Dear
@GOPLeader
: I wrote this because as the
@HouseGOP
holds its “hearing” today on anti-science and anti-family legislation, I wanted reality to have a voice. I hope you read it. And I hope you consider dropping your support of this dangerous bill.
Beto is now gaggling outside of the Abbott presser with what appears to be every television camera in America, raging in English and in Spanish, and msnbc cut away from Abbott to carry Beto live.
Hi
@GOPLeader
: Last week, I went into labor. At 22 weeks, 6 days, our baby—whom we very much wanted—had no chance at life. “Born alive abortion” is not real and your reckless rhetoric endangers empathetic, amazing doctors and nurses who support women like me on their worst days.
The
#BornAlive
Abortion Survivors Protection Act would simply require doctors to provide the same level of medical care to a baby born after surviving an abortion as they would any other baby. Dems have now blocked us from voting on it 80 times.
Former Senator Bill Nelson claimed Russian hackers had gained access to Florida election systems. He was mocked. The Mueller Report confirms this happened. Think about how close his race was and the gubernatorial!
So here’s the unspoken secret about Stephen Miller’s emails. Any reporter who covered DC in 2013 (and many who did still are), received multiple unhinged, racist screeds per week from Miller and about immigration when he was Sessions’ spokesman. Direct to THEIR inboxes.
Since today’s
#CancelStudentDebt
announcement tease, I’ve been obsessed with the inflation calculator and how boomers’ sense of money/value is so off. My mom made $13K/year as a public school art teacher in 1972. Paltry right? You may be shocked to see that in today’s US dollars.
people are gonna focus on the movie because Sandra Bullock won an Oscar for it, but the biggest questions are for Michael Lewis—a journalist!—who is a high school classmate of Sean Tuohy and appeared on a panel with him as recently as THIS MARCH
Former NFL player Michael Oher, subject of "The Blind Side," petitioned a court Monday with allegations that Sean and Leigh Anne Tuohy never adopted him, instead tricking him into a signing a document making them his conservators and enriching themselves.
If you are interested,
@GOPLeader
, I would be happy to discuss with you the personal trauma and devastation I, and those who love me, have endured this past week. You should have to face women like me. Alternatively, you could shut up on something you know nothing about.
a journalist eyewitness being interviewed by NBC right now said that some Parisians in the streets have opened bottles of wine to share while watching the remaining moments of Notre Dame, which is incredibly French in a comforting way.
On Ann Curry: a significant number of more senior women don’t reach back to help younger women, esp. in newsrooms where they can be considered threats. That she did what she did—and likely lost her dream job in part because of it—is incredible. Not all would incur that risk.
It’s wild to me the institutions that have employed
@TaylorLorenz
to do important reporting on influential, dark places on the web that are reshaping our society are fundamentally incurious about the organized online campaigns against her, who coordinates them and why.
I've long believed photojournalists are the most important journalists we have and
@pennstatetom
is truly the best. This photo of Jason Crow comforting a colleague will be in a history book one day.
I gave Capitol Police a bit of benefit of the doubt when they were outmatched as these self-appointed militia members stormed the Capitol on the way in, but they just them walk out of the building when I used to be escorted from the Speaker’s Lobby for wearing a sleeveless dress.
The Newseum is actually the perfect symbol for journalism: no one wanted to pay for entry when everyone in DC is used to getting into museums for free, and when people weren’t paying for substantive content, they started intro’ing kitschy movie exhibitions and now it’s closed.
So I was asked today and provided a theory on why so many former/current Dem Hill staffers back Warren: She is the only candidate who has directly acknowledged the brokenness they live in, rejected the idea of a "return" that's never coming and proposed blowing up the filibuster.
Getting a lot of nice thoughts and prayers tweets from reporters with platforms, but what would be even better is using those platforms to call out dangerous nonsense designed to intimidate women and threaten medical professionals.
I’m sorry it’s just insane that Democrats are like, “we won everything and our opening position on relief is $1.9T” and Republicans are like, “we lost and our opening position is $600B,” and the media will be like, “Democrats say they want unity but reject this bipartisan deal.”
Ken Starr was an incredibly powerful person whose power was so intertwined with his hatred of women that he built multiple careers on ruining young women's lives. You might not think Monica Lewinsky deserved better (she did!) but countless women of Baylor also deserved better.
