My daughter is a waitress. She works hard & she's good at what she does. I'm proud of her. Tonight she had customers with a $60 meal who left a $2 tip. Y'all, don't do that. Just don't. My philosophy is 20%, regardless of service quality. Generosity is always a good idea.

Over the past 6 months I've spoken to many pastors about COVID & every one has told me they've had members leave over how the virus was handled. Some wanted more preventative measures, some wanted less. Pray for pastors. Pray for churches. And give leaders grace & patience.

Of all the issues within conservative Evangelicalism, it seems to me that Christian nationalism is the biggest threat right now. It seduces with the promise of power and safety but is little more than idolatry under the guise of Christianity and patriotism.

My greatest concern with this is when President Trump takes credit for “saving” Christianity. This goes beyond vulgarity or immorality. This is blasphemy. And it’s in a Christian pulpit. I fear that, for many, it will not even seem that remarkable. We’ll just shrug.

Trump attended the Christmas service this morning at First Baptist Dallas. Pastor Robert Jeffress asked him to come up and give a Christmas message to the congregation, and a MAGA rally broke out. Trump’s ‘prayer’ was about Afghanistan, inflation, gas prices and the border.

One of the best changes I've made in preaching has been moving from 45-50 minutes to 32-38 minute sermons. I've found that I don't have to cut content, I just have to be more precise/intentional & cut repetition. Truth: Very few us are good enough preachers to go for 45+ minutes.

Legalism and liberalism are the same cancer - they are both a denial of the sufficiency of scripture. Liberalism masquerades as love and claims that scripture goes too far. Legalism masquerades as holiness and claims that scripture doesn't go far enough. Reject both.

In the 91 year history of @brainerdbaptist the greatest number of baptisms in a single year was 81 in 1952. We asked God to give us 100 baptisms this church year. This Sunday, our annual Harvest Day, we are scheduled to baptize our 100th new believer since March 1. I can’t wait!

Please pray for my daughter Grace. She had an allergic reaction over the weekend & we took her to urgent care, they treated her. She is 90 minutes from home & having another reaction & meds are not helping. They’re taking her to an ER. We are headed there now.

I was introduced today to "The Hand of God" by Yongsung Kim. It took my breath away. It's a painting from Peter's view, as Jesus extends his hand. It sums up so much of my life, struggling in the storm, dependent on Jesus. Jesus is there, full of grace and strength. So beautiful.

I’ve had politicians call & ask me to endorse them. I’ve had politicians come visit my office to ask the same. But I cannot imagine a scenario where a pastor should endorse a politician. It seems foolhardy to me. Speak to issues but leave support for individual candidates alone.

Make no mistake, pastoral ministry, done rightly, is hard. Studying, understanding and interpreting scripture is hard. Serving broken people, as a broken person yourself, is hard. Inevitable disagreements among the church are hard. But God is good & ministry itself is a reward.

I love the Kurds. I've spent a lot of time with them in Kurdistan, not to mention in Little Kurdistan in Nashville. Many of my friends are Kurds. What is happening right now at the hands of the Turkish government, after the US withdrew military support, is tragic. God help them.

27 years ago my dad was an A.Div. student at @SEBTS but left after a Prof. told him, “If God had written the Bible it would have been a better book.” Now my dad is a student there again. I’m so thankful for SBC leaders who were faithful to contend for the innerancy of scripture.
