As a resource teacher I am always looking for new ways to teach my students. I used phone mount grips for cellphones that are collapsible for segmenting sounds. So many possibilities!

It is essential to pronounce the sounds correctly. Here is a great video demonstrating how to pronounce the 44 phonemes in English. Many add a shout vowel u (schwa) to many sounds (tuh, zuh, puh...) I was doing that until I took Top 10 Tools #knowbetter

Blending is such an essential part of my daily lesson. "Blending and segmenting are skills that are necessary for learning to read and spell." I use this blending board, grapheme cards on my table, in a binder, or an online version from @UFLiteracy So many options to practice.

I am using @UFLiteracy for most of my groups. I always incorporate games and different activities. Student were listening to the short vowel sound and picking the grapheme. You don't need buzzers, you can use lights or students just tap the card. Many possibilities!

You can use red stickers for vowels & blue stickers for consonants or different colors for beginning, middle & ending sounds. You can incorporate digraphs and other concepts depending on your scope & sequence. Ss can use this when you do word chains too.

I made this template & it was a success. We finger stretched, used a bingo stamp for each phoneme, then students wrote the grapheme. We were working on lesson 10 from @UFLiteracy Ss loved this activity!

These are word coffins. Memorizing words is not aligned with the research. Having students "memorize any whole words, including high frequency words, by sight without attending to the sound/symbol correspondences" is a red flag. @reading_league

I get my students to highlight the new concept in word lists, on the smartboard or in this case a decodable text. This time we used invisible pens and of course it was a hit. I am always trying something new to keep them engaged. #sor #ScienceOfReading #righttoread

I always ask my Ss to write the alphabet. Many do not know their alphabet! I read there is research into how handwriting fluency effects reading fluency. I found this assessment asking Ss to write the alphabet as many times in 1 minute. I find it tells you a lot. Thoughts?

We can screen Ss early on to see If they are struggling, and if they are, we can provide them with evidence-based tier 1 instruction and intervention. Early identification and intervention are crucial for students who are struggling early on and or may be at risk for dyslexia.