It's unfair to Ken Starr's legacy to just call him "prosecutor in Clinton Whitewater probe." As Baylor University president, he was absolutely indifferent to hundreds of sexual assaults on his campus.
The racism from Sessions and Miller was normalized then by the press corps because it was the “opposing side” to a bipartisan bill that passed the Senate.
PEOPLE WITH GENERATIONAL WEALTH DO NOT TAKE OUT STUDENT LOANS THAT IS THE MEANS TEST HERE. “DID YOU TAKE OUT LOANS TO PAY FOR YOUR EDUCATION.” I FIXED IT FOR YOU, WASHINGTON.
People are leaning into this “Highland Park is an affluent suburb and not Chicago” narrative and I get it might be reactionary to right-wing media but let none of us perpetuate the idea that any life is less valuable than another. We all deserve to be safe in our communities.
honestly it's extra rage-inducing that this "debate" between a few old men about whether parental leave should be guaranteed and paid in this country is happening simultaneously with Roe no longer being law of the land.
My parents went to the Univ. of Illinois in the 1970s. My dad paid for it on Social Security following his dad's death. My mom paid for it in dimes saved in a booze bottle. Tuition then was $352, $530, $530, $730 all in (for mom). So ~$2,575-$4300 today. Here's what it costs now!
There are a lot of things I would change about political journalism, but the first thing would be to call a moratorium on characterizing legislation as a "win" just because a party got enough votes for it instead of measuring by substantive policy outcomes for actual humans.
I can’t get over the low-key misogyny that infuses both of these updates on Biden’s VP search. Also: Chris Dodd retired from the Senate amid an ethics scandal on mortgage deals he received and has spent 10 years as a lobbyist and now gets to decide that Kamala is uppity?
No one is arguing $125,000 isn’t a lot relative to so many who are not afforded a living wage (another catastrophic policy fail!). The point is our parents had so much more opportunity than we have, things cost less, they made more, and I fear what it’ll look like for our kids.
Q: "What do you say to Americans watching you right now who are scared?"
Trump: "I say that you're a terrible reporter, that's what I say. I think it's a very nasty question and I think it's a very bad signal that you're putting out to the American people.
A 40-year friend of a Capitol Police officer reported the officer for disclosing the secure location he evacuated lawmakers to on Jan. 6.
The friend believed the officer was aligned with the rioters, per USCP discipline reports obtained by McClatchy.
cute commentary from a trust fund baby whose dad went to prison for tax evasion, who then married another trust fund baby and got a White House job he didn’t deserve through nepotism by virtue of that marriage. The Aristocrats!
NEW: Jared Kushner on NBA players' boycott following police shooting of Jacob Blake: "NBA players are very fortunate that they have the financial position where they're able to take a night off from work without having to have the consequences to themselves financially."
@CNBC
I unsubscribed from the Mark Halperin newsletter I did not sign up for and took liberty to provide my own reason as to why I no longer want to receive it.
I feel like an underdiscussed political dynamic currently is just how angry House Democrats are over 1/6. Members legitimately thought they would die, and they’re not here for the bullshit anymore.
this
@sbmaneyphoto
shot from yesterday is so good. It’s so hard to capture the humanity of political/public figures, and, here, KBJ’s daughter is doing the work of the moment.
based on messages I receive, a huge story on Capitol Hill reporters either are ignoring or downplaying is the tremendous fear, exhaustion, anger and burnout among Democratic staff. We could be on the brink of a mass staff exodus, which would be bad for the institution and country
I feel like "conservative lobbyist" in the headline buries the lede that it was MATT SCHLAPP. Abbott Labs paid Matt Schlapp nearly $400K just to have access to Trump's inner circle.
Abbott Labs (
@AbbottNews
) cuts loose lobbyist with close ties to Trump who's become a lightning rod for comments critical of
#BlackLivesMatter
. They paid him nearly $200k in each of 2018 and 2019.
@steph_goldberg
with the scoop
Johnny Weir might be America’s best sports broadcaster. His ability to translate the technicality and artistry of the sport to non-competitive skaters, his ability to read emotion and discuss athletes as humans, speaking Russian fluently when we needed that. Give Johnny an Emmy.
