Democratic Party candidate for the U.S. House of Representatives in Iowa’s 4th CD in ‘22 and ‘24. He/him. A non-corporate, progressive populist Democrat.
Our ActBlue is live! Please chip in as you are able so we can defend Democracy and fight for the people of Iowa's 4th Congressional District! Just like last time, we are not accepting Corporate PAC money, so we rely on you to fuel this campaign!
Related to this evening’s Iowa political discourse (h/t
@IAStartingLine
) in which folks have asserted to me that the poors just do fraud and that’s why the kids shouldn’t get food in the summer when school is out of session
.
Someone with a knife can not kill as many people as quickly before being stopped as someone with an AR-15. The gun matters. It’s not the only thing that matters, but it does.
Nationally, we’re last in mental health bed availability, last in OB-GYN availability, have the 2nd highest cancer incidence rate, and have one of the worst child care availability rates. Our public ed rankings are plummeting. You’re not spending enough.
Some think a “surplus” is government not spending enough. I say it’s an 𝒐𝒗𝒆𝒓 𝒄𝒐𝒍𝒍𝒆𝒄𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏 from the hard-working men and women of Iowa!
It should be returned to them!
If you’re looking for common threads among mass shooters, being bullied is one of the stronger ones I’ve seen. We live in a society with too many leaders who think bullying conveys strength and kindness is weakness. We need to be proactively anti-bullying.
I see why Gov. Reynolds isn’t spending the surplus on actual needs. She has a lot of cronies, like Odyssey & Rastetter to pay off. To my Republican friends, your party is not fiscally conservative. The only time Reynolds is a penny pincher is when it comes to feeding kids.
Our office has discovered the contract with Odyssey to administer ESAs doubled in cost to taxpayers just a few months after being signed, with no reason being provided. Read it:
There are literally parents now preparing to move out of the state, out of homes they earned through their blood, sweat and tears, because state legislators are targeting their kids. Kids who will be leaving behind friends, family, memories, everything they’ve grown up knowing.
Iowa’s cancer crisis again makes national news, but most of the state’s elected officials don’t talk about it. As such, it’s no surprise that most at my events don’t know we are the only state with a rising cancer incidence rate and have the second highest cancer incidence rate.
Arizona’s school voucher experiment has led to a budget meltdown. The state this year faced a $1.4 billion budget shortfall, much of which was a result of the new voucher spending.
Kim: “Teachers, here’s our big pile of money, but it’s not for you. Child care workers? Nuhuh. Disability care workers? Nope. Mental health advocates? Nah. Unemployed Iowans? No.” This is her bragging about hoarding while people suffer.
I’m still stunned that today, our state government told all landowners that corporate power trumps landowner rights. To my Republican friends, Reynolds and Feenstra sold you out to Rastetter, who bought them for tens of thousands. Not one comment from Feenstra today about it.
Iowans are getting pissed their property taxes are jumping because the Republican Party-controlled state legislature is playing a shell game, cutting income taxes to help the wealthiest while recouping it in ways that impact the less well off.
Moms for Liberty chapters across Iowa endorsed 13 candidates in the 2023 school board races. Out of the 13, a single candidate won in the I35 school district; a rural district with fewer than 1000 students.
Just as Iowa classrooms have transformed over the past 50 years, so have our programs and services. The proposed bill aims to bring significant shifts to the education landscape; it's crucial to keep an eye on how it will impact our programs and services.
It’s fitting I turned in my 2200+ signatures to run for Congress as the only Democratic candidate in the 4th right after sparring with the IA Republican Party Chair over voting rights. I’m the pro-freedom, pro-democracy candidate in this race. Let’s fight the good fight together.
Awful day in the state house. They passed a bill allowing discrimination in the name of religion. The dismantling of a state happening before our eyes and sold for scrap.
The school voucher program is really just a massive redistribution of taxpayer money to the wealthy that kicks public education while it’s already down on the ground bleeding. In other words, it’s a scam. It’s legalized theft.
