i wish that the go to response for when a game company (in this case mihoyo) fails to make any characters darker than a paper bag wasn't "be patient". we need to seriously evaluate the ever-present colorism, antiblackness and orientalism in a lot of our favourite fantasy games
one day the art community is going to have to contend with the fact that many artists believe black features are unattractive and devalues anything that isn't
your support for black artists should come from a desire to see improvement in our visibility and to combat the frequent hate and harassment we receive.. not to present yourself as some sort of super ally..
antiblackness in the animation industry (and bigotry in general) needs to be seriously addressed and not just by fans. Considering the roots of animation, it so easy to perpetuate harm and being dismissive of your audience's concerns isn’t the best look
Black artists shouldn't have to risk their platforms to speak on issues that affect them. As much as I enjoy posting art here, anti-Blackness continues to persist in all areas of the art community.
my art pet peeve is when 4c/tightly curled hair is just rendered as a blob of hair with curly spirals sticking out of it with no understanding of shape and texture 😞
dark skin and curly/coily hair still being largely absent from the cute art "aesthetic" saddens me a little, i wish I could see it more often, and not just done sometimes as an alternative
commissioners with dark skin ocs, don't let artists try and convince you that their art style trumps what YOU decided your character's skin colour is.
like what is this..
so.. the other day I got my results saying i've passed the admissions for an university in Japan! yay!
but! there's a lot of fees i need to cover to make it possible so I'm restarting my ko-fi with the goal of "doodling my way to japan"
i wish our responses to racist art didn't involve capitalising off it by making positive/ship renditions... its heartwarming and feel-good but it ultimately does nothing to tackle the rampant racism/orientalism in the art community
This is one of the most blatantly racist things I’ve seen from this whole Rapunzel discourse. They did their research for this one you could spend a whole class studying it.
it's been a week since graduation and I've been so overwhelmed with the fact my identity is no longer "student".. I feel like I'm a good study-er and not a good worker 😅
but reading everyone's well wishes and words is a real mood booster, so thank you!
again reminder: dark skin tones comes in different shades. I'm not tan, I am a deeper brown. drawing a character that canonically has deep brown skin, a lighter, tanner brown is not good enough
"they still look poc" doesn't cut it, not anymore
anti-blackness in fandom goes beyond fandom at this point, cute avis won't hide the fact that some people genuinely don't want black people anywhere near them
it's interesting even when my dark skin and pastels guide is reposted, people still go "that's not pastels!" as if I were to wear a pink skirt in real life my skin colour would become three shades lighter
a lot of you just don't want to put in the work
for most fictional white characters their whiteness is not integral to the character, they're only white because white is the default. it's not racism to want to see your likeness as the default mainstream
It's concerning to me how harassment/rude comments against black artists in the art community is very much being overlooked. It's like general accepted rules on theft, quote tweets and rude replies aren't being respected and it honestly affects my time posting art here..
why are women/girls expected to "grow up" from liking cute things? what does liking hello kitty have to do with not being mature? this incessant need for women to be "grown" and "womanly" is so tiring
💖black cute artists share thread💖
This black history month I want to highlight black artists who have cute artstyles because I feel we're overlooked and underappreciated!
Black artists drop your art and open commission forms down below (if you have any!)

Not to mention the silhouettes are all very similar.. I know it comes with the territory of anime-esque games but you don't have to give all your female characters thigh highs and skin cutouts. Especially when their male counterparts are given more interesting shapes..
question: why are there barely any cartoons with teen/adult black girl leads that are created by black women?
I'm kinda tired of seeing black girl characters on screen with none of the nuance.. like give them bonnets at least
the black women fan experience is relating with characters that don't look like you all throughout your child years until you realise that everyone around you has the most shallow understanding of what black women can be 😊
I never why people only feel represented by characters that look just like them. They must be the most uncreative mfs in the world. I mean I legit feel represented when the character has the same ideology and norms as me. Even if it’s an alien robot.
