and how to undo damage.
I usually wait till I am done with a book to tell you how deeply it spoke to me. But 78 pages into Caste, I’m ready to lobby to make it a part of both US history and global history curricula. It bridges so so so much. Thank you

My thoughts with

team. Stelter and RS were prolly closest thing to a CNN ombudsman there was. Were there blind spots? Sure. But I found them receptive to listening/fixing/including. The loss of a platform for many of us.
Industry, we are losing the good ones. Hold all the emergency meetings to retain the ones left. Maybe it’s deputies, admin assts, leaves, columns, podcasts, fellowships, sabbaticals, job swaps, coaching, special projects. Try.
Give them the same things white men get paid for.
I got the vaccine last week. 💉
I hesitated tweeting at the time because, honestly, I felt guilty. But I qualified for the shot and we need shots in arms so I offered mine.
No side effects, incredibly efficient.
Most surreal thing was the emptiness of the place. Ghost town.
I express my gratitude for a great 5yrs at CNN, the place I have worked longest to date (and I’ve worked everywhere!) I learned so much about breaking news, managing teams, pivoting organizations, the sheer heroics it takes to produce TV and the power of a trusted brand. 2/X

was amazing (Robert Thomson sent flowers basically saying “take whatever you need”). I was open (hard to hide) and felt so supported. Even better, women flocked to discuss TTC/miscarriage. Kid would’ve been 10 next month.
An effect of our failure to normalize talking about this: When I had a devastating miscarriage I didn't take significant time off of work. Not bc I couldn't (Vox Media has a liberal PTO policy and v. empathetic leadership), but bc it never even occurred to me that I deserved it.

It's true: the communication part of marriage is hardest. We both separately, unknown to the other, ordered pizza for dinner. Delivery guys showed up 5 minutes apart with my Indo-Pak and his grandma pie.
Was on a Zoom call and my husband barges in, makes lots of noise and I give him a nasty look and and wave. He drops this off (methi parantha, tomato, dhokla) and says, “The flower is edible!”

There is no magic. I happen to hit reply to the many many JOC who email me because white managers did not respond to a pitch or application. So my "network" is a direct outcome of your failure to expand yours.
Departure thread: I insisted on no awkward Webex sendoff but scores of beautiful people did it anyway with backdrops of Bollywood posters, Latin dance and more. So loved. So speechless. I read them part of an awards submission I wrote for our team recently. The beat goes on...

Key challenge to gig: Mostly white leadership team hires someone to solve their racism problem. As one diversity chief found, "The trouble is that they don’t actually want me to do my job."

Now that NYC journalists can book vaccine appointments, we about to get a wave of “this system sucks” stories. Just imagine what it’s like if you don’t have time, a device, internet connectivity or Twitter.
My beloved uncle, 86, died peacefully today in Guwahati. I called just as my cousin arrived to pay respects to her father. She’s immunocompromised so touched his feet, stayed 15 minutes, skipped rites. I can’t get her wailing out of my mind. Mourning during

I told teams this AM I am so proud: of stories, sharper headlines and images, live coverage pioneered, nuance and context we provide. Proud of building one of the most diverse teams in the biz. They will keep speaking up and pushing for what’s right 3/x
We need a vaccine site that fast-tracks restaurant workers, taxi drivers and hotel staff, preferably on a Monday or Tuesday. If yesterday was tough to secure appointments, today is a shitshow of overbookings, confusion, lives devalued. That’s putting in politely and OBJECTIVELY.
Yesterday my 10yo tested positive. Initially she cried, then bounded into my office where I had been quarantining and beamed and belted: “WE CAN BE TOGETHER.” I had planned to watch Loot and bask in quiet but we switched to The Sleepover and laughed. To be so loved is amazing.
Hearing from so many women after my
@BrianLehrer
segment picking up on my point: We are not covering the vaccines efficacy AND side effects on or for women enough. Examples:
- J&J's latest
- False + on mammograms after a vaccine
- Irregular periods post vaccine
My father said take the risk. The women in my life, on the other hand:
8yo: “My mom quit her job so she don’t have to work anymore.”
16yo: “Does this mean you can make political statements now?”
MIL: “When are we are off your AT&T phone plan?”
And my mom ftw on the Facebook
Woke up thinking about long stories on newsrooms that want diversity as a part of the change but don’t quote or seemingly involve people of color in that strategy.