I see Feenstra has woken up and has done some more panic tweeting this morning. All these reposts demanding Republicans vote for him. Just make the case, what have you done to warrant their vote, Randy?
1. He is serving in literally the least productive US House in modern
If Biden was just convicted of 34 felonies, I wouldn’t be kissing his ass or vilifying the private citizens on the jury. I’d be pissed @ the position he put my party & country in because of his selfishness & recklessness. Then, I’d find someone else to vote for. It’s that simple.
When a corporation not only gets to claim your land that you have spent years working hard to own, but can also put a pipeline underneath you that can asphyxiate you at any moment, & your state government has approved this against your will, you are no longer free. That is Iowa.
“My sister had breast cancer. My other sister had uterine cancer. As a nurse practitioner I’m aware of five people now with pancreatic cancer. I know 20 people who have other cancers or died of cancer here. Everybody is aware this is going on.”
I simply don’t believe that the moment a woman becomes pregnant is the moment she should become dehumanized and lose control over her body and her choices. The exact opposite should be true. She should be empowered and supported, not stripped of her value and agency.
Stop peddling bullshit to Iowans, Todd. This isn’t difficult. Unless you’re a lying, destructive, selfish cog in the scheme to end public education in this state.
A lot of Republicans have told me they are voting for me. Their party’s leadership has sold them out to their big $ corporate donors. They’ve seen I reject such $, have joined Republican landowners at protests in defense of their land, and know it’s time to put people over party.
At least when Grassley posts something off topic, it’s about innocuous things like his vacuum or shows about aliens. Iowa’s Governor, though, is full on internet troll. The great divider.
Great news! Iowa Senate Republicans do not have the votes at this time to proceed with the AEA bill. However, as Rep. Trone Garriott says, the battle isn’t over yet, but clearly the pushback from Iowans is working.
1/After a lot of reflection, discussions with my family, recovery from the last race, and asks of 4th District residents for their feedback on how our last campaign went and if they’d find it helpful and of value for us to run again, I am announcing that I’m running for…
I had a two hour chat today with a room full of Republicans. Good people. We disagreed on some things but certainly agreed on a lot. What are the top ten things we agreed on?
1. The carbon capture pipelines are a scam and an unjustifiable abuse of eminent domain
When she posts this, I’ve got to imagine the families of the 10,000+ Iowans that died from Covid feel erased. Also, California has one of the lowest per capita Covid death rates, Florida has one of the highest.
Iowa and Florida stood as beacons of hope and freedom during COVID. We were the first two states to get our kids back in the classroom!
California locked them out. Destroyed kids’ futures and many will never recover.
How in the hell has Chuck Grassley still managed to avoid real scrutiny over his Jan. 5th comments that strongly suggested he may have known of the inner workings of the Jan. 6th coup plot? Blows my mind.
In Iowa we are still waiting. There is a January 1 deadline to indicate interest in federal funds to feed kids—time is running out and our administration has not yet applied. Please encourage our Governor to direct her administration to apply:
“In February, the Iowa Cancer Registry, in its 50th annual report, found Iowa is the only state with a significant increase in cancer from 2015 to 2019, and has the second-highest overall cancer incidence of all states.”
“As Iowa Safe Schools pointed out in a statement, "there have been zero documented incidents of transgender Iowans behaving inappropriately in restrooms" since Iowa added gender identity to the state civil rights act in 2007.”
Oh by the way, the Iowa Supreme Court’s cherry on top today is traumatizing kids by forcing them to testify against their abusers. Hellish decisions from the state and national supreme courts today. Just awful.
Another 4-3 decision that itself sounds a lot like abuse to me.
Iowa Supreme Court rules children must testify against alleged abusers in-person via
@DMRegister
Also, if Reynolds has nothing to do with the pipeline, why per a FOIA request of her itinerary from the DSM Register did Rastetter have so many meetings with her over the past few years?
