Ever heard something, that doesn't tally, so much that you start to question your own sanity? The "I voted for a No Deal Brexit" line is ubiquitous today. I don't remember hearing it in 2016.
Decided to check usage on Google...
Dog-whistle politics at its worst from Mr Johnson.
Very good point from

Also the doctors and nurses in the

We are better than this.

Boris Johnson said fellow EU citizens should stop “treating Britain as their own”.
Is he going to say that to the face of Lukasz...
...the Polish porter of Fishmongers’ Hall, who defended Brits as if they were his own, against the London Bridge terrorist?

Really proud to see
@shahinuashraf
as Mayor of
@SolihullCouncil
for the next year. I’m sure I’m one of many she will make very proud over the coming year.
Having been officially revealed to the world as Green Group Leader/Leader of the Opposition on Solihull Council, I should probably say something about it.
Firstly, thanks to
@CBGreenSteve
who’s been navigating the group through challenging waters.

“Protesters” did appear in Solihull. They located themselves next to a church and war memorial. They were moved on quickly enough.
I and another Councillor went to check the disturbance. They got the cinema and shopping centre closed down as they were moved on
Finally, to anyone who is the target of discrimination like this, there are more people who stand with you than against you. No matter your faith, race, gender, sexuality, age, or disability, as was said in the sermon "we have more that unites us than divides us".
Everyone who had cinema tickets wasn’t happy with their efforts.
Intimidating members of our community doesn’t help anyone. Your hate is not welcome in Solihull.
If you want to make this a better place to live, there are lots of constructive groups you can join. Do that instead
“Other than Crossrail, the Boris bus, the cable car, the garden bridge, the new airport, and the water cannon, just look at what he’s done for our infrastructure. I think we can all agree HS2 is safe in the PM’s hands”

Been on the phone to someone really upset that they won’t be able to meet anyone. They:
- live alone
- aren’t in a bubble
- feel their only contact with the outside world is meeting friends for food & drinks.
I understand the need for the measures, but they fall harder on some.
I’m supporting
@DrSextonGreen
in the leadership election.
We’re blessed with talent in these elections, which reflects the party. I know exactly how capable Rosi is from working together.
We can never have too much credibility, inclusivity or success.
#ROSI4LEADER
This is exactly why it’s so dangerous to play partisan against minorities.
History repeatedly taught us that legitimising discrimination against minorities leads to abuse, attacks, murders, and even genocides.
We said “never again”. We need to do better.
My ratio of "welcoming new members of
@TheGreenParty

So many people don't see this election as JUST "get rid of the Tories". They want to see something better, not superficially different.

The things we see on our streets are almost always a result of political decisions (or failure to make them).
Homelessness and rough-sleeping is very much linked to:
- housing stock
- rent (and non-fault evictions)
- employment (and wages)
- social support (UC)
- and pensions.
My research last year showed over 36,000 missing council and social rent homes that should have been in new developments, just since 2016.
Tory politicians act like homeslessness is some kind of tragedy outside their control but it is on them:

The themes of unity and light upon light carries another meaning. It also means we stand with those who others try to alienate, and we shine a light on their actions when needed.
That is what this post is for.
Just for accuracies sake, I wanted to zoom in on 2016 and check if it was called "WTO Brexit" then.
Also added a control term of "Engelbert Humperdinck" in for the same time period. Who voted for Engelbert?
Sounds like you’ve had an encounter with “If you build enough houses, some will be affordable”?
There are many reasons why this does NOT happen. The most important being that developers won’t build so many homes that prices drop. Basic oligopoly economics. 1/3
Revelation after several days of largely fruitless debate: there are quite a few otherwise well informed housing planners who seem to have absolutely no grasp of housing/land economics.
They plan houses to be built, so that is the solution. And that's it.
Well said
@MollyMEP
. Having a tree as your logo and saying you love the countryside isn’t enough.
@Conservatives
need to think about sustainability in its original sense.
“The Tories’ rebranding won’t wash: being green is about more than fluffy bunnies”
Things I learned today from Conservatives:
Councils - “shouldn’t come whinging to government over budgets”
Airports - “need some money from government? How much? Sure!”
#ExcludedUK
- “are you an airport? Go away then.”
I removed 15 on the night. It has been reported to

@SolihullLibDems
have also been targeted in the last week.
Whatever your beliefs, we can all respect others. This was a level of disrespect that isn't appropriate for anyone, let alone an elected representative.
But it got worse:

As the Imams went to light the candles they then said "wait till the fireworks go off. BANG!".
This Councillor was speaking to another Conservative Councillor. If I could hear it then I'm sure at least 3 others could. It went unchallenged.
Child poverty is one of the measures that truly shows how developed a country is.

