It's so funny to me when fancy profs act snooty, because even if you're huge in your field, it means you have like 20 admirers. The magic disappears as soon as you leave the conference! You still have to wait in line at Trader Joe's like the rest of us.

Every evening I think, I’ve done nothing all day. Except keeping two children alive, healthy, fed, entertained, & emotionally OK, plus a house clean & nice to spend time in. It’s a good reminder both that domestic labor is real labor & that it’s easy to subconsciously devalue it.

OK, one super-easy thing I did last year that almost every student thanked me for in evals was listing an estimated time-to-read (or -watch or whatever) for everything on the syllabus. I know some people don't like that kind of thing, but you can see why a student might.

One persistent mystery of this week has been why 1) the Zionist attackers were permitted to erect a Jumbotron broadcasting footage from 10/7; 2) why the Jumbotron *stayed up* and broadcasting footage for days. Many, many people begged UCLA admin to cut the power or take it down.

One thing people don't mention about academic writing: most academics don't actually have access to professional editing. Peer reviewers generally touch only glancingly on style, and copy editors don't really address it. I love being edited, but it just doesn't happen often.

I think sometimes people don’t realize that grad students are adult human beings with lives and families and real bills. I remember once, at a union rally in grad school, being told by an undergrad that maybe we just shouldn’t have babies if we didn’t have proper support.