1/I'm hearing from some in the press that Walz is too progressive and needs to prove he's a common sense guy. Progressivism is common sense. It's common sense to defend feeding hungry kids more than the 1%er getting his 5th mansion when it comes to tax policy. It's common
Iowa is a corporate piggy bank, where the powerful extract our wealth and send it thousands of miles away. In exchange, we get toxic beaches and shit-filled water, a lot of cancer, and an exodus of our young talent. Why? Our politicians eat from the trough of these robber barons.
HSB 737 will be pushed through the legislature tomorrow, 3/28. This is the bill that will give immunity to the pesticide companies. It is a gift to giant Bayer. Please let people know to call their legislators.
1/In rural Iowa, our wealth is in our land. As consolidation in ag has taken over and continues to ramp up, we've lost most of our farmers who kept that wealth in our communities. Now, we see an increasing wealth gap in rural Iowa, less jobs, and the jobs that are here often
This is a look at what Iowa will be soon if the Iowa Supreme Court approves Reynolds’ abortion ban. The fetus has been given no chance at survival. This isn’t about protecting life. This is about control. This is about making women second class citizens. This is about fear.
BREAKING: Late tonight, the Texas Supreme Court temporarily halted a lower court ruling that would have allowed Kate Cox, our plaintiff with severe pregnancy complications, to have an abortion to protect her health and future fertility.
How’s Iowa doing nationally?
1. Last in OB-GYN availability
2. Last in mental health care bed availability
3. Second worst cancer incidence rate
4. Public Education rankings plummeting as it’s being vilified and underfunded
5. Notorious for its brain drain problems
The Left’s vision for America is Bidenomics, inflation, and an open border.
If you like what we are doing in Iowa, you will love
@RonDeSantis
’ vision for our country!
The Iowa Republican Party leadership went against the will of Iowans of all political affiliations by attacking our most vulnerable students and their parents. Make them pay at the ballot box this year.
We told Iowa legislators that the AEA bill was going to impact students, educators, and schools. The GOP insisted “nothing would change”. We are already seeing impacts and the school year just began. Vote them out.
Judging from my post yesterday asking people who grew up in rural Iowa why they left, some notable things jump out to me reading through the replies:
1. Economic opportunities are lacking.
2. A lot left because of the political environment in rural Iowa leaving them feeling
I talk about this on the campaign trail. The Republican Party hasn’t won the popular vote of a presidential election in 20 years, and demographic/generational shifts aren’t going their way. They can’t win on policy, so they drive people out of red states to make them redder.
This morning, I attended the ribbon cutting for the I-80/I-380 Interchange, which is one of our busiest junctions in the region and a critical link for Iowa’s transportation system.
Congratulations to everyone who worked hard to make this day happen ahead of schedule!
Federal judges allow Iowa book ban to take effect this school year | AP News: We can change this hollowing out of our rights in this state. To my Republican friends, you shouldn’t like these kinds of attacks on freedom either, this government overreach.
I drove through a lot of small Iowa towns this weekend, and one of the unifying threads was the pride folks have in their public schools. Beyond that, the school is often the
#1
employer there. With our steady population decline, those schools are vital to these towns surviving.
Bullshit. Raise the cap on taxable income and social security would be just fine. The cap is well under 200k. The superwealthy don’t have to be our overlords. They are superwealthy in large part because our tax code is so broken that they have the money that was created by us.
Gov. Reynolds sits on her mountain of surplus money so she can tweet about how big it is, while watching schools that surplus should be funding weaken, close, and consolidate over time. As more small town schools close, those same towns will further weaken and further hollow out.
At an emotional school board meeting in Grinnell, Iowa tonight, the board paved the way for nearly $1 million in cuts. The cuts include many teachers and staff. A common refrain: the Legislature and
@KimReynoldsIA
are to blame. Hear from a teacher.

is to willingly make yourself available to public scrutiny. If you’re running for President and you are locking great journalists like Ty out, you don’t have the backbone to be President and you can’t be trusted.