In
@newrepublic
, I ask, if an attempted mass execution at the Capitol—where reporters could have died and Republicans were both accomplices to the crime and rejected for history that their lives mattered—doesn’t end both sides journalism, what will?
There's a domestic terrorist threatening to blow himself up in front of the United States Capitol RIGHT NOW but MSNBC out here interviewing David Petraeus about Afghanistan.
When we were in college, Stephen Miller wrote a column that referred to Durham as a “petting zoo” and Black residents as the animals he shouldn’t be made to touch. Karmic to see him be the one requiring confinement and with whom contact should be avoided.
It took me a while in newsrooms to realize I was making at least $20K less than my male counterparts—which made the pride I sometimes took in getting pay "bumps" with new jobs feel foolish. Eventually, I started telling every woman my salary and what I knew of men's.
#EqualPayDay
Just remembering how none of the big-name journalists (thamel cough cough) who ran with the Manti Te’o story ever faced any repercussions for their massive failures in publishing a complete fabrication.
NEW: Sen. Manchin has told the White House the child tax credit must include a firm work requirement and family income cap in the $60k range, Axios has learned.
These demands would dramatically weaken one of Biden's signature programs.
@TaylorLorenz
"Reporters should have thick skin or get off Twitter!" is a willfully ignorant position that demonstrates from leadership at these outlets an utter failure to grasp the content of the reporting and the forces setting the rules for society today in a highly illiberal way.
📢 This isn’t a setback for Democrats. It’s a setback for the *voters of Wisconsin.* Just because Republicans oppose voting rights does not mean voting rights are big-D Democratic. 📢
Still trying to get over the fact that CNN said Bill Clinton’s character concerns prevent him from speaking at a funeral where Henry Kissinger will deliver remarks.
It’s sort of amazing when you stop and think about it that TWO PEOPLE—Mitch McConnell and Donald Trump—have the power to do something 97% of Americans want TO SAVE LIVES and just won’t.
I’ve decided the reason prominent reporters time and again say that legal decisions regarding the franchise are “wins” for “Democrats” is because to say they’re a win for “democracy” or “voters” (they are!) is to concede Republicans are anti-democracy and anti-voters (they are!).
also, the thing that drives me nuts about “let the voters decide” arguments from members of Congress is that they DID decide ON YOU. To do your job TO REPRESENT THEM in what is supposed to be a co-equal branch of government.
The institutions of our republic are supposed to preserve the rule of law, even against the most powerful public servants. They are not supposed to endlessly refer law enforcement up and out to the voters. The voters have a right to make a decision on their policy preferences.
Dude, if John Thune rolled up to votes in basketball shorts, a t-shirt and flips people would also say something then, too. Like, sorry, when you decide to make style choices your “brand” and then roll up projecting “idgaf” this is the result.
In a
@nytimes
letter to editor, Sens. Susan Collins, Jeanne Shaheen, Lisa Murkowski call coverage of
@kyrstensinema
's fashion choices "sexist"
"We cannot imagine The Times printing similar pieces on the fashion choices of any of our male colleagues."
Colin Powell had cancer. Which is more a reminder that if we all were good neighbors/members of society and got vaccinated, cancer patients wouldn't have to live in as much fear of dying of Covid and could be more free to live their lives.
number of people in the United States vaccinated against the coronavirus: 189,141,481
number of breakthrough COVID-19 deaths, under the age of 65: 1,074
source:
additionally, the story does not mention that the White House/president promoted the Abbott Labs COVID test by name repeatedly, even as it was failing, and now we come to learn it paid six figures to the husband of a top White House aide?
Eye on the Big Lie: "Reuters interviewed 9 of the 15 declared Republican candidates for secretary of state" in five battleground states, and only 2 "said that Biden won the election..."
anyway it's never a good personal approach to step into Taylor Twitter, but that story today was important and people's lives are being ruined by an extremist propaganda machine with a direct pipeline from this account to the highest-profile "media" outlets in the ecosystem.
IOW the people futilely plugging away in DC jobs they once loved, but now feel stuck in, feel *seen* by her. They don't think there's any way to move forward without acknowledging then breaking the "norms" that no longer work. This is a really small group, but it's real/v. online
Biden’s announcement video treats Trump as an outlier of the GOP and not the face of it. To repeat the 2016 fatal flaw of not campaigning against the entire party would be a mistake. Of all candidates, Biden needs to work the hardest to do this based on all his “friendships.”
