If it is dark and you have clear skies, go take a look outside - strong aurora borealis is currently underway in Europe. Reports of auroras are coming in even from Switzerland.
Here's an map from NOAA's OVATION model(but auroras could be visible beyond area highlighted).
Ulawun volcano in Papua New Guinea has erupted. On satellite imagery it is a bit hard to see through other clouds but one can notice a consistent source of cold cloud tops developing after 6 UTC right at the volcano's location.

Hurricane Otis in the Eastern Pacific has exploded to an extremely dangerous Category 5 level with sustained winds to 270 km/h and has just made landfall in Mexico, having the city of Acapulco in the eyewall.
TT
The latest OVATION model runs are very impressive with 100% contour reaching into southern Finland. Europe, once it gets dark and it is clear where you are, give it a try.
The forecast below is about an hour into the future.

Be on the lookout for auroras tonight, especially at higher latitudes. Even though the Moon is full, they could be bright enough to show up regardless.
TT
Eagle-eyed users might have already noticed that our observation maps of France have gotten a lot more crowded.
We can now show new observations from over 2000 stations in France and its overseas territories. Compare maps from 2023 and now below.

Signs of developing

án can be seen in water vapour satellite imagery. Notice the horisontal-looking belt of drier air in the top part of the image.
TT
An intense cyclone over the northeast Atlantic is currently bringing rough weather to parts of northwestern Europe.
High seas and strong winds continue through the day today.
MG
There is a chance of aurora again tonight. Probabilities in the OVATION model are increasing noticeably after 17 UTC (the upcoming hour). If you get into the 10% line, you may already see something.
TT
A tropical system is developing in the Arabian Sea. There are still disagreements among models but it does appear that it could affect parts of Oman and Yemen next week. A point of concern is forward movement, and resulting heavy rainfall.
TT
Here's a look at lightning detections in Europe this morning. Lightning have been detected off the coast of Norway and Iceland, as well as in Greece and across far eastern Mediterranean Sea.
TT
Here are lightning detections across Europe right now as a serious weather situation continues across parts of the continent, such as southern Germany where flooding is taking place.
TT
Stay weather aware in the Baltics this weekend - multiple consecutive runs of our 4x4 km model hint at a line of thunderstorms in the region capable of severe wind gusts during Sunday daytime.
TT
An "extreme" marine heatwave, where over 5 consecutive days of sea surface temps exceeding 90th percentile (threshold) are hit, is ongoing (SST's >6*C) from the UK down to Spain thanks to an displaced Azores high pressure over the month of June.

Serious rainfall event is expected in Greece, with some forecast models forecasting 4-digit rainfall amounts in millimetres over the next 3 days. Red warnings are already in effect in the country. Here's a higher end solution from our 4x4 km model:

A thundery week is underway across the Middle East with strong thunderstorms expected in several countries throughout the week. Here is a scenario from the ECMWF model:
TT
Super Typhoon
#Mawar
has re-intensified and is now equivalent to a Category 5 hurricane with winds of 175 mph.
It will continue WNW toward the Philippines and Taiwan where some impacts are expected, though landfall is not currently forecast.
MG
Dangerous afternoon is ahead in parts of Southeastern Europe as conditions exist for long track supercell thunderstorms. Supercells are also simulated by our 4x4 km model, as evident in the updraft helicity scenario:
TT
Line of thunderstorms with a history of causing a tornado in Lithuania is now spreading into Latvia. Particularly be vary of parts of the line where the otherwise straight line makes a notch.

Well, that escalated... An unexpectedly strong(G4) geomagnetic storm occurred earlier today, evident also in the NOAA's OVATION runs throughout the day.

Our 4x4 km model is still deep in 4-digit millimetre (1 mm = 1 l/m2) territory when it comes to forecasted rainfall amounts until midnight on Thursday in Greece. Regardless of specific values, this looks to become a catastrophic flood event.

With regard to social media reports coming out of Latvia today of a possible tornado, the 0 UTC run of our 4x4 km model was in fact simulating some updraft helicity into Latvia for this afternoon.

Thunderstorms have been moving around in Saudi Arabia this evening. Guidance hints at additional rain and thunderstorm activity in the Middle East during the coming days.

Here is an output from our nowcast model, which is updated every hour.
The worst conditions should now be shifting into Normandy. Winds will also increase in the southern UK.

A violent windstorm is possible in the second half of the week in Central Europe, North Sea and Baltic Sea regions. The central pressure in the associated area of low pressure could fall below 960 hPa.
TT
The dust from Sahara desert has now made it as far north as Estonia and Finland, as evident also on geostationary satellite data. In this RGB composite product, dust near the surface shows up in magenta colours while dust aloft is brighter pink/peach.
TT
Aurora probabilities over Finland etc have reached 100% in latest OVATION runs. This would mean auroras intense enough that people across Europe could try to at least take a long exposure photo of the northern sky, if it is dark at their location.
TT
A tale of two types of weather this week across Europe; with positive heights across southern portion, above average temps will occur through this week while below average temps & stormy weather shift into Northern Europe (i.e. UK, Denmark, Netherlands, etc).

The storm has a nearly perfect satellite presentation with a small warm eye, a very cold eyewall, & expansive outflow in all directions
Cyclone Ockhi in the Arabian sea is struggling with some dry air and wind shear at the moment, as seen by the cold cloud tops (strong thunderstorms) displaced SE of the center. It does have strong outflow to the north and west though!