Welp, I got barred from covering a Ron DeSantis event in Harlan — one of three of his events I planned to cover today — with absolutely no explanation as to why.
In Iowa, if you are sexually assaulted, your state government does not give a damn about you. At your lowest, darkest moment, you mean nothing. Why? Because a few people in power want to get their heads patted by their Christian Nationalist donors.
The Iowa Attorney General's Office has paused its practice of paying for emergency contraception, and in rare cases abortions, for victims of sexual assault.
Just finished chatting w/ a packed house in Spencer. Over & over the past couple months, I continue to be amazed at the turnouts. One person tonight said she hasn’t seen this much energy here since Bernie was running for President. Iowa’s 4th District Dems are fired up.
The ESA/Voucher plan is a scam and a robbery of Iowa’s taxpayers. Rep. Konfrst does a nice job here making this clear via her line of questioning. The response of “of course we wouldn’t require that, it’s a private business” is why public money needs to stay in public schools.
A minute from yesterday's Iowa House Education Reform Committee meeting that is with your time if you've been paying attention to the voucher legislation in Iowa.
Or maybe we don’t set those Covid relief dollars on fire for nothing other than a political stunt. Maybe we develop Long Covid research infrastructure in the state? Maybe we upgrade ventilation systems in schools to lessen the spread when the next wave or pandemic comes?
Gov. Kim Reynolds announced she is deploying members of the Iowa National Guard and Iowa State Patrol to US southern border.
She will use federal COVID-relief dollars to cover all expenses.
1/The abortion ban has passed the house and senate, so Kim will be signing it soon. I don't think the right thing for current office holders and candidates to do at this point is to post some iteration of "we all need to vote harder."
Iowa’s brain drain is getting worse, which isn’t a surprise. Feenstra and Reynolds don’t prioritize a fix because the brain drain in the short and mid term helps them solidify political power, but it’s unsustainable and hurts their own voters too.
Iowa Republicans make outlawing gay marriage key 2024 campaign priority: Another sign that the leaders of the party have nothing in the tank that actually helps people, including the voters in their own party.
I really think Deidre DeJear is a once in a generation candidate. I’ve had the pleasure of hearing her in person many times, and I always walk away with the same thought. It’d be a damn shame if we wasted her gift by not doing what’s needed to get her in office.
@DeaceOnline
Stop peddling bullshit to Iowans, Todd. This isn’t difficult. Unless you’re a lying, destructive, selfish cog in the scheme to end public education in this state.
No Iowa legislator can truly be pro-farmer and pro-Iowa without addressing the fact we may not have sufficient topsoil left to be an ag state by 2080. Not only is our DC delegation not talking about this, they are legislating a ramp up of the problem.
“The governor's office told the Iowa Capitol Dispatch the loss of that money is the result of a deliberate decision to avoid committing $3 million in matching state funds toward child care.” Losing 30 mil. to save 3 mil., huh?
I pray you reflect on the damage you do, that the hate in your heart ends, as I imagine you are miserable with that poison you carry within you. I actually live by the golden rule. I want the best for you and Iowa’s kids. Do you, or are they just political pawns to you? Reflect.
If you get the chance to see Feenstra on the road, I’d ask him why he takes thousands from China-owned Smithfield and Syngenta if he is so worried about them taking over our ag sector.
It still blows my mind that Sen. Grassley said out loud on 1/5/21 that VP Pence wouldn’t be present on 1/6/21 to certify the ballots. It also continues to alarm me that Rep. Feenstra voted against the 1/6 Committee. Democracy is who we are, and it’s worth saving.
One of the most damaging things Trump has done has been the attacks on and resultant degradation in confidence of science, expertise, and education. Well meaning people often tell me to not listen to the science, to experts, to facts. Trump had to degrade civil society to win.
This is an 11 min watch but it is so good at telling how rural Iowa became burdened with the problems it’s buried under via the ramp up of corporate consolidation and industrial ag. I’m told it’s too late to reverse even some of this but we won’t know if we don’t try.