The Republican Party has moved so far to the right of the *Cheneys* that if political reporters were honest with themselves and with us, words like “fascist,” “authoritarian” or “theocratic” would be used regularly. But they’re not!
if I were a Democrat I'd just order food delivery and have dinner on the House floor and if someone came at me I'd be like remember when a bunch of insurgents pooped here and there were no consequences for my GOP colleagues watch me eat this meatball sub from the Italian Store.
this guy edits Washington coverage for the New York Times. I’m just gonna sit here and fav all the replies for the rest of the day. John Lewis, man born and raised in Alabama who almost died on the Edmund Pettus bridge fighting for civil rights, is not “from the Deep South.”
Can we reframe this? This isn't a "win" for "Democrats." It's a win for voters of Wisconsin, who deserve the franchise. Just because Republicans are fighting to take the vote away doesn't mean that we have to perpetuate the narrative that ballot access should be partisan.
A thing I remember vividly about my time on the Hill was Tom Harkin always turning what he called his “good ear” toward you so he could hear your question and answer it thoughtfully. He was a champion of the ADA and it was reasonable and easy to talk to his “good” side.
How is this any different from Tammy Duckworth or Madison Cawthorn needing a wheelchair? How is it different from many elderly Senators who need hearing aids? CORRECTED
It’s unclear Trump can or has cut off funding to WHO because money already been appropriated for this year. There’s no reason to pull this bs about “recess appointments” because no one is being submitted or held. THEY ARE TRYING TO DISTRACT FROM THOUSANDS OF AMERICANS DYING.
every reporter and analyst on TV today seems to have forgotten that it took Mitch McConnell more than a month to recognize Joe Biden as president-elect.
I don't know who needs to hear this, but on the occasion of my due date, a reminder: not every pregnancy ends in cute pictures on social media and it's OK to talk about it. Openness reduces stigma, which in turn, combats isolation, especially for women and also their families
Guys, I can’t believe it—my first byline in
@ROLLINGSTONE
! And it is a barn burner on how the White House Correspondents Dinner broke the Democratic Party.
If cops are too afraid to enter a building because they will be outgunned by a lunatic in body armor with a AR-15, maybe the union that represents the cops should stop being so base evil and racist that they can't even focus on policy to save cop lives—which is *gun control*.
For whom do DC “norms” work? Consider that this Post reporter who came up through conservative media continues to get promoted and climb the ladder but a woman at the Post who disclosed her status as a sexual assault survivor is cast as “an activist” and lost career opportunities
Look the
@braves
are entitled to be this far on the wrong side of history on voting rights and civil rights, but if they’re gonna do this, then they should keep Hank Aaron’s name out of their mouth this year.
history—most of the NYT politics desk came from Politico. In 2012, their black colleague was fired for saying this on TV about Romney. He couldn’t find a job in media after and worked at a sporting goods store. Mark Halperin called Obama “a dick” on TV in 2011, kept all his jobs*
@nycsouthpaw
@brianbeutler
what if instead of making this story about "inflation," this story were about making permanent an expanded child tax credit and a common-sense expansion of SNAP benefits that were slashed in the Trump Era just because the cruelty was the point?
At John Lewis service, Obama says the Senate should eliminate the filibuster -- a "Jim Crow relic" -- if needed to pass things like DC statehood, voting rights measures.
there’s literally an old Walmart in this country that has been converted into a prison-like holding center for 1500 children seeking asylum, many separated from their parents, and we’re still on a lady comedian using a bad word?
“When you answer name-calling with name-calling and tantrums with tantrums, you’re not resisting him. You’re mirroring him. You’re not diminishing him. You’re demeaning yourselves. Many voters don’t hear your arguments or the facts, which are on your side”
Reminder: "Susan Collins, the moderate" was a storyline largely crafted by DC reporters to justify their belief in a Washington that does not exist, as I wrote earlier this month in
@newrepublic
.
@SenatorCollins
can keep her crocodile tears.
She voted & fought HARD to strip pandemic prep funding. She helped drive the lack of preparation that we had leading up to this.
What’s actually disgraceful is her “I’m a Moderate Lady” dance to cover up brutal policies and votes.
