New investigation from me: Local developers are buying rent-controlled apartments, clearing out existing tenants, and marketing to housing choice voucher holders -- incentivized by DCHA's overpayments. In the process, they're eroding affordable housing.

For years I've been told by editors at national outlets that nobody wants to read about DC statehood initiatives because it's such an insane and far-off idea. Thinking of them tonight as the president unilaterally calls for the military occupation of our city

In case it needs to be said, believing in home rule is incompatible with allowing a federal body, in which DC residents have no representation, to overturn the policy and will of 13 elected legislators -- who reflect the will of more than 700,000 people

I support D.C. Statehood and home-rule – but I don’t support some of the changes D.C. Council put forward over the Mayor’s objections – such as lowering penalties for carjackings. If the Senate votes to overturn what D.C. Council did – I’ll sign it.

Brianne Nadeau and Trayon White are no longer on the District’s housing committee, leaving it without a ward-level representative of some of the city’s poorest neighborhoods, and without the member who oversees homeless services

Feels like screaming into the void at this point, but in advance of tomorrow's budget vote would like to submit for the digital record that I still get between 2-5 emails a week about people who live in apartments that are literally falling apart c/o rapid rehousing subsidies

Life imitating art? Or art imitating life? I wrote about how hard it's been for me, and you, to find an apartment in and around D.C. right now.

Another way to look at this is: D.C. is being cited as an example before SCOTUS of how not to treat people experiencing homelessness. Too bad DCist doesn't exist anymore and WAMU won't hire another housing reporter!

For @Slate , I wrote about how the pandemic has shaped the way neighborhoods function, and what that portends for the kind of development we’ve been chasing

Thousands of people are stomping in unison. Someone just climbed a light post on H St. And now they’re screaming “QUIT YOUR JOB”

It is just too perfect to be in the process of writing an article about slumlords and get stuck in the elevator of the building once I get there

Heading down to LaFayette Square now. Huge police presence in Columbia Heights. Dozens of officers around parking garage, metro, entry to Target. CVS is boarded up, as are many of the restaurants along Park Road

Really glad that @libbycwatson dedicated an issue of her great newsletter to public housing conditions issues in D.C. As I reported in 2019, children in Ward 8 are hospitalized 10 times more for asthma-related issues than kids who live in wealthier parts of the city.

One family with a 2 y/o son received about $13,400 from STAY DC to cover rent after both parents lost their jobs. The check was cashed, but building managers say they never got it -- so STAY DC issued another $13,400 check that also allegedly went missing.