NEW: Iowa has lost 90% of its family farms in the past 40 years — 40,000 total farms, gone.
But hog industry profits have tripled.
All that profit just goes to 3 companies that now dominate every aspect of the pork industry.
Iowa is suffering from a cancer crisis but none of our state’s congressional delegation in D.C. talks about its potential root causes or trying to find and mitigate them, a public health emergency that comes up every weekend on the campaign trail. Why do you think that may be?
1/I’ve seen a number of Iowans respond to Tuesday’s election results by saying they are going to move out of state due to the voting trends in the state over the last decade plus, and the resultant concerns they have over policy decisions that…
We see per the results last night that Iowans are pushing back on extremism. How do we know that? Because people ran in races to push back. In Iowa’s 4th cong. district, of the 25 state house races we have, only 9 per my count have a Dem running for ‘24. We need more candidates.
I see a lot of Dollar Generals as I’m driving thru small towns in NW Iowa. To me, they serve as a microcosm representing the hollowing out of our rural communities.
Legacies were cemented at the Des Moines City Council tonight.
Those who voted to criminalize homelessness will be remembered for doing so, regardless of anything else they have done or will do.
Furthermore this issue isn't over, in fact it has only just begun.
1/Iowa will not participate in federal summer meal program for low-income children: Kids are going hungry in Iowa. Reynolds has the money to administer this program. Instead, she’s going to give that surplus to the wealthiest Iowans via more tax cuts.
Redistribution of wealth has been happening from the tax payer to the wealthy for decades.
"This country has socialism for the rich, rugged individualism for the poor."

Republicans want Americans to keep more of their hard-earned money.
President Biden wants to tax and redistribute Americans’ hard-earned money.

“I never fathomed supporting a Democrat, and my politics still have little overlap with him. But I think I would rather have somebody in that seat with integrity who says what they believe and votes in accords with their principles."
I just accepted the debate offer in Fort Dodge on Saturday, Oct 12 at 10 am with Randy Feenstra per the League of Women Voters. Feenstra has not yet accepted.
Today, Iowa’s abortion ban goes into effect. We will begin soon to hear horror stories of women facing death due to pregnancy complications here as the so-called exceptions in the legislation are going to be almost impossible to get. Please spread the message so folks are aware.
I called Rep. Feenstra to congratulate him on his victory. I’m grateful for the many amazingly kind and passionate people I’ve met during the campaign. I’ll have more thoughts later, but thank you, all. Let’s keep fighting the good fight together.
Feenstra has taken thousands from Syngenta & Smithfield, two companies owned by Chinese companies. Through Smithfield, China owns our largest pork producer. Syngenta sells pesticides here banned in a number of European nations. China doesn’t need our farmland to own U.S. ag.
I’m glad that my bill to ban China from buying American farmland passed the U.S. House of Representatives last March by a vote of 407-26.
For the sake of our national security, China can’t be allowed to buy our farmland.

1/I spoke with a Vietnam Vet last night in Humboldt. His wife is in a memory care facility, and he is spending over $8,000/mo on her care. He was injured by agent orange exposure while in the service and gets disability, but those benefits and more are going to his wife’s care.
I wonder how many trans kids have to be bullied, beaten and murdered before transphobic politicians will stop. Or do they think the more the better, hoping the fear drives all trans kids and their parents out? Our trans friends need all the love we can muster right now.
1/This may be an unpopular opinion to some, but the caucus process, while entertaining to some, is in my opinion not accessible, and not conducive to bringing new voters into the fold who may be interested in getting involved but feel intimidated by the process.
A new bill in Iowa would make those who provide "obscene material to minors" register with the sex offense registry.
Obscene material includes "written material" and could include literary classics, as well as LGBTQ+ books, as we have seen interpreted by Republican legislators.
The Iowa Supreme Court today said abortion rights are not protected by our constitution. This may lead to the restriction or ban of abortion, and may also lead to its criminalization. This trajectory will not actually end abortion, but I fear it will criminalize womanhood.
