“Protesters” did appear in Solihull. They located themselves next to a church and war memorial. They were moved on quickly enough. I and another Councillor went to check the disturbance. They got the cinema and shopping centre closed down as they were moved on

Been on the phone to someone really upset that they won’t be able to meet anyone. They: - live alone - aren’t in a bubble - feel their only contact with the outside world is meeting friends for food & drinks. I understand the need for the measures, but they fall harder on some.

The things we see on our streets are almost always a result of political decisions (or failure to make them). Homelessness and rough-sleeping is very much linked to: - housing stock - rent (and non-fault evictions) - employment (and wages) - social support (UC) - and pensions.

Sounds like you’ve had an encounter with “If you build enough houses, some will be affordable”? There are many reasons why this does NOT happen. The most important being that developers won’t build so many homes that prices drop. Basic oligopoly economics. 1/3

Revelation after several days of largely fruitless debate: there are quite a few otherwise well informed housing planners who seem to have absolutely no grasp of housing/land economics. They plan houses to be built, so that is the solution. And that's it.

I removed 15 on the night. It has been reported to @WMPolice and is being investigated. There are electoral offences, but also an intention to target a social group because of the language used on it. @SolihullLibDems have also been targeted in the last week.

As the Imams went to light the candles they then said "wait till the fireworks go off. BANG!". This Councillor was speaking to another Conservative Councillor. If I could hear it then I'm sure at least 3 others could. It went unchallenged.

The #Budget2021 is incompatible with the #ClimateEmergency . Lowering taxes on domestic flights, when we need to be making lower carbon alternatives cheaper is ridiculous. This will be pilloried at #COP26Glasgow and rightly so.

I made both local Conservative GE candidates aware, and credit to them, they both took it seriously. Solihull Conservative Councillors were also made aware during a briefing for Governance. Some made jokes about it, but the laughing stopped when I pointed out the criminal nature.

This service is to commission the Mayor and Councillors of Solihull. Faith leaders from across the borough were in attendance, Hindu, Christian, and Muslim. One of the Conservative Councillors said during the reading from the Quran to say "this sounds like bl**dy Türkiye".

62% of the vote in Shirley South for @shahinuashraf makes me smile from ear to ear. I was very slow after the count yesterday. Left nothing in the tank. Fell asleep before 7pm last night and woke up close to 9am this morning. Never looked forward to Full Council as much 😁

Last night was exhausting, but the last 24hrs have been so worthwhile. ⁦ @SolihullHub ⁩ shared materials for the 1 million mask project. So I was (learning) sewing till the wee hours. Managed to make 40-50 and gave them out at #BLM in Shirley. Over 100 masks shared today 😷

Since then he has been working on philosophy from an armchair, the window and occasionally from the garden (if it’s warm) and protecting bird life. His policy is to prohibit idling engines. Idling is his forte so we really should listen.

Yesterday morning we had the Civic Service at St. Alphege. It was a beautiful celebration, recognising Christian traditions, and the faith of the Mayor of Solihull. The Reverend invited a local Imam to read a verse from the Quran (C24:V35) about "light upon light".

It took me over an hour, just to get into 29th place in a queue at a local surgery. I was calling on behalf of a resident and they simply couldn’t face it anymore. Austerity + pandemic + local policy on housing in #Shirley = GP services in dire need of support.

Access to GP services is a huge problem now in Solihull, and I hear elsewhere too. Many are frustrated, angry and scared at not being able to get hold of their doctor. I've been speaking to desperate residents all week. This deserves far more attention than it is getting.

Just to be clear, the grant is good, but: - it doesn’t cover enough homes (runs out too quickly) - it kicks in too late (why not now) - £5k won’t help those in most need (as it’s 10-50% of costs, depending on system). Feels like everything is for the headlines, not the people.

Thousands of trees planted along the route of the HS2 rail line have died because they weren't watered. Now taxpayers will have to foot the bill for replacing them. BBC One, 6.30pm.

I’m one of the fortunate ones who’ve been able to get the vaccine. I seriously underestimated my immune response to it and it knocked me for 6. But just think what the actual virus would have done to me, or someone classed as more vulnerable? If you get offered it, take it.

Everyone knows the problem with pollution is that people breathe it in. Some might think the solution is to stop people breathing. I'm in that 'weird' category of people that think "maybe we should try reducing the pollution so it's safe to breathe here?". #ClimateHealth 2/2

I'm not going to get into name calling. Others can have the debate over whether it's worse than other actions. This week has been demoralising. Many Local Authorities are going to struggle to make ends meet, but not nearly as much as the children on #FreeSchoolMeals

Our #ClimateEmergency measures were voted down by Solihull Conservatives (less 1 abstention). If we mention #ClimateBreakdown we’re accused of playing politics. Not sure how we raise the most pressing issue of our day then 🤷‍♂️ Thanks to @Solihull_Labour for supporting us.

Good showing of #Shirley Councillors at @FriendsShirley litter pick today. More than 50 people helping out! Never been so hard to find bits of litter. What a testament to the work of Friends of Shirley Park 💚

I slept on this before tweeting. It still makes no sense that Knowle (3.2 miles from Solihull) gets a station, but Shirley (2.2m) doesn’t. Apparently 1 station wouldn’t work in Shirley, but it would at Hillfield and Dovehouse and it’s nothing to do with Con Cllrs in the wards.

Local Authority funds are in the worst state of my lifetime. The responsibilities passed down to LAs have had ‘savings’ (cuts) added to them. It’s not giving power, handing a knife and saying “you choose the cut”. It’s cowardice. @Conservatives , you need to own it ✂️