I made both local Conservative GE candidates aware, and credit to them, they both took it seriously. Solihull Conservative Councillors were also made aware during a briefing for Governance. Some made jokes about it, but the laughing stopped when I pointed out the criminal nature.
Last week I was contacted, whilst at a hustings, to say that posters had been put up claiming to be from me and
@SolihullGreens
. They were put up before the ENGSVN game. They were surrounding a place where a local group meet for Jumu'ah.
This service is to commission the Mayor and Councillors of Solihull. Faith leaders from across the borough were in attendance, Hindu, Christian, and Muslim.
One of the Conservative Councillors said during the reading from the Quran to say "this sounds like bl**dy Türkiye".
This was a LONG campaign, but is proof that
@TheGreenParty
gets things done:
“Victory for Shirley residents in long campaign to remove treasured green space from housing plans”
In the theme of "unity" and "light upon light" all faith leaders present were invited to light candles, symbolising the common light they shine for those in the community.
This is when the same Councillor said "they're going to burn the building down".
62% of the vote in Shirley South for

I was very slow after the count yesterday. Left nothing in the tank. Fell asleep before 7pm last night and woke up close to 9am this morning.
Never looked forward to Full Council as much 😁
I’m angry at a Full Council meeting. I was denied the opportunity to speak in a debate on an embarrassing motion for the Council.
The Leader can speak whenever he wants, but not the Leader of the Opposition.

An observation that changing the cap on the bottle doesn't change the contents isn't a pivot.
BTW, straw man critiques appear like you're diverting from the (different) issues with both of them. It's not only "the left" critiquing, many people and repuatable journalists are too.

They’re working under extreme pressure at the moment. Remember to thank them. They aren’t to blame for the wait or this crisis.
But there’s also an exciting opportunity to support real and meaningful change. People see what we do when we get elected and more people like it.
We have to repay the trust of the electorate who put us here, and we will. Looking forward to the year ahead. 💚

This is why it can often feel like being gaslighted in politics:
“We really care about the environment and getting to zero carbon”
Followed by...
“The airport needs to expand for the economy. Don’t worry, we don’t count the planes in our emissions figures”.
This was two agenda items after a review of Solihull's Net-Zero Action Plan.
A Green New Deal can end the region's reliance on the aviation and motoring sector, but I guess you can't teach old dogs new tricks.

Yesterday morning we had the Civic Service at St. Alphege. It was a beautiful celebration, recognising Christian traditions, and the faith of the Mayor of Solihull. The Reverend invited a local Imam to read a verse from the Quran (C24:V35) about "light upon light".

Maybe they should call it “the price hairline”.? It keeps moving up, and creates a greater degree of anxiety for those with less insulation.
This is serious though. Without significant intervention from a government with a heart, a brain and a plan, it’s looking grim.
It took me over an hour, just to get into 29th place in a queue at a local surgery. I was calling on behalf of a resident and they simply couldn’t face it anymore.
Austerity + pandemic + local policy on housing in

= GP services in dire need of support.
Access to GP services is a huge problem now in Solihull, and I hear elsewhere too. Many are frustrated, angry and scared at not being able to get hold of their doctor. I've been speaking to desperate residents all week.
This deserves far more attention than it is getting.
We are presented with 2 clear options:
1. Consciously change our systems to avoid catastrophic

2. Carry on till the systems break irreparably
Option 1 offers opportunities. Option 2 has dire consequences for human and non-human life on this planet 🌍
I feel flattered that one of the Conservatives is talking about me on

These are exactly the kinds of homes we need to see in Solihull. They don’t just build themselves though. Needs assistance and direction from government, at all levels:
Also congratulations to Cllr Shahin Ashraf and Cllr Ben Groom on selection as deputies.

Just to be clear, the grant is good, but:
- it doesn’t cover enough homes (runs out too quickly)
- it kicks in too late (why not now)
- £5k won’t help those in most need (as it’s 10-50% of costs, depending on system).
Feels like everything is for the headlines, not the people.
Green Party MP Caroline Lucas says the government's boiler upgrade scheme is "yet another of Boris Johnson's big flagship policies that, when you start to look at some of the details, they're just not there" which sends "a very bad signal" ahead of COP26

It still makes no sense that Knowle (3.2 miles from Solihull) gets a station, but Shirley (2.2m) doesn’t.
Apparently 1 station wouldn’t work in Shirley, but it would at Hillfield and Dovehouse and it’s nothing to do with Con Cllrs in the wards.
